Southgate Repositions Offer to Customers

Southgate Global, formerly known as Southgate Packaging, has announced a repositioning to communicate its whole offer to customers as an operational logistics and fulfilment equipment, consumables and services supplier, as it enters its next phase of growth.

As part of the reposition, Southgate will be driving new ranges and market leading innovation to meet the changing needs of operational logistics and fulfilment over the next decade. Adding to the existing expertise, Southgate has invested in a highly experienced international leadership team from blue-chip brands to drive the business forward.

Heading up the team is Dan Brasier, who became the firm’s new CEO earlier this year, having been Chief Commercial Officer prior to this. With extensive board level experience working in over 50 countries and for global players such as Nestle and Coca-Cola, Dan’s impressive credentials are set to take the business into its next phase.

He replaced Craig Turner, who departed in April after four years as CEO and following the sale of a majority stake in the business to Rutland Partners in 2021. The acquisition was part of its strategic plans to support the existing team and develop its global footprint and manufacturing capabilities.

Brasier commented: “Southgate has grown at a significant pace over recent years, with record sales and turnover. During this time, the brand has built up a strong reputation as a leading packaging equipment and consumables company, being able to meet all our customers’ key packaging needs with end-to-end solutions. However, in doing so, we have also become one of the best-kept secrets in operational logistics and fulfilment. What we have grown to realise is, that even our customers are unaware of our full offering at Southgate. This extends way beyond simply being one of the best product suppliers in the business.”

Serving over 3,000 customers in more than 20 countries around the world Southgate has a range of operational logistics and fulfilment solutions that support some of the biggest organisations in key sectors including 3PL, e-commerce, retail, post & parcel and general manufacturing.

Brasier explained that the repositioning is designed to highlight both their end-to-end product offering in packaging equipment and consumables and, especially the key services Southgate Global offer. These include their Technical Services offer which maintains, repairs and repurposes their customers’ equipment even if it hasn’t been supplied by Southgate. In addition, they now offer bespoke design and development, sourcing, and even ESG legislative compliance advice.

He added: “The Turner family built the foundations of a very successful business. The new leadership team plan to build on this legacy. In recognising the new challenges in the industry, the timing is right for us to realign the position of Southgate and take the business forward. In the coming months, we will be working closely with our customers and prospects to explain how our full range of solutions, including our core equipment and consumables underpinned by our ESG commitments, can help reduce their operational logistics and fulfilment costs, increase productivity and efficiency all to create value across their organisation.

“Whether operators are looking to move products from production to warehouse, picking and packing 3PL operations or e-commerce sites, sorting and delivering post and parcels, or picking orders from retail store for same-day delivery – Southgate’s sector focus means we understand their specific needs, requirements and challenges and have solutions ready to implement.”
Dan said: “We want them to understand how we can keep their business moving, and through our wealth of equipment, consumables and servicing expertise, backed up by our global sourcing capabilities, we do exactly that. We’re excited for this new chapter for Southgate and for how we can support our customers both now and long into our future.”

Little Green Bag Enhances Sustainable Operations

The Little Green Bag, a leading Dutch fashion retailer known for its carefully curated selection of niche clothing and accessories, announces a strategic partnership with CMC, a pioneer in innovative packaging solutions. This collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing operational efficiency while upholding their commitment to environmental sustainability.

Founded in 2008 by Aramis and Maria Gandjapour a dedicated Dutch couple in Vlaardingen, The Little Green Bag has grown from a small bag retailer to a thriving online platform offering a diverse range of products to include jewellry and accessories, now serving a global clientele. From the beginning, the company has focused in providing a personalized experience and delivering quality products that are both stylish and sustainable. Acknowledging the necessity to adapt to the increasing demands of their growing customer base, the company sought innovative solutions to streamline their operations.

The turning point came when The Little Green Bag decided to venture into online retail, using the house as a warehouse. The growth was phenomenal and this surge in demand necessitated a larger warehouse; in 2012, they invested in a 100 m2 facility. Now, they operate in a vast space of 9,000 m2 with a workforce of 150 people, serving customers globally through a multilingual website.

Sustainable Operations

The rapid surge in orders, particularly during peak periods when order volumes reach up to 8,000 per day presented a packaging challenge for The Little Green Bag. The need to handle a substantial volume of single-line orders while minimizing packaging waste was imperative. Enter CMC and their revolutionary packaging solution, CMC Paper-Pro.

