High Cube Trailers for ASDA Clothing

ASDA Stores Ltd has introduced 35 Tiger assets to its George clothing fleet in the form of 4.9m tall ‘high cube’ trailers featuring an internal tail-lift to reflect the customer’s special operational requirements. The side-mounted D’hollandia platform inside each of the 35 new step frame trailers tailored for George clothing brand duties has a capacity of 500kg and operates up and down the length of the trailer.

Operatives can manoeuvre this internal platform longitudinally and vertically, enabling them to position the 150 load-securing bars to suit the internal roof mounted tracks and 9 horizontal tracks fitted at various heights down each side of the trailer internally.

Gavin Town, Senior Manager – National Fleet for ASDA Stores Ltd, says: “The Tiger team visited our site a number of times and truly listened to our needs and have delivered the goods with these High Cube trailers. We would like to thank them for their attention to detail and the continued support they show us as a business.”

Tiger is known for customising the trailers and rigids it manufactures to meet the exacting requirements of each of its end-user customers, and the specification of these specialist garment transport trailers built for ASDA also includes an internal step for safer access to the neck area, safety gates on the moving platform, a Nexus ground-level coupling, Axscend tyre pressure monitoring, and external heat treatment paint for the roof.

Darren Holland, Sales Director at Tiger Trailers, comments: “We always relish the opportunity to demonstrate our ability to design, engineer and manufacture bespoke vehicles to suit our customers’ unique operations and are delighted to have worked with the ASDA team on these garment transportation trailers.”

Tiger Trailers has supplied articulated vehicles to ASDA for a number of years and is currently manufacturing 90 additional moving deck trailers, taking the supermarket’s Tiger fleet to over 500 assets. The new clothing trailers primarily operate out of its Brackmills, Limedale, and Washington NEC sites.

Asda Invests in new Bio-LNG Refuelling Stations

Asda is investing in two new Bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas) refuelling facilities, as the retailer continues to make progress towards reducing overall carbon emissions.

Working closely with Gasrec – a major fuel provider for commercial vehicles in the UK – the new refuelling facilities in Warrington and Dartford now mean Asda has thirteen fully operational Bio-LNG stations strategically located across the UK.

With over 780 vehicles, Asda operates the largest fleet of LNG fuelled trucks in the UK, with this type of fuel a leading, lower carbon alternative to diesel. Through the new infrastructure, Asda will continue its efforts to decarbonise its operations, aiming to achieve net zero operations by 2040.

Earlier this year, Asda revealed in its annual ESG report it had reduced operational carbon emissions (scope 1 & 2) in 2023 by 41% since 2015, with a target to achieve a 50% reduction by 2025.

John Rogerson, Central Fleet Operations Manager at Asda, said: “LNG trucks are currently the leading alternative fuel option for operators like ourselves and with over 780 LNG vehicles, we operate the largest fleet of LNG fuelled trucks in the UK. Our continued investment in a UK-wide LNG distribution network forms an essential part of our objective to reduce overall carbon emissions across our operations, and towards building a sustainable business for the future.”

James Westcott, Chief Commercial Officer of Gasrec, says: “We have forged a strong relationship with Asda and it’s a real pleasure to be able to deliver these two latest facilities for them, as they continue to expand their growing gas fleet and invest in a cleaner and greener fuel source.

“As one of the UK’s largest retailers, Asda understands the urgency in the need to cut emissions from its fleet as we all work towards a more sustainable transport sector. Bio-LNG remains a leading alternative to diesel for long-haul operations and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.”

This investment comes after Asda recently launched a new sustainability-linked enhancement to its Supply Chain Finance scheme in partnership with HSBC UK. Launching in January 2025, the facility will see the retailer use financial incentives to encourage better sustainability practices within its supply chain.

ASDA Introduces Moving Deck Trailers

ASDA, a leading UK supermarket, is midway through welcoming to its fleet an initial order of 167 new vehicles manufactured by Tiger Trailers, comprised of 147 tri-axle box van moving deck double deck trailers for UK operation, and 20 for the retailer’s Northern Ireland ferry-use operations.

Tiger’s new trailer solution for Asda provides up to a 44-pallet carrying capacity, and incorporates a ¾ length moving deck for versatility, powered by the Cheshire manufacturer’s in-house, 4-ram hydraulic system. The three vibrant livery variations and memorable slogans make the new fleet assets an eye-catching sight on the road.

Peter Hey, Asda’s fleet procurement manager, says: “We have collaborated with the Tiger team individuals in previous companies, but this order is the first time that we have worked with them directly at Tiger. Engagement with the Tiger team was excellent from the outset, including a number of visitors to their factory, and we are extremely happy with the trailers that they have produced. Tiger’s support has been fantastic throughout.”

Moving Deck Trailers

Tiger Trailers is known for manufacturing bespoke articulated trailers and rigid bodywork to meet its end users’ unique requirements, and Asda’s new double deck trailers have been designed for transporting both cages and UK pallets. Safety for its people and others is paramount for the supermarket, as evidenced by the fitment of a large number of warning and information labels to its trailers, along with cycle safety notices. A ferry trestle support is built into the neck area for Asda’s RoRo operations, air suspension and a roll stability programme enhance cargo integrity, and the controls for the moving deck are positioned to enable operation from both ground level and from store loading bays.

Darren Holland, Tiger Trailers’ Sales Director, comments: “Working with Peter and the Asda team has been a great experience. From the initial on-site meetings to view their operations to sharing the 3D model of their precise trailer at the factory and finally presenting the trailer in our showroom to the Asda team we are really happy with the final product. These trailers will be servicing the Asda ambient operation, and we look forward to working with the Asda team in the future.”

A significant proportion of Asda’s 167 new Tiger-built double deck trailers can already be seen in service on the road, primarily operating from the supermarket’s ambient distribution centres that are situated throughout the UK, along with its Irish Sea Carriers routes.
