First Anniversary for UK Warehouse

cargo-partner, a group company of Nippon Express Holdings, is celebrating a year of transformation at its Basildon, Essex warehouse.

Since cargo-partner acquired the warehouse in April 2024, the facility has evolved into a key logistics and distribution hub serving both the UK and continental Europe. Over the past 12 months, cargo-partner has expanded its team, upskilled its workforce, and broadened its service offerings, solidifying Basildon as a strategic asset in the company’s global operations. Located in a prime position for logistics operations, the Basildon facility now serves as a fully-fledged road and warehouse hub, offering a comprehensive range of solutions designed to support businesses, retailers, and industries across the UK and Europe.

To mark one year since cargo-partner took over the warehouse – and to recognize the synergies and partnership between the cargo-partner and Nippon Express teams in the UK – an anniversary celebration was held at the Basildon site. Attendees included all local cargo-partner colleagues, along with Fergal Keenan, Managing Director of cargo-partner UK & Ireland; Thomas Peklar, Corporate Director Product Management Contract Logistics at cargo-partner; and Steve Williams, Managing Director of Nippon Express UK & Ireland.

Fergal Keenan, Managing Director of cargo-partner UK & Ireland, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made at our Basildon facility over the past year. The site has transformed into a pivotal logistics hub, playing a crucial role in connecting the UK and continental Europe. It was great to recognize this milestone with colleagues from both cargo-partner and Nippon Express and we’re excited to continue to grow our services, delivering innovative, efficient solutions for our customers.”

A strategic location for efficient operations

The Basildon warehouse, covering 4,460 m², is perfectly positioned to serve as a critical junction for road transport and logistics across the UK and Europe. With easy access to key transport routes and proximity to major ports, it is ideally situated to optimize both local and cross-border supply chains. cargo-partner has implemented a range of new value-added services, making Basildon the go-to hub for companies looking for dependable logistics solutions.

Driving Digital Transformation for Cargo

At cargo-partner, a group company of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., digitalization is key to shaping the future of logistics and enhancing the customer experience. The company has made significant strides in recent years by integrating advanced digital platforms and data management systems across its organization. Central to this digital transformation is the expertise of cargo-partner’s IT leadership, with women leaders playing an instrumental role in driving these innovations.

Streamlining Logistics Processes

cargo-partner’s commitment to customer-centric digital solutions is evident in its recent developments in IT systems and platforms. “We’ve always aimed to streamline processes and improve efficiency to deliver the best possible experience for our customers,” said Nadezhda Hauer, Head of Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics at cargo-partner. “One of our key milestones has been the implementation of CargoWise across all global locations. This, alongside our proprietary supply chain management platform, SPOT, has enabled us to integrate data across systems and external data sources, giving our customers faster, more transparent services and better control over their shipments.”

Maximizing Customer Value with Salesforce Integration

But CargoWise is just one aspect of cargo-partner’s recent digital transformation efforts. Liandre Vasco, Team Leader IT Sales Applications, has been instrumental in maximizing customer engagement through Salesforce integration. “Salesforce has allowed us to create a 360-degree view of our customer relationships,” Liandre Vasco explained. “This enables us to proactively address customer needs, enhance communication, and ensure that we deliver personalized, responsive service – critical elements in today’s competitive market.”

Enhancing Financial Operations for Seamless Business

On the financial side, Anna Nowak, Team Leader of Finance Applications, has led efforts to optimize financial processes through digital tools. “We’ve leveraged advanced digital invoicing solutions to streamline billing and payment processes, which have directly benefited our customers by improving accuracy, transparency, and speed,” Anna Nowak said. “These innovations not only support our internal efficiency but also enable us to provide faster and more accurate billing for our customers, in many cases integrated forward with the customers’ ERP.”

Fostering Passion and Confidence

At cargo-partner, fostering gender balance and empowering women to excel in IT are priorities embedded in the company’s organizational culture. Yet, challenges persist, not only within the industry but also within the mindset of potential candidates.

