New 20,000 m² Warehouse in Istanbul

In the year of cargo-partner’s fifth anniversary in Türkiye, the international transport and logistics provider has opened a new iLogistics Center with 20,000 m² of warehouse space in Istanbul. Close to the new Istanbul airport and the region’s main seaports, and ideally connected to Europe via North Marmara Highway, the Center offers a wide range of logistics services to cargo-partner’s customers in Türkiye.

With a total storage area of 20,000 m², including 5,850 m² of bonded warehouse space, cargo-partner’s iLogistics Center Istanbul represents a new milestone for the company’s organization in Türkiye. The new iLogistics Center will create more than 85 new jobs, increasing the total number of cargo-partner employees in Türkiye to almost 250 by the end of the year. cargo-partner established its Türkiye branch in 2018 and now offers its services at eleven locations in the country. The company’s particular strengths in Türkiye include temperature-controlled foodstuffs shipments as well as EMERGENCY services by air and road. In addition, to combat the recent driver shortages in Europe, the logistics provider is offering a growing number of short sea services as an alternative to trucking.

Over 20,000 pallet slots and flexible multi-modal services

The warehouse provides a capacity of more than 20,000 pallet slots and has 17 loading docks for all vehicle types, enabling fast trans-shipment, customs bonded warehousing and distribution throughout the region. The facility’s modern design allows for efficient handling and storage of oversized goods, flexible multi-modal services and comprehensive high-tech logistics solutions. Part of the new warehouse is dedicated to fulfilment services, including a parcel pickup and return point. The warehouse is an important addition to cargo-partner’s network in the region and was added due to strong demand from cargo-partner’s customers for warehousing services.

New head office for cargo-partner in Türkiye

In addition to the warehouse facility, the building also contains modern office spaces, providing the new base of operations for cargo-partner’s head office in Türkiye. “Istanbul is not just the heart of trade in Türkiye, but also a major hub for the entire surrounding region. This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye along with the 40th anniversary of cargo-partner and the fifth anniversary of cargo-partner in Türkiye – a perfect occasion to diversify our services and strengthen our position in the country. This new, intelligent logistics facility will enable us to provide a range of fulfillment services for online retailers and meet the requirements of current and future logistics challenges,” said Kürşad Tanrıverdi, Managing Director of cargo-partner Türkiye.

Group-wide support of earthquake relief efforts

Since Türkiye was struck by devastating earthquakes in February 2023, cargo-partner’s country and corporate management have been working side by side with non-profit organizations to support local relief activities. The logistics provider has sent numerous trucks with much-needed supplies to the worst-affected areas: from water, food, blankets and hygiene products up to container houses, emergency tents, generators and tools. In addition, the company collected a total of 200,000 euros, donated by employees and the management, which were used to help those affected by the earthquakes. Most recently, during Türkiye’s Sacrifice Feast in June, cargo-partner organized a truck shipment of foodstuffs, hygiene products and bottled water to support families in the province of Hatay in Southern Türkiye.

Ready for the New EU Import Checks?

As proposals for new UK border import checks have now been announced, logistics and worldwide transport specialist cargo-partner is reminding importers to get ready and be prepared.

New import checks for all goods coming into the UK have been expected since the Brexit trade deal. Now the UK Government has provided a draft Border Target Operating Model, setting out a new approach to importing into the UK that is expected to be progressively introduced from the end of October 2023.

cargo-partner can support customers to prepare for these new checks and ensure they have the best solution in place to support both their import and export requirements.

Neil Murray, Managing Director for cargo-partner UK, said: “cargo-partner offers a dedicated customs clearance service, as part of our comprehensive range of transport solutions. Our UK and Ireland teams are experienced in connecting shipments across the Irish Sea, across the English Channel and supporting customers with the movement of goods between Great Britain and the rest of Europe, so we’re always up-to-date on the latest customs checks. We offer comprehensive customs brokerage services, assisting our customers with documentation, duty management, and trade compliance. By partnering with cargo-partner, our clients can navigate the complexities of customs procedures with confidence.”

cargo-partner Sold to Nippon Express Group

As cargo-partner is celebrating its 40th anniversary, company owner and founder Stefan Krauter has decided to sell the Austrian global logistics firm to Japanese stock-listed Nippon Express Holdings, the parent company of Nippon Express, APC, Franco Vago and others. Having started operations in 1983 with only five employees at Vienna Airport and having developed the company almost completely organically to now 4000 employees in 40 countries around the globe, Krauter had already passed on the baton to his management and now has also passed over ownership to his ‘ideal successor’, NX.

After exceeding the billion euro mark in global turnover for the first time in 2020, cargo-partner’s turnover increased by 72%, reaching over 1.8 billion euro in 2021, and further increased to 2.06 billion euro in 2022.

“Leadership by agile founders bears some considerable advantages, but from a certain stage on, highly professional and long-term stable ownership is the bigger asset. It is the founders’ challenge and responsibility to decide about both management and ownership succession at the right time. Not too early to be able to build a stable internal management succession but, for sure, also not too late,” Krauter says. “That is why, together with the Corporate Executive Board, we started evaluating different options for the future of cargo-partner.”

