Third Award for Reggio Emilia Battery Firm

Reggio Emilia, Italy’s Flash Battery has won the ‘Enterprises for Innovation award for the third time, awarded by Confindustria to 12 Italian companies that successfully invested in research and innovation. The Sant’Ilario d’Enza-based company – one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of lithium batteries for industrial machinery and electric vehicles – took to the highest step of the podium, standing next to giants of the pharmaceutical, computer and aerospace industries.

“The satisfaction we are feeling is huge,” said Flash Battery CEO Marco Righi (pictured), “but I think it’s the same for the entire small and medium enterprise segment of which we are a part and which sees in this award the recognition of its decisive role in generating innovation in our country and turning it into jobs and development for the local communities.”

Flash Battery has been on a fast growth trajectory since it was launched as a start-up in 2012, reaching in 2022 a revenue of €22.3 million, international sales of €4.6 million and a staff of over 100 strong (20+ in the nine months into 2023).

“Our development has been driven by our continued investment in young people, research and innovation with the mindset that sustainability must be built into the products as well as the processes, and it has also translated into a number of social initiatives embraced by all our collaborators,” explained Righi.

The Enterprises for Innovation award to Flash Battery comes right at a time when the company is making a substantial investment into its Sant’Ilario d’Enza headquarters, inaugurated just two years ago by Emilia-Romagna region governor Stefano Bonaccini. “Our revenue and staff have practically doubled since then,” said Righi, “and today we are involved in an expansion project that will further strengthen the sustainability features of our facility and processes and gear up the company for its next technological and volume leap.”

This new accolade from Confindustria (an award created in collaboration with the Giuseppina Mai Foundation and Audi, the support of Fondimpresa and Il Sole 24 Ore, and the technical support of the Associazione Premio Qualità Italia) adds to Flash Battery’s impressive number of prestigious honours, positioning the company as one of the most dynamic in Reggio Emilia in terms of innovation, development intensity, and recruitment of young people – in fact, the average age of the company’s 105 employees is less than 34.

Davies Turner’s Health and Safety Hat-trick

For a third year in a row, the health and safety standards across the Davies Turner Group have led the UK Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to presenting the company with an internationally-recognised award.

The leading global freight forwarding and logistics group has received a third consecutive RoSPA Gold Award in recognition of the high standards of its safety performance during the period from January 01, 2022, to December 31, 2022. Carl Inman (pictured), group health & safety, insurance and environmental manager, says the RoSPA Gold Award is a highly coveted and respected accolade in what is the UK’s longest-running H&S industry awards.

He adds: “In a very competitive awards scheme, to receive a Gold Award once is an achievement. The latest award, along with our other certifications, adds to Davies Turner’s list of achievements in the field of internationally-recognised standards of quality, health & safety, and environmental management.

“It further demonstrates our commitment to all of the company’s stakeholders, including our clients that are increasingly seeking greater evidence that Davies Turner is fully engaged with environmental, social and compliance issues, as they seek reassurance that they are dealing with a company that fully understands and effectively manages its corporate social responsibilities.”

Beumer wins best-managed companies award

Beumer Group has won the Axia Best Managed Companies Award 2021: at the beginning of May the consulting company Deloitte honoured the systems provider for its successful and well-managed medium-sized company.

As the founder of the Axia Award, Deloitte, together with the German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche and the Federation of German Industries (BDI), is again awarding this prestigious prize this year. Beumer is taking part for the fourth time.

“From the very beginning, our company has stood for values such as integrity and ethics, customer focus, quality and innovation, teamwork and sustainability,” says Dr Chirstoph Beumer, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of the Beumer Group. The group of companies lives these and has also set them down in writing in guiding principles.

“The way a company behaves towards its employees and customers shows the importance it attaches to its values and how consciously it deals with them,” Beumer describes.

The systems provider thus sees its employees as part of the Beumer family, not as a resource. Employees should develop and not be consumed. That is why the company calls its HR department People and Culture (P&C). “The designation ‘People and Culture’ expresses the value principle by which we act according to our leadership culture in the family business,” says Beumer. “And it supports the Beumer employer brand, because corporate culture attracts talent.”

