Biscuit Manufacturer gets Double Deck Trailers

A fleet introduction debut that was four years in the baking, Fox’s Burton’s Companies (FBC) UK Limited has welcomed the first Tiger Trailers-manufactured vehicles to its fleet in the form of nineteen moving deck double decks and two single deck box vans, boasting mouth-watering full-wrap Maryland Cookies, Jammie Dodgers, and Party Rings liveries.

The biscuit manufacturer’s new double decks are powered by Tiger’s own four-ram hydraulic lifting system and have been designed and engineered in a wedge iteration to enable them to transport a capacity of fifty-two UK pallets. This maximises utilisation efficiency and reduces both carbon dioxide emissions and fuel spend.

Danny Hobkirk, Fleet Transport Operations Manager for Fox’s Burton’s Companies, says: “Everyone from across our business is excited to see these first Tiger trailers join our fleet. They look stunning with some of the nation’s most-loved biscuit brands on them. Tom and Tiger colleagues have visited our sites on many occasions throughout this project’s development, during which time we have utilised a number of double decks from Tiger Rentals and also visited Tiger’s site for 3D reviews, all giving us full confidence in the new vehicles’ ability to fulfil our requirements.”

Safety for its operatives and also other road users was at the forefront of the delivered specification for the customer’s new articulated trailers, which incorporate the Safe Parking systems from both Haldex and Maple, along with a ground-level sliding coupling, upgraded tow-guard with an over-centre locking handle to protect against finger injuries, a wanderlead for remote deck operation, Anchorlock to mitigate trailer runaways, and a wide range of additional lighting both externally and internally. A flashing warning lamp to warn cyclists of the trailers’ danger zones and to inform them when the vehicle is turning left has also been fitted.

Thomas Stott, Key Account Manager at Tiger Trailers, remarks: “It’s been a pleasure collaborating closely with the Logistics team from FBC while working on these exciting new trailers. Our businesses share a desire for high quality, and it’s great to see a customer taking safety so seriously as seen in the specification of their new trailers. It’s great each time we see one of FBC’s new Tiger trailers out there delivering confectionaries everyone is familiar with, and we look forward to continuing to support their operations over the coming months and years”.

The treat-maker’s new Tiger trailers will operate out of FBC’s sites in Batley, West Yorkshire, and Kirkham in Lancashire, delivering its iconic biscuits throughout the UK.

Parcel Handling Specialist adds Trailers to Fleet

Five years since they commissioned Tiger Trailers to build 17 double deck trailers, The Delivery Group team approached Tiger in April of 2024 to produce their second-generation trailers, custom designed to match their evolving delivery operation. The order comprised 10 curtainsiders with tuckaway tail-lifts, and 10 moving double deck box vans.

Responsible for both short-haul regional drops and nationwide trunking of both caged and palletised goods, durability and usability were at the forefront of The Delivery Group’s requirements. Chosen for their attention to detail and ability to deliver a bespoke solution, Tiger worked closely with The Delivery Group during pre-build visits and production, to incorporate optimum features and technology.

Martin Johnson, Operations Director at The Delivery Group comments: “Our bespoke operation requires flexibility, strength and reliability to meet the needs of our operation and clients. This latest purchase from Tiger since we took the initial Tiger trailers back in 2014, allowed us to design and build a new trailer type that caters for, and suits our operational needs perfectly with the help of the Tiger Team. Partnerships are key to our operational success, and the collaborative approach from Tiger challenged our ideas whilst engaging their design skills to define how best to achieve our objectives. The result is a trailer that ‘ticks every box’ on our wish list and looks great.”

To maximise capacity and varying load weights, a reinforced rear frame, sides, and 12-tonne moving deck were chosen, with a false bulkhead fitted near the front of the deck to allow partial loading of the moving deck. Enhanced visual aids and electronically controlled hydraulic safety locks, as well as an override on the motor pump mechanism, mean that users are made aware of any load errors long before the vehicle makes it to transit.

Sales Director at Tiger Trailers, Darren Holland says: “It has been a pleasure to work closely with the team from The Delivery Group again. Developing their new trailers’ needs in line with the way that their businesses and logistics have evolved is fantastic and the new trailers look amazing.” The Delivery Group also opted for a 60-month service and maintenance package direct from Tiger, backed by nationwide breakdown provision.

Irish Transporter Renews Trailers

Noone Transport, based in Co. Meath, Ireland, is undergoing a period of significant investment as it opens up new routes throughout Ireland, the UK and continental Europe.

Established in 1986 and now one of Ireland’s leading transport and logistics operators, Noone Transport provides an extensive range of transport and warehousing services to numerous industry sectors, including food, retail, autoparts and pharmaceutical.

A mixture of 50 Krone curtainsiders and temperature-controlled trailers will enter Noone‘s vehicle fleet over the coming months, most of which will operate from the company’s newly-built warehouse and distribution facility, 20 minutes from Dublin port.

“As a leading warehousing and logistics provider, we have expanded our capabilities with our newly constructed warehouse,” says director, Daniel Noone. “With 80,000 sq ft and 24,000 pallet capacity, we can efficiently handle distribution, order fulfilment, cross-docking and stock management for part and full loads. Plus, our prime location just off the M2 puts us in close proximity to ports and airports.”

The new trailer equipment comprises 20 Profi Liners and 30 Cool Liners. The curtainsiders come with Krone’s award-winning Multi Lock loading system, which features strapping points every 10cms along each side rave, for multiple strapping options and secure loading. The high-impact phenolic floor, allows for fork loading up to 7 tonnes and for fast top-loading, each is fitted with an Edscha sliding roof.

