Solar Panels on Refrigerated Trailers offer Benefits

Solar panels have been installed on 76 new refrigerated trailers of ECS, a leading European logistics supplier of intermodal transport and integrated supply chain services. The solar panels will contribute to ECS’ vision of Creating Sustainable and Reliable logistics significantly reducing the refrigeration units’ fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

“Thermo King ThermoLite™ solar panels provide a sustainable power management solution for reefer units, increasing the battery life while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions,” said Samer Hawat, area sales and service manager Belgium and Luxembourg at Thermo King.  “Equipped with solar panels, ECS’ refrigeration units will have a source of sustainable power on the road, which will increase the company’s operational efficiency, reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to the strategic sustainability goals.”

“As a Logistics service provider, ECS recognizes the environmental impact of our business and takes the responsibility to reduce this impact as much as possible. Focus and improvement in environmental sustainability has always been part of our daily operations and business decisions,” said Jonas Van Den Broucke, technical fleet manager at ECS. “Our relationship with Thermo King goes back over 20 years and they have always excelled in providing us with reliable, cost efficient products and experienced service. When they advised us to consider the solar panels for our refrigerated trailer fleet, we had to give it a try.”

Before committing, ECS performed a six months field test, monitoring four Thermo King refrigerated trailers with ThermoLite™ solar panels on four different routes across Europe. The Thermo King TracKing system allowed for remote tracking of battery charge levels and fuel consumption. ECS compared the results with the performance of four other units in their fleet, on similar routes but without the solar panel. The field trial proved that the installation of ThermoLite™ solar panels can allow ECS to save even 1 000 liters of fuel per year, on one trailer unit.

Following the test, ECS decided to install ThermoLite™ solar panels on their 76 new refrigerated trailers. ECS expects the solar panels to improve uptime of their new fleet and estimates to save 76 000 liters of diesel per year. ECS also calculated that the installation of the solar panels will reduce their CO2 emissions by 2 000 tons in 10 years.

ThermoLite solar panels ensure that the refrigeration unit’s battery remains continuously charged, extending the battery life and preventing its deterioration. By reducing the operation hours of the unit’s engine the solar panels also contribute to extending the maintenance intervals. Paired with telematics, they allow the fleet managers to be in constant contact with their trailers and access critical unit data at any time to ensure that the load is protected and the unit is running efficiently.

Thermo King ThermoLIte™ solar panels contribute to Trane Technologies 2030 sustainability aspirations, and the commitment to reduce customers’ carbon emissions by one gigaton – equivalent to the annual emissions of Italy, France and the United Kingdom combine

Thermo King launches Li-ion Battery for Refrigerated Transport

Thermo King has launched its new lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery for refrigerated transport. The battery pack is designed specifically for the E-200 fully-electric refrigeration units. Combined with the E-200 units, the battery pack creates a zero emissions transport refrigeration solution that ensures an unbroken cold chain even while the driver stops for delivery, break or needs to turn off the vehicle for longer.

“Product innovation, sustainability, reliability, increased uptime, total cost of ownership, optimal efficiency and customer expectations have always been the concepts that drive us,” said Eneko Fernandez, product management leader at Thermo King. “Electrification is a trend that’s set to continue with the refinement of units that don’t use a diesel engine to drive the compressor, and instead use a battery-based system. At Thermo King, we want to challenge what is possible in our industry, and today we are taking a step forward. We developed our own Li-ion battery pack for refrigerated transport to fully integrate it with the unit’s system and allow our customers to maximise the benefits of its smart and sustainable power management.”

The Thermo King battery pack was designed to seamlessly work with the E-200 fully electric, zero-emissions refrigeration units for medium sized vans and trucks – the latest addition to Thermo King’s growing portfolio of non-diesel solutions. Unlike typical small truck solutions designed for diesel combustion engines, the E-200 delivers constant capacity in up to two cooling zones, independently from the vehicles’ engines, and can work with both electric and engine-powered vehicles. The Thermo King battery works with the E-200 units’ patented power management, which contributes to lower energy consumption, increased vehicle autonomy and higher efficiency and reliability.

The battery combined with the E-200 unit ensures the hold-over capacity, an environmentally sustainable way to power the unit during stops for deliveries or breaks. This is particularly important during home delivery and other city distribution operations, with frequent deliveries and door openings, short driving distances and repeated stops in traffic. It gives the fleet managers the peace of mind that the transported goods are cooled at all times and there are no temperature deviations in the compartment. The solution is also compatible with vehicle’s start-stop features contributing to additional fuel savings.

New Mobile Refrigerated Containers with Autonomous Operation

New mobile refrigerated containers with autonomous operation has been launched by Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions. The ColdCube™ Connect Flex is the latest addition to its portfolio of flexible, portable cooling, freezing and heating mobile containers. The nmodels come with an integrated battery, which offers at least 12 hours of autonomous cooling capacity, fully independent from the vehicle battery.

The mobile refrigerated containers are a lightweight, durable, flexible solution available in three sizes that fit a standard van or truck. The containers allow customers to ensure an autonomous temperature controlled environment in non-refrigerated vehicles and fulfill a variety of transport and storage needs including Pharma, retail, catering and last mile deliveries. Bluetooth connectivity enables customers to wirelessly control the temperature set-point and provides full visibility of temperature and status without opening the container. For additional connectivity, ColdCube™ Connect FLEX comes with a preinstalled temperature sensor, compatible with Thermo King telematics systems.

“ColdCube™ containers provide a simple and flexible way to ensure that Pharma, fresh or catering temperature-sensitive products are moved and stored in the right, controlled environment,” said Oscar Sanz de Acedo Pollan, aftermarket engineering leader at Thermo King.” The new FLEX models, thanks to the integrated battery and autonomous operations, give customers even more flexibility. They can now store the container outside the vehicle whenever needed, without looking for an external power source to connect to.”

ColdCube™ Connect FLEX Pharma certified models offer powerful, automatic cooling, freezing and heating operation reaching temperature ranges from -30 degrees Celsius to +30 degrees Celsius depending on the version, and efficient internal ventilation. This meets the stringent requirements for secure transport of biomedical products, like blood bags, blood tubes, vaccines and biological samples in the most demanding environment conditions.