“Our biggest hurdle is that very few women apply for IT positions, and when they do, they often aim lower than their experience warrants,” Nadezhda Hauer explained. “Women need to stop waiting, stop doubting, and start stepping up. Passion is the key. If you love the work, you belong here. Women often try to check every box in job descriptions before applying. But that’s not the point – growth comes from challenging yourself. I’ve seen women diminish their knowledge in interviews or undervalue themselves during salary negotiations. This needs to change. As leaders at cargo-partner, we recognize and address these gaps.”

The IT field offers boundless opportunities, flexibility, and pathways for growth. At cargo-partner, teams across regions already achieve gender parity or even majority-female representation in areas like data processing. “Historically, these roles were undervalued. Today, they’re pivotal, and women must realize they belong in every corner of the IT landscape,” Hauer emphasized. By fostering a diverse workforce, cargo-partner is not only enriching its work culture but also ensuring that the company remains innovative and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of its customers.

Completion of cargo-partner Acquisition

NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., is pleased to announce that, in accordance with the share transfer agreement concluded on May 12, 2023 with cargo-partner Group Holding AG and its subsidiaries Multi Transport und Logistik Holding AG, Safer Overseas Transport Holding GmbH, cargo-partner GND GmbH, and CARGO-PARTNER US HOLDINGS INC. (hereinafter collectively referred to as “cargo-partner”), it acquired all shares of several cargo-partner subsidiaries based mainly in Central and Eastern Europe that provide logistics services worldwide on January 4, 2024 through a special purpose company that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nippon Express Europe GmbH (President: Shinichi Kakiyama), itself a European holding subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, and completed all procedures required to make these newly-acquired companies subsidiaries of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS.

Headquartered in Austria, cargo-partner has a robust logistics business base in Central and Eastern Europe, a region that is increasingly attracting attention as an industrial cluster in Europe. It is a highly reputable corporate group focused principally on air and ocean freight forwarding in Europe, Asia, and North America that also offers rail and truck transport and contract logistics services.

The subsidiarization of cargo-partner will complement the NX Group’s logistics infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, expected to see significant future growth as a production base within the European region, and will enable the NX Group to further expand its global network and enhance the services it provides in the European region.

The resultant expansion in the volume of air and ocean freight handled will also strengthen the Group’s competitiveness in the global market, enable it to respond to the diverse demands of its global customers, enhance its ability to meet logistics demand between Asia and Europe and elsewhere, and bolster its global account structure.

Since the NX Group and cargo-partner have differing customer bases and differing strengths in specific countries and regions, they will seek to create synergies in their logistics operations through mutual complementation, thereby accelerating the expansion and development of their global businesses.

Going forward, the NX Group and cargo-partner will maximize the synergies they generate as a unified entity to help create value for the NX Group’s customers and stakeholders.

In Austria, members of this association also produced laptop bags and pencil cases from truck tarpaulins that were used as give-aways at transport logistic in Munich.

iLogistics Centre in Slovakia Doubles Capacity

On Tuesday November 14th the international transport and logistics provider cargo-partner officially launched the construction of the third warehouse hall at its iLogistics Centre in Dunajská Streda. The expansion will almost double the storage capacity from the current 27,600 to 50,000 pallet spaces. Upon completion, cargo-partner will create 60 to 70 additional jobs at the new facility.

cargo-partner has been operating in Slovakia for 30 years and is one of the most successful freight forwarding providers in the country. The company earned a turnover of nearly 140 million euro in 2022 and currently employs more than 200 logistics specialists across its branch offices in Bratislava, Dunajská Streda, Žilina, and Košice.

Boosting capacity

The iLogistics Centre in Dunajská Streda has been in operation since 2012, gradually expanding to meet growing customer demand for logistics solutions. The previous expansion in 2020 increased the warehouse capacity to 18,200 m². The construction of the third hall marks the fourth and final phase of the project, bringing the storage capacity of the logistics complex to 34,300 m² on a site of 60,000 m².