CMC Paper-Pro, a fully automated paper bagging system, was a game-changer and proved to be the perfect fit for The Little Green Bag’s evolving needs. By transitioning from traditional boxes to paper-wrapped bags, the company significantly reduced material consumption and shipping volumes, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing their environmental impact. The system’s flexibility allowed for customization, optimizing warehouse space in a high-cost area.

Lawrence van de Meeberg, Director of e-commerce at The Little Green Bag expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, ” CMC’s approach was impressive. They understood our specific needs and supported us in customizing the footprint to minimize waste and make our operations more sustainable. The integration of CMC Paper Pro has allowed us to not only enhance operational efficiency but also make significant strides in reducing our environmental footprint. It aligns perfectly with our vision of offering quality products sustainably and efficiently.”

Ed Savelsbergh, General Manager of CMC Packaging Automation NL, says “The Little Green Bag continues to thrive as a small department store, offering luxury within reach for all, while maintaining meticulous curation and personal involvement in the product selection process. We are proud to support their business with our technology to enhance efficiency and guarantee a great customer experience.”

Both companies are optimistic about the positive impact this partnership will have on the future of The Little Green Bag. By combining their expertise and innovative solutions, they aim to further elevate their offerings and ensure a seamless shopping experience for their global clientele.

Business technology solutions provider Brother UK has partnered with ECS Global to help the business better support its customers across retail, healthcare, transport and logistics. The partnership, which launched in October 2023, will see ECS Global make the full Brother print portfolio available to the company’s existing and prospective customers.

The agreement covers the Brother PJ range of mobile printers and RJ range of rugged portable devices, alongside the TD line of desktop labelling printers and TJ industrial printer range.
ECS Global, which works with 40,000 clients across 20 time zones, provides an innovative cloud-based media communication suite that helps businesses manage all of their communication channels, from impactful and colourful point of sale, all formats of digital signage, and interactive media displays, through one design suite.

The partners say that the breadth of Brother’s product range, from mobile and desktop to industrial print devices, will enable ECS customers to unlock efficiencies in consumables across their operations without having to compromise on their print hardware.

The new partnership follows the announcement that Brother UK is aiming to double sales across its specialist printing services (SPS) business, which supplies industrial, desktop and mobile printers used for everything from food safety labelling to Auto-ID in warehousing.

Market Opportunity

Over the last two years, Brother UK has partnered with major Auto-ID resellers and vendors in the UK, as well as specialist partners BarcodeGenie and Planglow, to create new routes to market and develop tailored solutions for the retail and food hygiene markets respectively.

Ged Cairns (pictured), head of SPS business category at Brother UK, said: “There is growing demand among businesses across supply chain, retail and hospitality to digitise their day-to-day operations and we have built a strong product proposition to take advantage of this buoyant market.

“Our new partnership with ECS Global will serve to strengthen our position and provide clients with the broadest range of print devices available from a single vendor. In addition to consistent device management and deployment tools, businesses will benefit from simplifying their consumables ordering, service, support and user training. The firm has a significant footprint in the UK and has seamlessly deployed our solutions with customers already, so we’re looking forward to supporting ECS Global with their current and prospective customers moving forward.”

Derek Buchanan, chief executive officer at ECS, said: “When Brother approached us with a partnership proposal, we knew it would be a great opportunity to work with such an instantly recognisable brand, offering the full range of print solutions our customers need. They can now choose devices for each section of their operations from the same vendor to meet any level of print type and volume, which will simplify their administration, boost their workflow efficiencies and help reduce costs.”

FEFPEB at International Pallet Meeting

The European Federation of Wooden Pallet & Packaging Manufacturers (FEFPEB) presented its work on packaging waste and other key issues to global colleagues at the Interpal conference, which was held in Montreal in October.

The event, which is held once every four years, sees members of the international wooden pallet and packaging business discuss developments concerning the industry. It was co-hosted this year by the National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA) and the Canadian Wood Pallet and Container Association (CWPCA).

FEFPEB presented its recent work, including its key involvement in the development of new Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) regulations, and central role in the future circular economy in Europe. Secretary general Fons Ceelaert presented FEFPEB’s awareness campaign Packaging from Nature, which was launched in Europe in 2011 to promote the benefits of using wood for packaging and pallets. The campaign is evolving, with the launch of a new logo and a revamp of the information on its websites.

