15 Electric Renault Trucks in Operation

Renault Trucks and Dachser are cooperating on the gradual decarbonization of road freight transport. In total, the logistics service provider is expanding its fleet by fifteen Renault Trucks vehicles. The all-electric trucks complete local and long-distance transport tours at seven Dachser locations in Germany every weekday.

Five Renault Trucks E-Tech D are already in use for Dachser. Seven more vehicles of this type and three Renault Trucks E-Tech T tractors are now being delivered. The latter are used at Dachser in Öhringen, Neuss and Langenhagen.

“We are convinced that in the long term, only those companies that position themselves sustainably will have a future,” says Alexander Tonn, COO Road Logistics at Dachser. “We therefore want to make a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection and be a driving force for the logistics industry with measures on many levels. Bringing emission-free vehicles into practical use plays an important role in this. With Renault Trucks, we have a reliable partner with whom we can embark on what is still a long journey to decarbonise our road transports.”

As part of its sustainability and climate protection strategy, the logistics service provider Dachser is preparing for the gradual transformation towards zero-emission vehicles and the corresponding charging infrastructure. Since January 1, 2022, the company has been sourcing its electricity entirely from renewable energies worldwide. Dachser wants to steadily increase the number of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and FCEVs (hydrogen-powered) trucks in both the local and long-distance transport networks, depending on performance, charging infrastructure and cost-effectiveness.

“At Renault Trucks, we are aware that we can only implement a long-term climate protection strategy together,” says Frederic Ruesche. “I am all the more pleased that we are working with Dachser to drive forward the reduction of CO2 emissions in the short- and long-haul segments.”

Renault Trucks claims to be the first and only manufacturer to offer its entire range as all-electric trucks. From the 2.8-tonne light commercial vehicle (LCV) to the 44-tonne truck for long-haul transport, every segment can be operated electrically. In addition, Renault Trucks also claim to be the first manufacturer to convert diesel vehicles into electric trucks in the spirit of the circular economy.

German Chemical Logistics Partnership

The German Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie e.V., or VCI) and DACHSER Chem Logistics have extended their purchasing partnership in logistics ahead of time by five years. Johann-Peter Nickel, Executive Director at VCI, and Michael Kriegel, Department Head DACHSER Chem Logistics, signed the agreement at Dachser’s Head Office in Kempten.

VCI and Dachser established their purchasing partnership for European groupage logistics back in 2009. As the chemical industry became more and more international, in 2015 the partnership was expanded to include air and sea freight transports. With some 1,900 member companies employing a total of almost 550,000 people in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry and related economic sectors, VCI one of the Germany’s three largest industry associations.

“Dachser is a competent partner for our member companies, one that can handle their European logistics safely with uniform quality standards using its own network while also supplying the intercontinental markets from a single source,” Nickel says in describing the long-standing partnership. Gisa Omlor, who is in charge of the purchasing partnership at VCI, adds: “With some sensitive products and numerous special legal regulations, the chemical industry is very demanding, especially when it comes to logistics. Having a long-standing partner that has the requisite expertise and commitment as well as the ability to communicate with German SMEs as an equal provides crucial added value and a competitive edge.”

Strong partners

The energy crisis and the current state of the global economy present the chemical industry with enormous challenges, particularly in Germany. “That’s why our members need a reliable logistics partner capable of ensuring a secure, resilient supply chain—now more than ever,” Nickel says. Both the logistics provider and the association believe their partnership has a bright future. “We greatly appreciate that VCI acknowledges our commitment to logistics for the chemical industry,” Kriegel says with regard to the early five-year extension of the contract. “DACHSER Chem Logistics is a specialized industry solution that offers all the benefits of Dachser’s global logistics network combined with a central pool of expertise specific to chemical logistics. We speak the chemical industry’s language. By investing in the expansion of our network, in digital innovations, and in climate protection, we’re also ideally placed to tackle the challenges of the future.”

Expertise across the board

In 2022, Dachser transported around four million shipments containing chemical products; 1.18 million of those shipments contained dangerous goods. Dachser dovetails the network’s standardized core groupage services—transport, contract logistics, and IT support systems—with service modules tailored to the chemical industry. The logistics provider underpins its dangerous goods expertise with its central dangerous goods management teams for overland transport and air and sea freight, plus some 250 regional dangerous goods safety advisers in its operational branches. Dachser has 23 branches in seven countries ready to handle the storage of hazardous materials. A total of 29 European branches have been evaluated for Safety and Quality Assessment for Sustainability (SQAS) certification by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC). This means that Dachser is ideally placed to continue offering its customers in the chemical industry top-quality logistics services in the future.

Export Consolidation to South Africa Offered

Growth in Dachser UK’s Air & Sea Logistics (ASL) activities continues apace with the introduction of regular consolidated freight services on the export trade to South African destinations.

With weekly departures to Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth the service is designed to help optimize customers’ supply chains. Dachser ASL provides the opportunity to ship smaller, less-than-containerload (LCL) shipments on a frequent basis without the necessity of delaying supplies until a larger quantity of goods are available to fill a container. Dachser’s reputation for quality and reliability, supported by its well-established IT tracking system, enhances shippers’ visibility and control.

“Supply chain disruption in the post-pandemic international trade environment has driven a need by shippers to often react more quickly to market demand with smaller quantities of goods to be delivered seamlessly,” said Chris Radley, Air & Sea Branch Manager at Dachser Northampton. “Our consolidated, or LCL services are tailored to fulfil this developing need and the new UK to South Africa offering is already proving popular.”

The recently inaugurated Dachser export consolidation service features vessel departures with preferred ocean carrier partners from London Gateway with transit times to the South African ports of between 26 and 30 days. All handling services including customs clearance are reliably provided by experienced, dedicated Dachser teams in both the UK and South Africa. Local hubs and CFS stations convenient to both shippers and consignees are utilised and hazardous goods are also catered for.

“Dachser’s well-established and much vaunted track and trace platform is available to monitor all shipments,” emphasises Radley. “Our eLogistics platform delivers peace of mind to our customers throughout the UK and South Africa, whether they are shipping freight throughout Europe or around the world. Our own network of offices enables a degree of reassurance and reliability which now extends to UK exporters of groupage cargo to South Africa,” he concludes.

Dachser, a family-owned company headquartered in Kempten, Germany, provides transport logistics, warehousing, and customized services in two business fields: Dachser Air & Sea Logistics and Dachser Road Logistics. The latter is divided into two business lines, Dachser European Logistics and Dachser Food Logistics. Comprehensive contract logistics services and industry-specific solutions round out the company’s offerings. A seamless shipping network—both in Europe and overseas—and fully integrated IT systems provide for intelligent logistics solutions worldwide.