The new Class A warehouse building was designed with an emphasis on energy efficiency. It will feature a racking system with 22,400 pallet spaces spread over 14,600 m², as well as a structurally separated area of 1,500 m² that can serve as a dust-free warehouse or a rework zone. The facility will include 22 loading ramps and two drive-in gates for efficient loading and unloading. There are also plans to install a second KLT washing machine in addition to the one at the existing facility.

Direct connection to Metrans terminal

The warehouse’s strategic location and direct connection to the Metrans intermodal terminal allow cargo-partner to reduce handling time by one to two days, resulting in significant ecological and economic advantages. “Thanks to our connection to the intermodal terminal, we can unload containers arriving by train from the ports of Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Koper, Rotterdam, Trieste, and Istanbul directly into our warehouse, eliminating the need for truck transport. Our cross-dock hub has nine container loading and unloading gates as well as a separate gate for heavy and oversized goods,” said Tibor Majzún, Managing Director Slovak Republic and Regional Director North East Europe at cargo-partner. Currently, cargo-partner is the only company in Slovakia to provide this service.

Operations are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. In the first phase, cargo-partner will hire 20 new employees. Once the new warehouse hall is fully operational, this is expected to increase to 60-70 positions.

The official ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Dr. Johannes Wimmer, Ambassador of Austria to Slovakia, Mag. Bettina Trojer, Commercial Counsellor of the Austrian Embassy, and Ing. Alena Blahútová, Corporate Director Real Estate of ATL Immoinvest.

Mag. Stefan Krauter, Founder and CEO of cargo-partner, emphasized the importance of the iLogistics Centre: “Our Slovak team is a top performer in our group, and I am glad they have recognized and taken advantage of Dunajská Streda’s potential as a vital intermodal hub, turning it into a thriving logistics centre. It is now one of our most important rail cargo hubs in Europe, enabling us to deliver automotive components to leading OEMs in various Central European countries. With the addition of a third warehouse hall, we are continuing our success story with yet another prime logistics location in Dunajská Streda. The expansion will be managed by the Central Eastern European logistics real estate specialist ATL.”

The cargo-partner iLogistics Centre in Dunajská Streda currently has a capacity of 27,600 pallet spaces on 18,200 m², with over 11,000 m² dedicated to customs bonded warehouse space. LCL Service for Dangerous Goods

The international transport and logistics provider cargo-partner has once again expanded its range of LCL solutions and introduced a new sea freight consolidation service for dangerous goods from China to Europe. The service is suitable for a wide range of products and industries, including automotive components, car batteries and electronic goods with various types of integrated batteries.

As shipping companies react to lower demand with blank sailings, cargo-partner has recognized the need to offer its customers more flexibility and respond to special requirements. To meet these challenges, the logistics provider has introduced a new weekly consolidated transport service for goods that are classified as DG Class 8 and DG Class 9 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This classification includes products such as various types of batteries, whole electric vehicles, handheld power tools, e-bikes and e-scooters as well as many other electronic devices with an integrated power source.

cargo-partner offers this service with weekly departures from Shanghai to Koper and average port-to-port transit times of 29 days. An additional door-to-door service includes pickup and consolidation from anywhere in China, deconsolidation at cargo-partner’s logistics centres in Budapest and Ljubljana, and delivery to any destination in Europe. In addition, the logistics provider can offer a range of ocean shipper’s and buyer’s consolidation options.

“Many of our customers are currently looking for a reliable solution for their import shipments from Asia – especially for industries that require specific battery components,” explains Felix Miletich, Corporate Director Product Management Sea Cargo LCL at cargo-partner. “With our dedicated LCL services for dangerous goods that include a wide variety of batteries, accumulators and other rechargeable cells, we can provide a stable and reasonable alternative to other forms of transportation.”

