Warehouse Drone Employed for Efficiency

Kite, an employee share-owned company, is paving the way for logistics as one of the first UK businesses to incorporate warehouse drone technology into its materials handling operation.

Next generation technology, inventAIRy XL, provides automated inventory control in rack and pallet warehouses whilst offering unrivalled efficiency. It has allowed Kite Packaging to significantly improve their processes by undertaking the responsibility of stock checking, enabling the company’s workforce to focus on order fulfilment to meet the rising demand for ecommerce whilst maintaining outstanding customer service.

Using sensors for barcode scanning, a ground robot for autonomous navigation, and smart software to make the data obtained usable, the drone conducts cycle counts considerably faster than any manual operation, no matter how effective it may be. The revolutionary pairing of this technology with a supporting ground vehicle conquers three key constraints of drone use in warehouses: battery endurance, flight stability and autonomous navigation with GP.

Warehouse Drone accuracy

By overcoming these issues, inventAIRy XL removes the need for labour to carry out inventory counts, thus eliminating possibilities for human error and increasing the accuracy of Kite’s operation. The need for mobile elevating work platforms is also made redundant, significantly reducing health and safety risks for staff.

Ultimately, the drone has streamlined Kite’s warehouse operation for far greater efficiency, empowering the leading online packaging supplier to continue improving their existing first-class customer service.

Large Tyre Warehouse Opens in Poland

Bridgestone, a global leader in tyres and sustainable mobility solutions, present in Poznań since 1998, and ESA logistika have opened a 50,000 sq.m tyre warehouse where tyres will be shipped for further distribution.

What particularly distinguishes the complete warehousing processes that are implemented for Bridgestone is several sustainable solutions that allow obtaining BREEAM Excellent certification. One of them is a 50kWp photovoltaic installation and modern technologies in energy and water saving and reducing CO2 emissions. In the interests of the well-being of employees, green relaxation zones are also created around the hall.

Bridgestone is committed to achieving its major environmental goals; carbon neutrality and the use of 100% sustainable materials by 2050. – Our new project launched with ESA logistika reflects our commitment to create a supply – chain and logistics with long-term environmental benefits and aligns perfectly with the “Ecology” and “Energy” values in the Bridgestone E8 Commitment – says Elżbieta Oussar, Logistics and Supply Chain Director, Bridgestone Europe East Region. For 24 years Bridgestone systematically increased its footprint in the Wielkopolska region, where our largest factory in Europe is located. Along with increasing demand for our premium tyres and the extension of capacity in the Bridgestone Poznan plant, now comes the new warehouse that fulfills our requirements on the way for an optimized and sustainable supply chain.

The hall is also equipped with innovative systems and tools that automates and facilitates work. These includes a warehouse management system created by ESA logistika experts, belt conveyors for unloading and loading individual tyres and stacking them on racks, and at a later stage also robots for transporting tyres and racks for their storage. – Innovation is something that we use at ESA logistika every day. This time we are very lucky that the Bridgestone company is open to all new products and will allow us to act extensively in this area. We plan to automate even such a prosaic matter as keeping the floor clean – says Rafał Łuczak IT and Implementation Manager at ESA logistika.

Despite such a high level of automation, the launch of the warehouse near Poznań will create more jobs. In the beginning, nearly 50 people found employment there. These are mainly warehouse employees, but also logistics specialists and shift managers. – Entrusting such a large operation to ESA logistika is proof of the great trust that the client places in us. We are glad that our activities so far show that we are ready to implement new, increasingly larger projects – says Łukasz Dziewanowski Managing Director at ESA logistika.

According to Katarzyna Kujawiak, Development Director at Panattoni: Last year alone, we delivered about 200,000 sqm for the automotive industry. The valuable experience we’ve gained in recent years continues to pay off. One of the results is the state-of-the-art logistics center, where our client ESA logistika conducts operations for the global tire leader. Our competence in sustainable construction also proved important in the realization of the facility. To date, we have completed environmental certification in Poland for facilities totaling more than 6 million square meters.

The warehouse is equipped with modern security systems, especially fire protection. Developer divided the investment into two zones separated by the REI 240 wall. Thanks to the special structure of the external dockside zone, the safety of employees can be protected. Attention to detail is the hallmark of this project. The common goals shared by all involved from the outset allow us to confidently count on the full success of this cooperation.

