Courier Service Launched for Hard-to-Recycle Items

UK Recycling company First Mile has launched a RecycleBox courier service. The box can be filled with hard-to-recycle items or items that are not traditionally recycled through household or commercial waste services.

New materials added to the RecycleBox (www.recyclebox.co.uk) service this month, include:
•Makeup and beauty packaging – from foundation tubes to mascara wands and moisturiser tubs.
•Snack packaging – including crisp packets, sweet and chocolate bar wrappers and popcorn packets.
•Food and drink pouches – from baby food and juices to pet food and toothpaste packaging.
•Flexible plastics – including plastic carrier/grocery bags, cling film, plastic seals and bubble wrap.
•Water filters – all components and all brands, including bottle filters and packaging.

Once RecycleBoxes are received back to First Mile’s dedicated sorting facility, the Sacktory, items are sorted by their material type and sent for reuse or recycling. Many of the newly-introduced recycling streams will be sorted based on the grade of their plastics content and then granulated to be used in new plastic products.

With its environmental expertise and large network of partnerships, First Mile often identifies solutions for hard-to-recycle items. Where this isn’t possible, First Mile will offer advice to the brand concerned, focusing on a credible circular economy solution where a product’s material will have a useful second life.

Founder and CEO of First Mile, Bruce Bratley, comments: “We have big ambitions for our innovative RecycleBox service in 2020, especially around those everyday items that people find hard to recycle through traditional recycling services.”

Supply Chain Firms Planning Circular Economy Investment, Says Survey

Seventy percent of supply chain leaders are planning to invest in the circular economy in the next 18 months, according to a recent survey by global research firm, Gartner. However, only 12% of those have linked their digital and circular economy strategies so far.

Gartner defines the circular economy as an economic model that separates the ability to achieve economic growth from the consumption of natural resources. Those business models encourage continuous reuse of materials to minimize waste and the demand for additional natural resource consumption. The circular economy starts with good design, with end of life and raw material reuse in mind.

“The circular economy creates an ecosystem of materials,” said Sarah Watt, senior director analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice. “What was previously viewed as waste now has value. However, those ecosystems are complex and include many interdependencies and feedback loops. Digital technology has the potential to provide visibility and enable improved decision making when it comes to raw materials and services. Already, 35% of companies believe that digital technology will be a key enabler for their circular economy strategies, but very few are leveraging the technology for this purpose yet.”

Gartner’s Future of Supply Chain Survey gathered data from 1,374 respondents responsible for supply chain and related functions across a broad range of industries including high-tech, healthcare, retail and logistics.

New Hyster General Purpose Forklift Extends Choice

Hyster has launched its general-purpose H2.0-3.5UT lift truck series.

Available with diesel, LPG or dual fuel engines, provides strength, reliability and a low cost of ownership, according to the company. “With an uncomplicated design, the 2-3.5-tonne capacity lift trucks are well suited to the needs of many general-purpose handling operations, particularly lower intensity operations,” it said.

A range of standard features aim to help drivers get on with the job, whether stacking in the warehouse or loading lorries in the yard. Various forks and carriages, including integrated side shift options, as well as a range of masts, including tilt options, are available to suit real-world operating needs with maximum fork heights up to 5500mm.

Like the existing FT and XT Hyster lift truck series’, the UT trucks are designed to help reduce damage, and downtime. Auxiliary hoses are centred on the free lift cylinder to eliminate hose twisting and there is positive hose retention with large radius bends to prevent hose scuffing. Tilt cylinders are sealed to minimise contamination and the radiator provides excellent cooling to help keep the truck up and running.

“Maintenance for the UT lift trucks is straight-forward, reducing service time and costs,” says Rob O’Donoghue, Director Solutions – Europe, Middle East and Africa, for Hyster Europe. “With easy service access and no special tools, laptops or PC required, this is an ideal option for operations looking to self-service. Cost-effective replacement parts are readily available, and the truck is covered by our standard Hyster warranty.”
