From Heritage to High-Tech Forklifts

In an interview with Stefan Budweit, President and CEO of Clark Europe, Peter MacLeod detects the brand shifting strategically in a more high-tech direction.

As the global materials handling sector undergoes seismic shifts – driven primarily by sustainability mandates, technological innovation, and evolving customer demands – Clark Europe is on a mission not just to keep up but to leap ahead. At the helm of this ambitious transformation is Stefan Budweit, its President and CEO, whose three-decade career spans major names like Jungheinrich, Toyota, and now, Clark, having replaced Rolf Eiten on 1st January this year. In an exclusive interview with Logistics Business, Budweit discusses the brand’s growth strategy, product innovation, and how a century-old name is reinventing itself for the electric age.

Growth-Driven Challenger

Budweit’s career journey mirrors the evolution of the industry itself. Starting in parts sales with Jungheinrich before taking on international sales roles, and later leading global key accounts at Toyota, he’s no stranger to operating at scale. “The transition to Clark was a chance to build something new,” Budweit explains. “At Jungheinrich and Toyota, you’re maintaining a large ship. At Clark, we saw the opportunity to grow from a lower base with fresh thinking. We had nothing to lose – only ground to gain.”

Now, with his promotion to CEO, Budweit is tasked with steering the next chapter in Clark’s storied history. “Taking Clark from a global ranking of around 14 or 15 to a top-10 position, that’s a task that excites me.”

Clark’s strategy isn’t about chasing every trend or copying market leaders. Instead, it focuses on aligning its products with customer needs, especially those of its core base: small to mid-sized businesses with fleets of up to 20 units. These customers, often underserved by larger OEMs, are facing the same pressures to cut carbon emissions and improve efficiency as the major logistics players.

“The role of the forklift hasn’t fundamentally changed – it still moves pallets from A to B,” says Budweit. “But the environment in which it operates has. That’s where we see opportunity.”
One of Clark’s key growth initiatives lies in its newly-announced crossover models, electric trucks designed for outdoor use, previously a stronghold of internal combustion (IC) vehicles. These rugged, high-clearance trucks can handle conditions where diesel and gas once reigned supreme, such as mud, rain, and uneven ground.

“These crossover models meet customer needs for performance and sustainability,” Budweit notes. “And because many big players don’t yet offer a comparable product, we see a real chance to carve out market share.”

Sustainability with Substance

For Clark, sustainability is a sales imperative. Across Europe, emissions regulations are accelerating the decline of IC trucks. Meanwhile, companies of all sizes face growing pressure to report on their ESG metrics.

“Even smaller customers now need to reduce their carbon footprint and report it in their annual reviews,” Budweit says. “We’re helping by providing electric alternatives and also by offering transparency in our own production and logistics emissions. ESG is now a core part of our value proposition.”

This shift is most visible in Clark’s electrification strategy. While IC trucks remain important in less regulated markets like Africa and parts of the Middle East, in Europe, electric models dominate, particularly in warehousing where electric account for around 65% of the market.

To serve this demand, Clark offers both lithium-ion and lead-acid battery options across its electric range. “Flexibility is key,” Budweit says. “Many customers start with lead-acid and upgrade later. Our trucks are designed to accommodate both.”

Another sign of Clark’s transformation is in branding. Gone are the cryptic model names, and in come the bold new product lines Raider and Renegade introduced at LogiMAT.
“The names help us position products for specific markets,” Budweit explains. “Raider is the entry-level option, cost-effective and durable. Renegade is for more demanding applications, with advanced features and premium ergonomics.”

The differentiation also allows Clark to tailor offerings across regions. While Eastern Europe may favour budget-friendly models, Scandinavia expects high-end features and comfort. With centralised product groups now coordinating global development, Clark is better equipped than ever to deliver region-specific solutions.

Going Digital

As the forklift industry evolves beyond the mechanical into the digital, Clark is embracing the shift. Its new fleet management system – developed in-house rather than outsourced – is a response to changing customer profiles and the rise of larger fleet operators.

“In the past, our customers didn’t necessarily demand fleet management,” Budweit says. “But as our client base grows to include bigger operators, we’re providing smart solutions, factory-installed, and fully integrated.”

Looking ahead, Clark sees potential in leveraging AI for predictive maintenance and safety features, particularly in real-time hazard detection. “AI is already playing a role in fleet optimisation,” Budweit says. “We’re integrating these capabilities to meet the demands of a more sophisticated user base.”

