Fishing retailer transforms fulfilment with WMS

UK-based sports and hobbies retailer Fishing Tackle & Bait has successfully transformed its international fulfilment capabilities with Descartes’ cloud-based ecommerce warehouse management solution (WMS). With Descartes, the multi-channel merchant scaled order processing capacity by 250% without adding labour. In addition, it was able to virtually eliminate miss-picked items and overselling of inventory, and reduced customer service queries by more than 70%.

“Our business was originally a classic brick-and-mortar retail store, but we soon realised we had to broaden our distribution strategy and participate in marketplaces like Amazon and eBay to ensure future growth not only in the UK but also in Ireland, Europe and North America,” said David Burleigh, Director of Fishing Tackle & Bait.

“With COVID, we suddenly experienced an incredible spike in sales of over 250%. With only manual processes in place, we soon faced inaccurate stock levels and disappointed customers who were waiting for their deliveries. We were considering hiring additional staff when our ecommerce platform provider, IRP Commerce, recommended the Descartes ecommerce WMS to us. Now we’re extremely proud of our current logistics operations and our ability to better control over our customers’ delivery experiences.”

Part of Descartes’ ecommerce solution suite, the Descartes ecommerce WMS solution helps direct-to-consumer brands and ecommerce retailers rapidly scale in combination with providing an improved customer experience. The solution helps ensure that retailers can ship on time, ship the right items, reduce risks of overselling existing inventory, and have greater transparency into warehouse operations.

The Descartes ecommerce WMS solution has integrations into major ecommerce platforms to accelerate implementation and time to value. Order information is automatically available to be executed via mobile driven multi-order pick-and-pack strategies and then fed into parcel shipment systems.

“We’re pleased that Fishing Tackle & Bait is able to deliver a highly satisfying online buying and delivery experience to their customers,” said Dirk Haschke, VP & General Manager, Ecommerce at Descartes. “Our scalable ecommerce WMS offers efficient and intelligent processes that eliminate key warehouse management problem areas for online retailers. Fishing Tackle & Bait’s ecommerce success demonstrates the importance of automated order fulfilment for growing multi-channel merchants that want to stay ahead of their competition and retain satisfied customers.”

Nano tape “has strength to replace nails”

Sometimes called ‘magic tape’, a transparent and lightweight double-sided nano tape from Kite Packaging can hold objects up to 1kg in weight. Its outstanding adhesive strength makes it an incredibly versatile product for an assortment of decorating, DIY or domestic applications in addition to the professional purposes it can satisfy within an office or a warehouse.

To use, simply cut off the required amount, seal it onto almost any surface and attach the item you want to suspend. The tape can even be reused by peeling it off the surface, washing with water and leaving it to dry naturally to regain its stickiness. Hence, Kite says its nano tape is a sustainable, multi-purpose solution built to last.

Within a packing station, tapes, scissors or label dispensers can be secured at the most convenient position for the user. The advantage of non-permanent fittings is the flexibility it grants the space. For small businesses, a pack bench may double as a product image backdrop and the tape can facilitate this transformation via the easy removal of suspended objects or the quick tidying up of the flat surface.

Office applications include organising workspaces to be as ergonomic and easily customisable as possible through attaching pens, pencils, calendars and posters to walls or desk divisions. Furthermore, you can elevate desks without causing slipping by inserting tape underneath a table leg, for example.

The nano tape is also popular for household tasks such as hanging picture frames or mirrors without inflicting potential damage to the wall. The clear and washable appearance will not interfere with any existing colour schemes while providing optimal decorative freedom for the user. The tape offers excellent versatility and convenience with the potential to revolutionise many processes.

Samskip adds air freight to portfolio

Samskip is bringing together expertise from its Bremen-based project cargo business and its dedicated air freight team at Schiphol airport in the Netherlands to leverage its full potential as a “hidden gem” in special load logistics.

The joint initiative creates a focus for capabilities which extend from express air freight delivery, through breakbulk, heavy lift and out-of-gauge special cargoes movements by sea. The one-stop-shop service includes coordinated plane and ship chartering by Samskip.

“We are extending our ability to overcome exceptional transport challenges by bringing together proven expertise in air and ocean logistics,” says Jens Siedentopf, Head of Breakbulk Projects, Samskip.

Mostly associated with multimodal transport, Samskip has identified project cargoes as a strong opportunity for growth, based on its global logistics presence and the potential to coordinate with its shortsea, rail, trucking and inland barge service network. The opportunity to add airfreight to the project cargo mix follows the launch of Samskip Air in May 2021.

Seafood volumes moving by air grew strongly in the second part of 2021, especially through sea-air links into global markets via Schiphol. However, coordinating sea and air services allows Samskip Air Freight Manager Hans Blauw to convert other opportunities. A recent requirement to help a customer facing production backlogs to transfer a 19-tonne load that would normally have been shipped by sea to air service provided “one example of how this can work”, says Blauw.

