Packaging Machinery Process Advantage

Drive solutions from Nord Drivesystems increase the efficiency in system operation at several points in the packaging process chain. With two concepts, the company mainly focuses on the fields of end-of-line packaging and primary packaging, where its decentralised drive technology and wash-down-capable aluminium housings achieve significant cost benefits.

Packaging processes require a high level of dynamism, flexibility and cost efficiency. End-of-line packaging and primary packaging offer great potential here that is increased by drive solutions from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS.

Decentralised drive technology

With a solution combining decentralised drive electronics and asynchronous motors, NORD provides the end-of-line packaging with an in many ways efficient alternative to centrally controlled concepts. The mounted frequency inverters free the drive system of complex wiring. This significantly reduces installation and maintenance efforts. Furthermore, the systems become easier to scale to that they can be quickly and easily adapted to new requirements. Thanks to their high overload capacity and control without encoder, drive solutions from NORD achieve the dynamics required by applications in final packaging. The integrated POSICON module allows for precise positioning. All in all, this results in significant cost benefits over the commonly used centrally controlled servos solutions.

Drives with treated aluminium housing

For primary packaging, NORD’s NXD tupH® surface protection reveals the process advantages of components with aluminium housings. With NXD tupH®, aluminium surfaces are electrolytically treated and coated with a powerful sealer. This makes them particularly resistant to extreme environmental conditions such as contact with aggressive cleaning chemicals in wash-down areas. Thanks to the sealer, no particles will flake off even if damage occurs to the surface. NXD tupH®-treated surfaces are free from PFAS, and food-safe according to the provisions of the FDA and the EU Regulation 1935/2004 as well as the respective regulations in Switzerland and the MERCOSUR states. The strengths of aluminium are thus also coming into effect in primary packaging. Aluminium is lightweight, economical and fully recyclable. Furthermore, aluminium housings provide high heat conductivity, thus reducing the maximum surface temperature.

LogiDrive variants– Advanced and Basic

LogiDrive Advanced consists of the high-efficiency IE5+ synchronous motor, the NORDAC ON+ and a gear unit from NORD, and was optimised in terms of energy efficiency. The high efficiency over a large speed and load range enables variant reduction for more streamlined processes and reduced administration and warehousing costs, which is particularly of advantage for large systems with numerous drives and which furthermore reduces downtimes.

LogiDrive Basic consists of an IE3 asynchronous motor, the NORDAC ON and a gear unit from NORD. The components are optimally matched and impress with a large adjustment range. This solution mainly focuses on the acquisition costs.

Decentralised drive electronics

The decentralised NORDAC ON/ON+ frequency inverters are characterised by their compact design, full plug-in capability and high reliability. They also offer PLC functionality for drive-related functions (PLC onboard) and an integrated multi-protocol Ethernet interface. PROFINET, EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP can be set via parameters. The inverters are designed for power ranges from 0.37 kW to 3.7 kW. With their plugand-play function, they provide a maintenance-friendly and economical solution for modern production environments. The NORDAC ON is also intended for integration into PROFIsafe and FSoE environments.

The IE5+ synchronous motors with efficiencies of up to 95 % over a wide torque range also provide optimum efficiency in partial load and partial speed ranges. They surpass the highest defined efficiency class and are characterised by their compact, hygienic design in a very small installation space. Available versions are TENV smooth motor, TEFC motor with cooling fins and integrated DuoDrive geared motor with a power range from 0.35 kW to 4 kW. In the second quarter of 2025, NORD will expand its product portfolio with an additional size.

NORD not only supports its customer with energy-efficient and tailor-made drive systems to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) but also with services such as the NORD ECO service to analyse existing systems and reveal potential for saving energy.

Keeping an eye on the drive

In addition, NORD released the third version of its Windows parameterisation software. The software tool is the ideal supplementation to the NORDCON MOBILE-APP for smartphones or tablets.
It offers additional functions for setting up and monitoring drives. A customisable dashboard, a contextsensitive help function and a revised oscilloscope support application-specific control of the drive technology.

Support for Energy-efficient Drive Systems

With its ECO service, NORD helps companies to find the most energy-efficient drive solution for their application. Not only energy consumption and CO₂ emissions but also the costs for administration, maintenance and wear can be reduced by using suitable drive systems. The NORD ECO box can measure the energy consumption of individual drives in detail and allows for extensive data analysis.