The Brand Comes Home

Founded in 1917, Clark invented the modern forklift. Today, Budweit sees that legacy as both a differentiator and an asset. “In many countries, when people say ‘forklift,’ they still say ‘Clark,’” he notes. The company is tapping into that heritage with a symbolic move: on 10th April, it officially returned its global headquarters to Dallas, Texas. “Clark is coming home,” Budweit says with a smile. “We’re reopening our US manufacturing base and reconnecting with our American roots.”

From rugged electric crossover trucks to AI-enabled fleet solutions, Clark is reimagining itself for a future that demands sustainability, flexibility, and performance. And under Budweit’s leadership, the company is not just talking about transformation, it’s building it one truck and one customer at a time. “The sky is the limit,” he concludes. Clark has no pretences to become another Toyota or Jungheinrich – it’s cornering a healthy market where a heritage brand meets future-ready thinking.

Full Power for 48-volt Forklifts

Clark has expanded the S-Series Electric with new three- and four-wheel forklifts. The new STE and SE series with a load capacity of 1.6 to 2 tonnes and a maximum lift height of up to 7075 mm replaces the GTX and GEX series in the 48 volt segment. Like the S-Series Electric (SE25-35) with 80 volts and load capacities of 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes, the new three-wheel and four-wheel forklift trucks are also characterised by the attributes ‘smart, strong and safe’.

The STE16/18/20 and SE16/20 electric forklift trucks offers a combination of safety and high handling performance. Thanks to their compact design and impressive manoeuvrability, the electric forklift trucks are an ideal solution for indoor and outdoor use in industry and retail. The four-wheel forklift trucks with a steering angle of 101° (Zero Steer Turn Axle) prove their worth particularly in narrow aisles or space-critical work areas, as they can turn almost on the spot. All models in the new series are designed to ensure smooth internal logistics with maximum availability and efficiency, and are completely emission-free.

Smart – Flexible battery solution and maximum performance

With the new vehicles with lithium-ion battery (460 Ah and optional 280 Ah), the operator benefits from extremely short charging times and maximum productivity, as the maintenance-free Li-ion technology extends the battery service life, reduces operating costs and thus enables flexible multi-shift operation thanks to intermediate and fast charging capability. As with the S-Series Electric, the operator also has the option of changing the vehicle’s energy source and adapting the software accordingly in the event of changing application requirements without any major additional effort. The forklift trucks can be operated with the classic lead-acid battery with a maximum of 625 Ah and can also be switched back to the high-performance Clark lithium-ion battery if required. With this smart battery solution, the electric forklift trucks can be adapted to almost any application scenario.

The advanced 5-inch colour display with integrated reversing camera, active safety systems and extensive additional equipment not only ensure a high level of safety, but also the greatest possible efficiency in use. Special highlights include the nested mast profiles for excellent mast visibility, the service-friendly and robust design, intuitive direction change integrated into the hydraulic or mini levers and the electric parking brake, which prevents the vehicle from unintentionally accelerating or rolling backwards. The modern and well thought-out vehicle concept is rounded off by an ergonomic workplace with numerous storage options for documents, drinks and mobile phones.

Strong – Electric power for high handling performance

Two drive motors in the parallel front drive, each with an output of 4.4 kW and 48 V three-phase AC technology, ensure rapid acceleration and travelling speeds of up to 16 km/h. Three individually programmable driving modes are available for energy-efficient utilisation of the truck. Wear-free regenerative braking with the engine brake and automatic speed reduction when cornering can also be set as required.

As you would expect from Clark, the S-Series Electric is also designed according to the ‘Built to Last’ concept. This requires a solid construction with high-quality and durable components: In the S-Series Electric, this includes wet, maintenance-free multi-disc brakes, a durable and electronically protected gearbox, a robust, vibration-free steering axle for up to 50 per cent less effort when braking, lift masts from Clark’s own production with 6-roller fork carriage and lift mast damping, and the fully welded frames that are standard at Clark.

The maintenance-free multi-disc brakes with oil cooling, for example, also prove their worth on wet or dusty surfaces thanks to their powerful braking effect. The long maintenance intervals and low operating and maintenance costs should also be emphasised. In the event of maintenance, all relevant components are easily accessible for the service technician, minimising downtimes.