Additional air and road transport solutions for dangerous goods

In addition to this cost-effective LCL sea freight service, the transport provider also offers air freight and road transport solutions for DG cargo on request. cargo-partner long-standing experience in transporting dangerous goods from Asia to Europe and vice versa, as well as on other popular international transport routes, including door-to-door solutions, customs clearance and comprehensive logistics services through the company’s extensive warehouse network.

Warehouse Portfolio in Southeast Europe

As one of the leading transport and logistics providers in Southeast Europe, cargo-partner has traditionally placed a strategic focus on this region. In recent months, the company has upgraded its warehouse facilities in Croatia, Slovenia and Türkiye.

Expansion in Zagreb: from 12,900 to 17,500 m²

In late August 2023, cargo-partner expanded its warehouse in Zagreb by 4,600 m² due to rapidly growing customer demand in Croatia. The warehouse was opened in June 2022 and is located ten minutes from the international airport in Zagreb. The latest expansion brings the logistics center’s capacity from the previous 12,900 m² to a total of 17,500 m². The modern facility now includes 20,000 pallet slots as well as a 900 m² mezzanine where the local team provides e-fulfillment and value added services. In addition to short- and long-term storage, the Zagreb warehouse offers daily pallet and parcel distribution to EU- and non-EU countries, a customs bonded area and customs brokerage services. Following the expansion, the warehouse now contains 28 truck docks and three drive-in gates for oversized shipments.

“As we celebrate 40 remarkable years of cargo-partner, it is important to recognize the invaluable role Southeast Europe has played in shaping our company’s enduring success. This expansion is a testament to the extraordinary journey we’ve embarked on together with our customers and our expert teams throughout the region,” said Stefan Krauter, CEO & Founder of cargo-partner.

Zoran Starcevic, Managing Director of cargo-partner in Croatia, stated: “The added storage capacity in Zagreb will allow us to stock a wider range of products – from foodstuffs to pharmaceuticals and a variety of other goods – and respond promptly to market fluctuations and customer needs. Thus, the expansion not only strengthens our market position, but also reinforces our promise to deliver top-notch products and services to our customers.”

Otto Zsivkovits, Regional Director SEE, added: “Our expansion in Zagreb is part of our strategic plan to strengthen our footprint in Southeast Europe, as this region holds immense importance for cargo-partner. In this context, Zagreb serves as a gateway connecting Eastern and Western Europe. As we continue to expand our network, we benefit from growing synergies between our logistics centers in Croatia, Slovenia, Türkiye, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

Rooftop delivers clean energy in Ljubljana

Earlier in August, cargo-partner installed a photovoltaic system with 1,192 panels on the roof of its iLogistics Center Ljubljana. The system will produce an estimated 575 MWh of energy per year, covering 34 percent of cargo-partner’s energy consumption in Slovenia. In addition, the solar power plant will save 146 tons of CO₂ annually, which is equivalent to planting 6,698 trees. The iLogistics Center Ljubljana was opened in 2019 and expanded in 2022, bringing its total capacity from 25,000 m² up to 39,100 m².

New iLogistics Center in Istanbul

In July 2023, cargo-partner opened a new iLogistics Center with 20,000 m² of warehouse space in Istanbul. With 25,000 pallet slots and 17 loading docks, the facility provides ideal conditions for customs bonded warehousing, handling of oversized goods and high-tech products, fast trans-shipment and distribution as well as comprehensive e-fulfilment services, including a parcel pickup and return point. In addition to the warehouse facility, the building also contains modern office spaces, providing the new base of operations for cargo-partner’s head office in Türkiye.

Strong warehouse network in Southeast Europe

Aside from these recent expansions, cargo-partner has long had a solid warehouse network in Southeast Europe. In Bulgaria, the logistics provider’s iLogistics Center Sofia offers 22,000 pallet slots on 16,700 m². In Serbia, cargo-partner maintains a strategically located warehouse near the Belgrade airport with 8,000 m² of storage space. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, cargo-partner operates a 1,000 m² warehouse, to which the company has recently added a separate 300 m² area for temporary customs bonded storage.