Mushiny Robotics Gains European Presence

Mushiny, a leading supplier of complete solutions for the use of autonomous mobile robots, is consistently continuing its successful entry into the European market by establishing its own branch offices. Mushiny Robotics Europe GmbH, headquartered in the Lower Saxon municipality of Stuhr near Bremen, is making a start.

“With the important logistics location of Bremen in the neighbourhood and excellent transport links to the ports along the North Sea coast, we now have the ideal base to provide users of our products with optimum support in every respect,” explains Thomas Li, Co-Founder of Mushiny Robotics Europe GmbH. “From here, we can develop highly efficient AMR solutions in close customer contact, and in the future, interested parties will also be able to see for themselves the performance of Mushiny products in a showroom,” Li continues.

Mushiny specializes in creating highly efficient solutions for warehouse logistics, focusing on the use of autonomous mobile robots (AMR). Following the goods-to-person principle, Mushiny links warehouse management and ERP systems to AMR fleet management via AI software. Instead of just following predefined routes within a warehouse or production hall, Mushiny robots, as self-learning AMR systems, can independently optimize routing and thus logistics processes on an ongoing basis. The size of the robot fleet is easily scalable and can comprise more than 1,000 AMR units in individual cases. To control the complex operations, Mushiny develops individually configured Robot Management Systems (RMS), which can also be seamlessly integrated into existing logistics environments. Meanwhile, the recently introduced and industry-leading “Mushiny Xihe iRMS” solution is a new generation RMS whose use increases the operational efficiency of a warehouse logistics system by three to five times.

AMR Supplier

Founded in 2016, Mushiny has quickly become the world’s leading provider of AI-driven AMR systems for a wide range of applications in goods and cargo logistics. The company is headquartered in the Suzhou Industrial Park north of Shanghai in the Chinese province of Jiangsu.

In addition to establishing its own subsidiary in Germany, Mushiny 2023 will also participate with its own presentations at the Hannover Messe (April 17-21) and LogiMAT in Stuttgart (April 25-27).

Hoppecke Cuts Freight Delivery Firm Costs

A leading palletised freight delivery company is enjoying important operational benefits and reduced costs after replacing its diesel materials handling fleet with electric forklifts.

Working in partnership with battery specialist Hoppecke, Freightroute is also reducing its impact on the environment, while a quieter MHE solution is fostering a more harmonious relationship with neighbouring residents and businesses.

Since a lot of Freightroute’s operations take place at night, the switch to an electric fleet has created a much quieter and cleaner working environment. Having started the changeover in 2019, by swapping some of its diesel engine machines for battery-powered counterbalance trucks, Freightroute teamed up with Hoppecke to complete the move and maximise the benefits.

Freightroute is committed to providing its customers with a first-class end-to-end solution. The decision to switch to electric forklifts was therefore made on the understanding that the benefits to the business would not impact adversely on the quality of service provided to customers.

Hoppecke analysed the set-up, then fitted a batcoms datalogger to the existing truck batteries. Using the results to gain a better understanding of Freightroute’s daily operational requirements, Hoppecke was able to increase battery capacity by 30 per cent.

Subsequently, Freightroute adopted Hoppecke’s Trak-Air 5.5-hour charging systems, which are able to dovetail with the palletised freight operation, facilitating opportunity charging during rest periods and a full charge during the morning to lunchtime period.

Gus Whyte, Hoppecke‘s Sales Director UK and Ireland, says: “Freightroute was well-aware of the advantages of switching to battery-powered trucks. Our input helped to maximise its investment in the future of the business to deliver improved efficiency and extended battery life whilst also keeping employees safe.

“We’re delighted to help Freightroute achieve significant operational improvements with a set-up that is more efficient. Operational costs have significantly reduced due to savings from lower fuel and forklift maintenance costs.”

Hoppecke provides full maintenance support to Freightroute. The customised service contract includes battery topping and cleaning as well as charger preventative maintenance. Meanwhile, the collection of charger data supports an ongoing operational analysis with a view to driving further efficiencies.