FEFPEB President Rob van Hoesel, who also attended the Interpal conference, said: “FEFPEB was proud to represent our European membership at Interpal. As one of the world’s most naturally sustainable businesses, the global wooden pallet and packaging sector has an increasingly important role to play in the development of circular supply chains, and in Montreal we were able to share FEFPEB’s industry leading work with our international colleagues.

“The occasion also allowed us to learn from others and work together to progress our shared agenda for an even more innovative, sustainable, and profitable pallet and packaging business for the future.

e-commerce Box-making Solution

Emmeci, a Coesia company in the design and manufacturing of machines and systems for the production of premium packaging, launches E-BM, a complete fit-to-size box making solution for the e-commerce sector.

The ideal packaging is fit-to-size, compact and robust

With e-commerce, the packaging must follow the object’s dimension, to ensure its integrity first and foremost. E-BM produces extremely robust packs: the base of the pack comprises a single piece with no bottom closure, and the corners are reinforced with a double layer of material. The result is an improved resistance to protect items during delivery and a better customer experience. The E-BM is engineered to integrate seamlessly with warehouse control and management systems, enabling the dimension of the packaging to be adapted automatically to end product, on-demand.

The ability to produce right-size packaging means up to 40% smaller packaging sizes (compared to the standard shipping boxes commonly used on the market) and less raw material, saving on paper. Fit-to-size boxes are also more manageable in the downstream phase of the supply chain, facilitating handling and space as well as transport optimization during shipping or delivery, resulting in reduced emissions and inventory footprint.

Up for the challenge

Logistics hubs primarily need systems capable of handling, sorting and packing an increasing number of products of different shapes and sizes. That is why using a partner combining long-term experience in developing rigid box packaging solutions like Emmeci with the strength of a leading industrial automation group like Coesia is crucial. Emmeci and Coesia have created E-BM; a packaging machine specifically designed for the e-commerce sector. E-BM packs into boxes a wide range of goods from sectors such as electronics or fashion, including tablets, PCs, clothing and many other everyday items.

Flexibility and customization

E-BM flexibility allows not just to automatically adapt the box to the dimensions of the product to be shipped, but also to customize the packaging in many different ways, including tape closure. It also offers numerous options for printing codes and labels to assist in package control and traceability processes.

The benefits of having a single partner

Choosing Coesia as a single partner in the e-commerce industry offers infinite advantages, first and foremost that of having an end-to-end solution provider. Coesia seamlessly guides its clients through every leg of their e-commerce automation journey, spanning from box making and filling, through inline printing, up to palletizing. Coesia’s e-commerce solutions revolve around three key domains, finely tuned technologies to elevate operations and ensure customer satisfaction.

Firstly, Coesia pack automation solutions redefine wrapping, box making, box filling and inline printing for the e-commerce industry. Tailored to perfection, these solutions cater to the need for right-sized, customized package, ensuring a superior customer experience.

Secondly, the E-Fulfilment solutions usher in a new era of process automation, meticulously crafted to address the ever-evolving challenges faced by e-commerce players. From conveying solutions to ground-breaking sorting equipment, the portfolio is designed to optimize every facet of their operations.

Lastly, Coesia advanced robotics capabilities ensure secure handling of a diverse array of products, boxes, and cases, for a seamless journey from picking systems to palletizing and depalletizing equipment.

In the dynamic world of e-commerce, Coesia shines as a pioneer in cutting-edge technology and customer-focused solutions. Innovation and user-friendliness are at the core of highly advanced technological solutions, all geared towards delivering agility, flexibility, and efficiency.

A sector experiencing double-digit growth

The e-commerce packaging sector is worth around 60 billion dollars globally and is more dynamic than ever. According to forecasts, it will grow by 13.8% over the next five years to over USD 115 billion in 2028. E-commerce is now the preferred sales channel for a wide range of goods, including consumer goods, food, hi-tech and fashion. The sector’s expansion involves more than logistics and transport; the related packaging world is also experiencing growth and change.

Docket Grab Warehouse Hanging Sign

When the Samworth Brothers company was looking for a new hanging sign for its chilled distribution site in Leicester they chose to partner with inotec which specialises in supplying bespoke warehouse labelling and line marking solutions. The result is an innovative ‘docket grab’ hanging sign that uses ball bearings to grip dockets. These signs, which can be either single or double-sided, are now being used in the pick by line area of Samworth’s Oak Meadow facility.

The Samworth Brothers site in Oak Meadow Leicester has a storage capacity of over 10,000 pallets across chill, deep chill and frozen. Around 580 people work on the site with orders being picked by 160 warehouse operatives.