However, Blauw is more focused on growing volumes based on logistics expertise rather than opportunism. The former KLM, FedEx and TNT executive says a job for an oil major which involved sending some cargoes by sea and chartering a plane to carry urgently needed equipment by air “to get rigs operational after a storm” showed what can be done. Another, for a mining company, saw equipment shipped by sea and plane on a door-door basis, with trucking managed by Samskip at both ends.

“We offered full project cargo logistics services that deal with the customer’s need to get their asset working and earning again, backed up by out-of-gauge loads moving by sea,” says Blauw Other areas where Samskip’s airfreight skillsets have been making an impact include logistics management for China’s mobile phone industry, he adds.

The attractions of Samskip as air freight service provider for overweight/oversized cargoes could be a “no brainer” for its existing project cargo customers, according to Siedentopf. “Based on extensive knowledge, we offer services ranging from logistics management to individual transport planning from origin to destination. We’ve also made a speciality of combining tailor-made transport services to secure attractive freight rates. We have the experience, the engineering and the risk assessment, the chartering solutions and the equipment to support our ambitions.”

With 47 offices in 35 countries, Samskip also has the network, the local staff, the customs knowhow and the digital booking systems “to support pain-free, A-Z project cargo logistics for large and small customers alike, whatever the challenge or routing,” says Siedentopf.

Samskip’s multimodal-focused employees are increasingly getting the message on the potential to introduce customers to project cargo services which uphold the same high standards on safety and sustainability, he adds. Currently, Siedentopf is raising awareness internally of Samskip’s longstanding sole in multi-purpose vessel chartering, which often flies under the radar.

“We have the special skills in handling loads of different sizes, the financial strength, the chartering expertise and contacts, and the experience to deliver reliability and load combinations which achieve competitive rates,” he says. “Samskip is the hidden gem of project cargo management, and coordination with our airfreight division puts us one step closer to its discovery by the mainstream market.”

Automation helps Phoenix fulfil pick-to-prescription logistics

Warehouse automation is enabling Phoenix Healthcare Distribution to fulfil patients’ repeat prescription orders efficiently and securely from its facility in Runcorn, Cheshire. The company is using the Pack2Patient automated logistics solution developed and delivered by KNAPP, which enables single items to be processed rapidly, cost-effectively and with end-to-end traceability.

KNAPP has supplied automated logistics systems for over 80 Phoenix locations worldwide. The solution featuring five Pack2Patient lines, which was supplied to the Runcorn distribution centre in 2019, has been so successful that Phoenix recently installed an additional line at the site.

The Runcorn facility is one of the UK’s largest automated pharmacies and provides Phoenix with a ‘hub and spoke’ solution for the assembly of repeat prescriptions, with an average of 1.7 million items a month being processed for pharmacies in England, Scotland and Wales.

“We were delighted to partner with KNAPP to develop our bespoke offsite order assembly facility,” says Paul Wilkinson, Head of Supply Chain Development and Centralised Dispensing at Phoenix. “The medicines supply chain relies on automation and IT solutions to ensure patients get the medicines they need, when they need them and at the lowest cost. Centralised automated order fulfilment is vastly more efficient than pharmacy-level assembly, and through centralising repeat prescription assembly we are able to free up time for pharmacy colleagues to provide the support, advice and healthcare services that patients need from their local community pharmacies.”

The Pack2Patient solution is designed to meet all regulatory requirements, including the Falsified Medicines Directive. “Our KiSoft Vision image-recognition technology enables items to be scanned with comprehensive data capture for lot and serial number tracking,” says Phil Houghton, Business Development Director for KNAPP UK. “This forms part of our philosophy of the zero-defect warehouse to ensure quality, security and efficiency along the entire supply chain.”

At the Runcorn DC, products picked fully automatically by KNAPP’s Central Belt System (A-frame automatic picking machine) are conveyed to a workstation where an operator removes them from the tote, placing them on a conveyor belt. This feeds the items automatically into the Pack2Patient system, where smart cameras scan each item to capture information from 1D and 2D matrix codes, shape/dimensions and several other attributes. The Pack2Patient solution automatically prints and applies labels to the articles on the fly as they pass through the system.

Next is the article verification step – where the system checks that the label, information and article are correct – with any items not verified being diverted to a manual quality-checking station. The medicines are then automatically sorted into patient orders by the system via diversion into one of a series of conveyor lanes.

After an order quality check – to ensure that the correct articles are assigned to the order – the articles for a particular patient are automatically bagged and labelled for dispatch.

KNAPP also supplied ‘pick-to-light’ walls in a semi-automated Sort & Pack area, where orders for items not suitable for handling by the Pack2Patient automation are consolidated. These goods are scanned on one side of the wall and placed in the illuminated location before being picked by the worker on the other side of the wall, as indicated by light displays.

In addition to applications in the healthcare sector, KNAPP’s Pack2Patient technology is also suitable for use with veterinary products.