Hoppecke Industrial Batteries is the leading specialist for industrial battery systems and at the same time the largest battery manufacturer in European ownership. Hoppecke offers to its customers around the world concepts for efficient and reliable power supply for every industrial application. A leading exponent of environmental care for more than 90 years, Hoppecke offers solutions for a variety of industries including motive power, reserve power for IT/telecoms, power stations, solar energy and UPS, special power for rail and underground. Hoppecke’s UK operation is based in Newcastle-Under-Lyme in the Midlands and the parent company has customers and business partners in many countries around the world, including Europe, the USA and China.

New Jungheinrich MD Eyes Opportunities

Paul Lynam has been named the new Managing Director of Jungheinrich UK, an industry-leading intralogistics supplier. It is a role he will combine with his current position as MD of Jungheinrich Ireland, a position he has held for the last two years. Lynam is on a mission to help businesses dependent on material handling/intralogistics respond to a fast-changing world. The appointment occurs at a critical moment within the intralogistics industry, and he is excited to have the reins of both companies at such a pivotal time.

“The sector is on the cusp of major change,” he explained. “We are at the start of a period where the impact of global megatrends such as electrification, digitisation, sustainability and globalisation will mean a lot of change and opportunity for our customers, and we will have to adapt to meet that demand.”

Driving and responding to change

“We’re seeing more automation coming into play,” said Paul, examining the real-world impact of change. “The technology is advancing and the effect of that is that you are creating choices for the consumer and the supply chain. The supply chain can do it the way they’ve always done it, or they can do it in a way that harnesses new technology and futureproofs their business.

“Our customers are changing, but they are changing at different paces and in different ways. We must change our approach to deal with that. That starts with the products that we’re providing (for example, if you create an autonomous truck, you don’t need to design a comfortable seat for an eight-hour shift because there’s no driver) but it effects every element of our operation, from the people we recruit to how we sell to how we develop the brand.”

Championing Environmentality

Jungheinrich is no newcomer to sustainability—it is an organisation with 70 years of expertise in electromobility. Yet the company’s EcoVadis platinum certification combined with the launch of Environmentality, Jungheinrich’s approach to tackling climate change head on, was a step change in the company’s approach to carbon neutrality. It struck a chord with Paul, who will be leading Jungheinrich UK’s journey towards net zero.

“Jungheinrich is taking the issue of sustainability very seriously and we are seeing this not just in new legislation but in the demands of the customer base.”

Those shifting demands are impacting every element of the Jungheinrich UK operation.

“We are developing our proposition with respect to the environmental footprint of our trucks both during the manufacturing and in the longer-term operational lifecycle. Not only are we leading the way in the lithium ion segment but we also have the Powerline range of trucks with a smaller physical footprint and zero carbon footprint to the point of delivery across the range.”

Journey of change

Central to Jungheinrich’s continued success are its people, and there’s one facet of Jungheinrich that struck Paul from his first day with the company.

“This is a business with a lot of long-serving and passionate employees who know everything about forklifts,” he said. “It seems to run throughout the organisation. Everywhere you go there are lots of people with 20+ years’ service and some have close to double that. I believe this is a sign that the company has been doing things very well, but it is equally a company that sees the world is changing and is inviting and enabling customers to go on this journey of change with us.

“The UK is in my opinion one of the flagship units within the global Jungheinrich organisation and the UK is a major economy. The opportunity to continue the development of the business here in the UK was one of those opportunities that don’t come around too often. Despite the current local and global economic challenges, it’s a good time to be in the industry.”

Jungheinrich UK Ltd is one of the top three leading intralogistics providers in the UK, generating a turnover of over £200 million annually. With a team of more than 800 dedicated and highly experienced employees operating from four locations across the UK, Jungheinrich offers the industry’s widest range of intralogistics solutions, including high energy efficiency pallet trucks, stackers, counterbalance trucks, order pickers and more in 600+ truck variants, new or fully refurbished.

A full intralogistics solutions provider, Jungheinrich excels in automation, racking systems, warehouse planning and financial services and operates one of the largest forklift rental fleets in the UK, all connected by a 500-employee strong customer service support network.

The company is a division of the Jungheinrich AG Group, which has direct sales companies in 40 countries and operates through a partner network in a further 80 countries. Jungheinrich employs 19,000 people worldwide and generated consolidated revenue of €4.2 billion in 2021.
