Eberspacher, one of the leading developers of exhaust, heating and air conditioning systems, is extending its partnership with CHEP Automotive and Industrial Solutions, at up to five additional production plants across Europe.

Eberspacher’s Wilsdruff plant in Germany, who manufactures Euro 6 standard exhaust systems, has been working with CHEP since it began operations in 2013, enabling Eberspacher to simplify its supply chain operations and focus on the core business.

With the global supply chain becoming increasingly complex, Eberspacher looked for a more cost-effective and sustainable packaging solution than operating their own pool, and selected CHEP, to work with them to reduce their packaging costs in the transportation, handling and loss areas, delivering costs savings of nearly 25%, whilst reducing the environmental impact.

CHEP Automotive Solutions provides Eberspacher with a wide range of reusable equipment covering small containers (KLT) in a variety of sizes, pallet load carriers and dust covers, whilst managing and maintaining the equipment across the entire supply chain, simplifying their logistics processes and ensuring that deliveries to their customers are on-time and in sequence.

“Buying our own containers, then continuously managing and balancing the inventory over these long distances would involve a great deal of effort and be extremely costly,”
says Oliver Hermes, Director Global Logistics for Eberspacher. “We therefore chose not to use our own container pool at the Wilsdruff plant, opting instead to outsource this to CHEP.”

David Mayo, Vice President Automotive and Industrial Solutions Europe at CHEP, explains, “Together with Eberspacher, we calculated an individual business case for the new plant in Wilsdruff and we were able to demonstrate that our pooling model presented a good alternative to an in-house solution – both in terms of costs and in respect of efficiency and sustainability. We are delighted that we are able to apply our many years of experience as well as our expertise to ensure a smooth flow of goods at Eberspacher.”

Due to this success at Wilsdruff, Eberspacher has extended this partnership to plants in Neunkirchen (Germany) and Nykoping (Sweden), with plans to roll out the solution to Emden (Germany), Castellalto (Italy) and St. Michel (France).

“With the aid of CHEP, we can ensure outstanding logistics processes – in terms of economy, quality and environmental compatibility – and thus rise above the competition,” explains Hermes. “The long-term aim is to establish a standardised solution for maximum efficiency in place of a variety of different systems.”