Safe – Intuitive and safe operation

In addition to high availability and performance, the STE/SE series also has a lot to offer the operator: The extremely spacious driver’s workplace with a generous footwell and plenty of leg and headroom ensures that operators can feel comfortable at work. A choice of adjustable comfort seats with air or mechanical suspension contribute to the high level of operator comfort. The tilt of the steering column can be individually adjusted to suit the operator. The pedals are automotive-compliant. The vehicle can be operated either via adjustable mini levers integrated into the armrest or via ergonomically arranged hydraulic levers on the vehicle bonnet. The intuitive switching of the direction of travel on the hydraulic or mini-lever takes the strain off the driver, as he does not have to reach round to switch.

The operator has a very good view to the front of the forks and the load to ensure a high level of safety when travelling straight ahead and when loading and unloading loads. This is ensured by a large viewing window and the nested mast profiles. The high-contrast, splash-proof 5-inch colour display provides information on all important vehicle parameters. Safety and warning messages are displayed in 26 languages. When using the optional SafeView HD all-round camera, the image is transmitted to an HD colour display so that the operator has a good overview of the activities on his route when reversing. The SafeView HD camera system is a fully digital HD camera with 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9) and three wide-angle cameras (left/rear/right) installed on the truck as well as a 10-inch touchscreen. The operator can choose between different views as required (bird’s eye view, split screen view and 3D view). This increases safety during use, as the operator always knows what is happening in his working environment in real time with a frame rate of 30 fps.

Further optional safety features are available to maximise safety. These include, for example, the load weight indicator, which measures the weight of the load on the forks and helps to prevent the truck from being overloaded. With the Vertical Mast System (VMS), which is also optional, a tilt sensor automatically brings the mast into a vertical position so that goods can be loaded and unloaded quickly and safely. The VMS positions the mast vertically both when tilting forwards and backwards and equalises the vehicle position on uneven floors or ramps. Safe use on sloping terrain or ramps is guaranteed by the automatically engaging electric parking brake. This prevents the truck from unintentionally accelerating or rolling backwards and ensures that the operator always has the vehicle under control.

Customised for the application

Clark offers extensive additional equipment and options for different applications for the three and four-wheel forklift trucks in the S-Series: Optional equipment includes various cabs, such as rain protection (steel roof), weather protection (steel roof and windscreen), partial (steel roof, front and rear windscreen and PVC side panelling) and full cabs, mini levers or mechanical levers, blue LED warning lights, orange seat belt, attachments and additional safety options.

Suitable Pallet Truck for every Application

Clark has expanded its range of electric pallet trucks with four new models for pedestrian operation. The new pallet trucks are from the WS and SWX series with load capacities from 1.2 to 1.6 tonnes. The compact and manoeuvrable pedestrian stackers are suitable for transporting goods over short distances, for use in space-critical aisles and for loading and unloading trucks. They ensure smooth logistics processes in industry, trade and logistics. Equipped with a stable four-point support, the high lift pallet trucks achieve high residual load capacities even at great lifting heights. With the new pedestrian pallet trucks or the pedestrian stackers with driver’s platform for longer distances, Clark now offers the right truck for almost every requirement.

Maximum efficiency and flexibility

For intuitive and fatigue-free operation of the vehicles, all operating elements are conveniently positioned in the ergonomic tiller and can be operated by both right- and left-handed operators. The operator has an optimum view of the forks on all appliances and can therefore store and retrieve loads quickly and safely in narrow aisles. Numerous safety features guarantee a high level of safety during operation: For high stability, for example, the travelling speed of the high lift pallet trucks is automatically reduced as soon as the load is lifted. The rounded vehicle contour minimises potential danger points, while the four-point support ensures maximum stability. The safety tiller is fitted to the bottom left of the vehicle on all models to ensure sufficient distance from the operator. A large safety switch on the drawbar provides additional protection during use. The SWX series is also equipped with a proportional hydraulic control. The standard proportional lift ensures precise lifting and lowering even of sensitive loads.

The high lift truck series are equipped with tried and tested controllers. This makes the vehicles extremely robust and easy to maintain. Should a malfunction nevertheless occur, the error code indicator on the display provides precise information on the cause, making diagnosis easier for the service technician. The one-piece bonnet allows easy access for service and maintenance work. The service technician can also easily programme the driving and lifting parameters via the vehicle display. Practical storage compartments ensure that the operator always has tools, documents and other important utensils to hand.