“The first step is the comprehensive collection of measurement values,” Jörg Niermann, Head of Marketing at NORD, explains. “The NORD ECO box contains an energy measuring device that measures the drive’s current and voltage. It determines the effective or reactive power, i.e. the energy actually used or not used, and from this calculates the relative power factor.”

After installation of the NORD ECO box between the drive and power supply, data covering permanent loads, load peaks and irregular conditions is recorded over a period of two months. Measuring over the entire period creates a high density of data that can identify patterns and random outliers, allowing a load cycle of the entire system to be created.

Evaluation of the data

Once the survey is completed, NORD evaluates the data. The customer receives the evaluation in the form of a PDF document which presents the main key data. In the evaluation of the results, the large amount of data recorded makes it possible to determine precisely whether the dimensions of a system meet the requirements of the respective application or whether the system is oversized, for example, which is particularly important when optimising for energy efficiency.

Reduction of variants

In large systems with numerous drives – such as in intralogistics – the NORD ECO service can help not only to optimise the power used by the individual drive systems, but also to reduce the number of different systems. This helps to further streamline production, logistics, storage and service processes. The high-efficiency motors from NORD provide a constant torque over a large speed range and are particularly suitable for a reduction of variants.

Together with the data evaluation, the customer receives a recommendation for an efficient NORD drive solution. The energy balance of the NORD solution is documented as part of a further measurement and the customer can see their increase in efficiency in writing.

“The NORD ECO service has already helped various customers to improve the energy efficiency of their production and thus to reduce their carbon footprint,” says Niermann.

Nord Drivesystems Optimistic About Growth

In a challenging year, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS also looks back on positive developments. Just before the turn of the years 2022/2023, the drive manufacturer passed the one billion euro sales threshold for the first time, increased its number of employees to 4,900 and opened new production locations worldwide.

“2022 was a very successful year, but at the same time characterised by crises”, says Gernot Zarp, Sales Manager at NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. “The customers’ feedback, however, was very positive as despite the bottlenecks in the supply chains we always tried to make everything possible for our customers.”

Focus topics and products

In 2022, the focus was mainly on innovative, energy-saving drive solutions to significantly reduce the energy consumption in industrial applications and to appropriately respond to the increasing energy costs – for example by using the patented DuoDrive and the high-efficiency IE5+ motors. The NORD ECO service supported companies in finding the most efficient drive solutions.

In addition, the NORD Group focussed on the topic sustainability: Internal processes have been made more efficient but also further aspects have been shifted into focus, such as environmental protection, the training and promotion of employees, human rights in the supply chain, certificates (EcoVadis and ISO 14001) and the signing of the UN Global Compact.

Investments and growth

In 2022, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS invested heavily in the extension of the capacities in Germany and abroad. The new office and administration building in Bargteheide was built, the production location in Yizheng, China, was completed and in the first quarter of 2023, the company’s fourth global assembly plant for industrial gear units will be opened in India to map the local growth. Furthermore, the manufacturer plans to extend the electronic production at its Aurich location, and to significantly increase the capacities of the motor factory in Poland.

Prospects for 2023

“The last years have shown that companies must position themselves more broadly. This is why the topic of Multisourcing will get a higher priority, especially in the fields of supply chain and production, but also in the global orientation of the target industries”, Zarp explains. In 2023, the focus will be on industries such as post & parcel, airport, warehouse logistics, bakery and packaging industry, and applications on bulk handling or mixing and agitating.

“Currently, energy-efficient solutions such as our patented DuoDrive and IE5+ motors are very popular as they provide a particular customer benefit. The same applies to our MAXXDRIVE® XD industrial gear units or the NORDAC ON frequency inverters, the power ranges of which we will expand to 3 kW”, says Zarp. Topics such as factory automation and digitalisation will also play an important role this year, particularly with regard to the growing Asian market.

“All in all, we look optimistically to the new year and assume a further improvement of the supply situation and further growth”, says Zarp. In the field of electromechanical motors and geared motors, the manufacturer is already back on pre-crisis level with its standard delivery times achieved and a reliability of more than 90%. “We all yearn for normality and stability instead of crises.”