Stefan Krauter continues to explain: “It would also have been a good option for the management and employees to continue going completely alone, but since the ideal new strategic owner was found in NX Group, we were ultimately convinced that this was the right way to go forward. Following the integration policy we have seen from NX Group so far, cargo-partner will remain cargo-partner in regard to both organization and branding – and it will become the strongest cargo-partner ever!”

The deal was signed on May 12, 2023 and will come into effect subject to the usual regulatory (anti-trust and FDI) approvals in an estimated four to seven months along with the subsequent closing.
“Both organizations will benefit from considerable synergies in global office coverage, an expanded service portfolio, strengthened regional, product and IT know-how, increased scale and others. NX Group will benefit from our strong and extensive network in Central and Eastern Europe that complements NX’s existing network in an ideal way, and cargo-partner will jump several leagues in the Intra-Asian and Trans-Pacific trade lanes,” Stefan Krauter states. He adds: “cargo-partner will also continue to work with its current global agents’ network, strive to expand this section of its business and support it in future with its upgraded platform which is presently under development.”

“I will personally continue to support the transition in my new role on the Corporate Supervisory Board and in my advisory function to the Corporate Executive Board. I will be focusing on smart partial integration with the new owners as well as on other matters regarding strategy, M&A and ESG. What an interesting and rewarding challenge at the end of my career!” Krauter says. The sellers have been advised by J.P. Morgan (financial), ValueAdd (financial), BCG (commercial), Schönherr (legal), and Deloitte (accounting and tax) on the transaction.

Today, the ideal warehouse is more than a space to store and ship goods – it performs additional functions that provide added value for our customers and accelerates the supply chain. Thanks to our strategic warehouse partners, we’re pleased to offer these enhanced warehousing solutions to our customers in the UK and Ireland and to the wider market, supporting both local and international businesses with all transport and storage needs.”

New LCL Services from Asia to Western Europe

Cargo-partner has once again expanded its range of LCL solutions (less than container load) and introduced new weekly sea freight consolidation services from China and India to Rotterdam, serving various destinations in Western Europe.

As ports and warehouses in Northern Europe are still facing heavy congestions and service issues, cargo-partner has recognized the need to provide more flexibility to its customers and expand its range of services in the region. To combat these challenges, the logistics provider has introduced new weekly LCL services from the key Asian gateways Shanghai, Shenzhen and Nhava Sheva to Western Europe via the port of Rotterdam. The new services allow for more flexible planning and considerable time savings compared to transit via German main ports.

“Many of our customers are currently facing cost pressure and looking for a reliable solution for their import shipments from Asia – especially for destinations in Western Europe, which are typically very competitive,” explains Felix Miletich, Corporate Director Product Management Sea Cargo LCL at cargo-partner. “With our LCL services via Rotterdam, we can provide a stable alternative to congested ports in Northern Europe and achieve synergies on the last mile for shipments from various origins.”

One of many cargo-partner-owned consolidation services

The service via Rotterdam is one of many sea freight consolidation services that are fully controlled by cargo-partner, ensuring high flexibility and minimal risk of damages for the logistics provider’s customers. cargo-partner’s door-to-door solutions include pre-and on-carriage by road, customs clearance and comprehensive logistics services through the company’s European warehouse network.

After deconsolidation at a dedicated warehouse in Rotterdam, customers benefit from fixed truck departures at least once per week for deliveries throughout Europe. While the service mainly targets Western European countries like Germany, Belgium, Sweden, the UK, Ireland and Spain, it can also provide an interesting alternative for customers in Central European destinations such as Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Strategic focus on LCL and Western Europe

As one of the leading providers of LCL transports in Central and Eastern Europe, cargo-partner operates its own weekly LCL consolidation lines from more than 20 Asian and East-Mediterranean countries to its Ljubljana hub. In addition, the company will also continue to service Germany with its “Adria Express” service connecting Asia to Europe via Koper, Rijeka and Trieste. Another well-established, cargo-partner-owned LCL consolidation service links China and Germany by rail, using Duisburg as a regional gateway for east- and westbound transport.

Looking ahead, the logistics provider has placed a strategic focus on strengthening its network in Western Europe, with the new LCL service via Rotterdam representing just one aspect of cargo-partner’s growing portfolio or air, sea, road transport and warehousing solutions in the region.

“We can provide full coverage across both nations, offering a variety of innovative logistics solutions – and with cargo-partner’s global network of over 160 offices in 40 countries, we can also provide customers with a gateway of further storage and transport connections across the world.”

Following Brexit and various trade policy changes, there are a number of processes customers need to follow when shipping across the Irish sea, but cargo-partner can help, advise and manage every element of the process, offering a range of tools to help businesses track the movement of their goods from end to end. As a full-range logistics provider, cargo-partner can also support customers with air, sea and rail transportation.