WS series: Professionals for light warehouse work

The WS series pallet trucks with a travelling speed of 4 km/h are designed for light and occasional use. The series consists of the WS12, WS12M and WS10Mi models and is suitable for anyone who wants to handle simple logistics tasks with ease. The compact vehicles have a small front-end dimension and are therefore agile and easy to manoeuvre. This is particularly advantageous in confined spaces. The appliances are supplied with a lead-acid battery (72 Ah) as standard. For high availability and low maintenance, Clark also offers the pallet trucks with an optional lithium-ion battery (100 Ah). The battery can be recharged at any 230-volt socket using the integrated charger.

The WS12 with a maximum load capacity of 1200 kg and a lifting height of up to 4100 mm can be used for a wide range of applications. The agile warehouse helper is designed for transporting goods over short distances and for light applications with higher storage locations. The vehicle also proves its worth as a mobile worktable, for example for preparing goods for despatch in an ergonomic posture or for storing components in the workshop area. The lifting height can be individually adjusted for this purpose. This series is supplied with a lead-acid battery as standard. A lithium-ion battery is also available as an option if high availability is important or if you want to avoid the maintenance effort of the lead-acid battery.

With a maximum load capacity of up to 1200 kg and a mono mast with a lifting height of 1950 mm, the WS12M is extremely versatile. Whether for light stacking tasks, as an ergonomic mobile worktable or for loading service vehicles, this all-rounder can be used flexibly according to requirements. The WS12M is ideal for transporting goods over short distances and for use in space-critical work areas. Its mono mast enables excellent visibility of the fork tips and safe and stable load handling.

The WS10Mi high lift pallet truck with initial lift and a load capacity of 1000 kg is also suitable for transporting goods over short distances and for light applications with higher storage locations. Thanks to the initial lift, the wheel arms can be raised by up to 120 mm. This increases the ground clearance of the pedestrian stacker so that it can be easily manoeuvred over thresholds, ramps and loading bridges, even when loaded.

The SWX series: flexible and powerful all-rounders

The high lift pallet trucks in the SWX series are also manoeuvrable and safe to operate. They ensure the smooth completion of transport tasks in the warehouse as well as the safe and efficient storage and retrieval of goods. The SWX series comprises the SXW12, SWX16 and SWX16i models. The high lift pallet trucks impress with their powerful and maintenance-free AC drive technology, which is supported by a 1.6 kW drive motor and a 4.5 kW lift motor. All models have a travel speed of 5.5 km/h and are characterised by high lifting and lowering speeds for maximum handling performance. Thanks to lithium-ion technology, the vehicles are extremely efficient and reliable and can be easily integrated into existing logistics processes. Practical features such as the intuitive, sensitive hydraulics, a USB charging port and an additional storage compartment for mobile phones support the operator in everyday warehouse operations.

The SWX12 electric pallet truck has a load capacity of 1200 kg and a maximum lifting height of 4800 mm and is perfect for storing and retrieving goods and for transporting goods. The truck is equipped with a Li-Ion battery as standard and is an excellent choice for intensive use and high availability requirements. The powerful 100 Ah Li-ion battery can be recharged effortlessly and without any loss of service life, so that the pallet truck is always ready for use.

The SWX16 high lift pallet truck has a load capacity of 1600 kg and reaches a maximum lifting height of 5500 mm. The vehicle has been developed for the more demanding daily transport tasks in the warehouse and for loading goods. The optional powerful 205 Ah Li-Ion battery can be easily recharged without any loss of service life, so that the pallet truck is always ready for use. An external charger with 24 V, 100 Ah is included in the scope of delivery. If availability is not a major factor, the truck is also available with a lead-acid battery with a battery capacity of 225 Ah.

The SWX16i high lift pallet truck with initial lift combines performance and versatility for efficient load handling in warehouse environments. The standard 205 Ah Li-ion battery guarantees a long operating time. As the wheel arms can be raised, the SWX16i overcomes uneven floors with ease. This makes it ideal for demanding working environments. The initial lift also allows two loads to be moved simultaneously in double-decker operation. This allows the picking process to be extended over two pallets, for example. This speeds up goods handling, as distances and travelling times are saved.