The Beumer Group offers exciting prospects and a varied working environment for its employees in the Münsterland mechanical engineering region. The system provider has been able to record large increases in recent years – and has gained a very good international reputation with forward-looking solutions for intralogistics in conveying and loading technology, palletising and packaging technology as well as sorting and distribution systems.

At the moment, for example, the aim is to push ahead with digitalisation to the fullest extent. To this end, the Beumer Group has launched two spin-offs in addition to the existing innovation department. Beam GmbH, a self-sufficient company builder, was established in Berlin. “We try to solve unique problems in logistics together with teams of founders,” says Dr Beumer. “We want to find founders with business ideas that are relevant to us. To do this, we found three start-ups per year and transfer them into their own company under the Beam umbrella.” The aim is to open up new business fields in logistics.

Toyota Material Handling Retains EcoVadis Platinum Ranking

Since 2012, Toyota Material Handling Europe has been continuously assessed by EcoVadis, with focus on key topics including environment, labour & human rights, sustainable procurement and ethics. During recent years, Toyota has consistently received Gold level scores, but now – two years in a row – the Platinum award has been achieved by the company. This is the highest possible score, ranking Toyota Material Handling amongst the top 1% of companies in the ‘general-purpose machinery’ sector.

EcoVadis provides the sustainability ratings of more than 75.000 companies worldwide, based on their environmental, social and ethical performance. Its online platform provides desktop sustainability assessment, allowing 175 multinationals to access ratings of their selected suppliers across 155 countries.

“In my role, I am committed to lead the way and make sure we continue integrating sustainability throughout the way we run our business”, says Ernesto Domínguez, who became President and CEO of Toyota Material Handling Europe last year.

“The EcoVadis assessment system is very important for us, because this makes it easier for our customers to choose the right partners for the future. This audit helps us work in the area of Kaizen [continuous improvement]. I am very proud that we are the first in the material handling industry to achieve platinum recognition. This gives reassurance to our customers and also fulfils our responsibility to inspire others to strive for the highest standards” concludes Domínguez.

Group effort to increase transparency through the network

All Toyota Material Handling’s European factories and local entities undergo this yearly survey, which results in the individual scoring of each entity. This responds to customers’ requests at local level – which have continued to increase since 2020.

Over 50% of TMHE local entities are now achieving Gold or Platinum scores, meaning they are individually at the same level as the top 10% best rated companies. As of today, Toyota Material Handling UK, Toyota Material Handling Italia, and Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing France have achieved the Platinum label, while 11 other local operations have achieved the Gold standard.

In 2018, Toyota Material Handling Europe also received the first ever Supplier Excellence Award from EcoVadis for ‘Best Group Engagement’. The award represented Toyota’s commitment to transparency on the performance of all local entities, Gold rating for 30% of subsidiaries, and a top 3% ranking in the industry.

WITRON wins “Bavaria Best 50” Award

The year 2021 is a special year for WITRON. Founded in 1971 by Walter Winkler (pictured above) and his wife Hildegard, the company has been an innovation driver and mastermind in the design, realization, and operation of efficient automated logistics centers as well as a reliable employer in the region for 50 years. And to kick off the anniversary year, there was a special award from the Bavarian State Government.

Selected from almost 8,000 medium-sized companies in Bavaria, WITRON belongs to one of “Bavaria’s Best 50. The award, usually presented in the course of an award ceremony in Munich, was received by the family company from Parkstein shortly before Christmas together with a video message in the mail.

The sponsor of the award is the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy. Together with an independent jury, this institution selects and evaluates especially fast-growing mid-sized companies in Bavaria for the nomination. Decisive for this nomination was the sustainable success of the company as well as the striking growth figures of WITRON. Last year alone, almost 500 additional staff members were hired worldwide, bringing the total number of employees to 4,500. More than 100 trainees started their professional career at WITRON in 2020. And WITRON continues to grow – especially in the IT area. The company founder sees the technological and competitive advantage of WITRON’s solutions geared towards retail and distribution logistics, as well as the high level of customer trust, and the reliable implementation of customer projects as the basis of success for the continuous growth.

“This award is a very positive signal not only for us as a company and employer, but also for our region. We are very proud to be among Bavaria’s best mid-sized companies – this is a clear sign that diligence and years of commitment are rewarded,” says company founder Walter Winkler.

Last year WITRON celebrated its 25th anniversary of being present on the North American market.