Glyn Maude is General Manager, Samworth Brothers Supply Chain, he explains why the new sign was needed, “As our business has grown rapidly over the last few years we needed to change how we picked orders in this warehouse. Originally the whole area was racked, but it was decided to take part of the racking down to create a pedestrian only picking area surrounded by barriers.

“This meant we could present the products to the pickers in that area instead of getting them to pick out of the racking. The lanes of pallets run towards the racking area and the stock comes into the picking area from underneath the racking, deposited by fork lift truck.

“I knew that I would need hanging signs for the new area but couldn’t see anything suitable on the market. I’d seen other companies using drainpipes cut into segments with a slit to hold a label and I’d thought that there has to be a better way of doing this so I approached Steve Towler at inotec. I already knew Steve as he’d helped me with line marking and signs for our marshalling lanes here in Leicester and done a great job. Once I’d given him the size of sign and what it needed to do, he went away and came up with the docket grab concept. A couple of mock-ups later, we had our ‘docket grab’ hanging sign.

“One of the qualities I like about inotec is that they help me plan out and design what I need. They also give me an honest and accurate quotation regarding the cost; I get a lot of good advice from them. The idea of using ball bearings to grip the pallet labels was all inotec’s.

“In the pedestrian only zone the picker collects the pallet of stock using a hand pallet truck and walks down the picking line of pallets. He then scans the pallet label that is held in the hanging sign above a pallet, this details a retailer’s order. The label tells them how many cases to put on that particular pallet for that order. This allows us to control what stock is going where.

“We know when a pallet is fully picked as we’ve set the height of the hanging sign and the length of the label to indicate the full height of an order. When the pallet is full the picker can clearly see there is no room for more stock on that pallet. This means we have uniformity for all the pallets we’re picking. Prior to this we were sending pallets out that were all different heights – not many were too high but some were too low, now they all come out at a standard height.

“Our new way of working has helped us reduce the amount of pallets we’re sending out to retailers. It also ensures we fill the trucks up as much as we can so that we don’t put additional vehicles on the road. This reduces our distribution costs benefitting both us and our customers.

“A further advantage of the hanging signs is that the pallet labels are now up in the air and out of the way – before they were stuck on the pallet and could fall off, get stuck to something else or just generally go missing! The new sign system prevents this happening.

“Our pick accuracy is already really high at 99.98 per cent but we still have a margin for error that we want to eliminate. Although we’ve only been operating this pick by line system for a short time I am expecting to see an improvement in picking accuracy.

“The signage work that inotec has done here for us is great. We work really well together as our two companies have a lot in common in terms of work ethic and the way we view things. It’s a fantastic business, I’d give them ten out of ten every time.”

New Digital Capabilities for Korrvu® Packaging

To improve turnaround time from design to production, SEE® introduces new digital die cutting capabilities for its SEALED AIR® brand Korrvu® retention and suspension packaging.

This new offering replaces traditional die tooling with digital die cutting, which speeds up production lead times from months to weeks.

Digital-first production also allows customers to place smaller minimum order quantities, so they don’t have to store excess packaging at their business.

Korrvu® retention and suspension packaging uses a strong, low-slip film to surround products, protecting them from shock and vibration with very good visibility. The packaging is kerbside recyclable with the plastic film attached to simplify recycling by consumers and improve sustainability.

“Korrvu® packaging solutions were traditionally cut with physical dies that were made to order for each customer. That process could take months to perfect,” said Ingo Lublow, EMEA Director Protective & Equipment Marketing at SEE. “Our new digital Korrvu® capabilities eliminate the need for custom tooling, so our customers can get their designs prototyped, sampled, and into production much more quickly.”

With the new digital offering, customers can:

• Get more design flexibility: Editing designs can be quicker because new physical tooling isn’t required, so customers can more easily customize designs by product, season, location, and customer. Unique cutouts and laser engraving on the corrugate help differentiate products and packaging from others in the market.

• Switch to on-demand production and ordering: Digital technology allows high-volume and short-run Korrvu® orders to be produced on demand, helping customers keep just the right amount of packaging on hand while freeing up storage space in warehouses.

• Improve sustainability: Digital finishing simplifies the supply chain to reduce the carbon footprint. Plus, Korrvu® retention and suspension packaging is made with at least 50% recycled content, is reusable, and is kerbside recyclable.