The Cool Liners are a mixture of Duplex steel, single and double-deckers, some with multi-temperature control. While in transit, each load benefits from KSC ProPlus Cool – the latest telematics system from Krone, which automatically monitors inside temperatures, coupling status, brake condition, door openings, fuel level, trailer location and tyre pressures.

“With the new tyre monitoring regulations coming into force in July 2024,” says Noone, “whereby all new trailers must be fitted with a TPMS, the Krone system will prove vital. Aside from the regulations, it’s a good additional safety measure and will undoubtedly help to avoid excessive wear and potential tyre failure – both of which ad up to downtime and additional cost.”

In addition, ProPlus Cool handles complete document management via WLAN, which enables the traffic office to connect to the Krone Telematics Box via WLAN to access and retrieve all relevant data. Manufactured by Krone in Germany the Cool Liners’ body strength lies mainly in the Duoplex Steel outer skins and heavy-duty aluminium floor. Plus, for extra rigidity, the chassis is constructed using double -T, longitudinal beams and a Z-profile rear traverse section with diagonal reinforcements.

The rear doors are of high-security ‘container-type‘ design, while the loading security certificate complies with European standard, EN 12642 Code XL. Factors which Noone says are important to ensure reliability and low cost of ownership.

“We are delighted to once again be returning to Krone during this new growth phase,“ says Noone. “Krone knows the product inside out and match the trailer specifications to our operational needs. Their efficient service and dependable parts supply enable us to provide an exceptionally reliable service for our customers. We bought our first Krone in 2008, and the build quality continues to be of the highest standard.”

Noone Transport operates a fleet of 50 Mercedes Actros 18/45 tractor units along with a 100-strong trailer fleet including fridges, box vans and curtainsiders, with options to multiple destinations including the UK, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

Cost-Effective Lorry Curtains for Clean Lines

The UK’s largest suppliers of lorry tension curtains have launched the Adaico Ada-Slider for commercial vehicle operators looking for a cost-effective sliding curtain for easy access and vibrant graphics. The Adaico system features a reinforced sliding curtain, secured at either end with a single tensioning lock to provide a smooth surface for branding and designs.

Paul Reeve, Managing Director of Structure-flex, said, “As the Ada-Slider has had limited availability in the UK, we’re glad to be making it widely available to hauliers and fleet operators. And with our Sales Manager’s in-depth experience with the system, we know it delivers great value and durability.”

The Ada-Slider system is manufactured in Spain by Adaico and has won fans across Europe for its lower overall cost than comparable systems. The Ada Slider is available for heights up to 2.4m and lengths between 3.5m and 7m. Weighing less than many curtain systems, a single door lock at each end provides easy access and a smooth tensioned surface for vehicle graphics. The system also achieves the EN 12642-XL standard for load containment within commercial vehicles and trailers.

Despite being a new addition to Structure-flex’s range, their Area Sales Manager Blaine Durno, appointed in early 2020, has extensive experience with the product from a previous role. Blaine states, “the beauty of the Ada Slider is it’s simplicity. It is easy to open, close and secure with a single latch. Using our print technology, we can create highly impactful graphics that stay vibrant for longer.” Norfolk-based Structure-flex have provided lorry tension curtains since 1970 and the Ada-Sider is intended to complement their existing range which includes their innovative Smoothside buckle-free curtain.

Structure-flex’s operation are one of the largest and most capable in the UK, with the firm recently announcing a supply contract to Eddie Stobart Logistics. Investment in the latest ink technology has increased the intricacy of designs they can print onto tension curtains and ensures colours remain stronger for longer than ever before.

Blaine concludes, “Lorry curtains are more effective than ever as a place to build brand recognition and boost sales. Using reinforced PVC, high-frequency welding and the latest inks technology we can make any vehicle stand out on UK and European roads.” Previously available through a single UK supplier, Structure-flex were keen to stock the Adaico system and Blaine and his colleagues have already completed orders for individual vehicles and entire fleets.

Curtainsider Trailers Investment by Haulier

Logistics and supply chain management business, Woodside Haulage, has acquired 20 new fixed roof Schmitz Cargobull curtainsiders to transport goods between the UK and Ireland after being impressed with the quality of the trailers.

The new assets join an existing fleet of 20 Schmitz Cargobull curtainsiders, used to transport a variety of goods including retail, FMCG, construction, packaging and recycling to manufacturers, retailers and industry. Managing Director of Woodside Haulage, Mark Woodside, says: “We ship goods on ferries and our trailers are worked rigorously and extensively on an intensive schedule, so we need absolute confidence they are of the highest quality. The Schmitz Cargobull build quality really is second to none. The fully galvanised chassis gives full protection against corrosion and we know they will maintain a good cosmetic appearance throughout their entire life. We have trailers that remain in service for up to 15 years and we are confident this will be the case with these latest additions.”

Schmitz Cargobull’s high-tech modular chassis is a mix of galvanised steel and aluminium and comes with a 10-year warranty against rust-through. Each trailer is also specified with additional lighting and reversing sensors. “Safety is another key factor for us, and we’ve added extra lighting and sensors to the trailers to make sure we are maximising driver welfare and load security during transit,” adds Woodside. “For us, the fact that all Schmitz Cargobull products go through rigorous testing gives us assurance that the assets are of the highest quality and safety standards.”
