Wireless Charging System Keeps Production Flowing

In the fast-paced world of mass manufacturing, delays compromise productivity. Eradicating their causes – whether through malfunction or maintenance – is key to ensuring uptime, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) play an essential role in today’s modern manufacturing environment. Whether they are moving partially completed goods through different stages of production, transporting materials or components from storage to production lines or between workstations, their role underpins the efficient flow of goods throughout the manufacturing process. Given AGV’s role in the workflow, any downtime they experience can have serious consequences.

Carrybots takes the weight off conveyors

One AGV manufacturer that has been helping companies easily and cost-efficiently achieve transport automation, is Carrybots GmbH. Founded in 2021, its popular mobile robots for in-house logistics – including HERBIE – stand out for their high levels of modularity, flexibility and the modern control software incorporated into its products. It is recognised that the consolidation of load carriers – especially when the return of empty containers is required – poses significant challenges for manufacturers of conveyor technology. Recently, Carrybots responded to a request from a large tea manufacturer that had a requirement for a HERBIE with a faster, more convenient method for charging. Carrybots weighed up the pros and cons of battery swapping versus automatic charging, and concluded that battery swapping takes more time, while in process charging could be realised through a wireless solution. The latter option brings many advantages in a production or in-house logistics environment, ranging from improved safety, faster charging times and easier implementation. It also negates the need for additional storage space to house batteries while they are charging.

Wireless charging for all environments

With the preferred charging method established, the tea manufacturer then identified certain requirements that the wireless charging solution had to fulfil. It had to offer minimal to no maintenance and be high quality. Due to the nature of the manufacturing environment, it also had to be suitable for harsh environments (especially dusty ones) and have no open contacts. It needed to offer CAN communication, be compact on the AGV while also being easy to integrate into the facilities. With those requirements established, Carrybots’ next step was to identify the manufacturer best able to meet the customers’ wireless charging needs.

Furthermore, MOOVair guarantees reliability in dusty environments. The other charging alternatives that Carrybot considered used IR-communication – which, when covered by dust, could cause communication issues – and were ruled out on safety and reliability grounds.

The 30 kW Wireless Charging System, built on technology developed by WiTricity® and licensed by Delta, is composed of a primary unit, which is connected to the AC supply, and an onboard unit for forklift battery connection. The system allows automatic wireless charging over a gap of up to 150 mm for various batteries, sparing connector wear and maintenance costs. It has a wallplug-to-battery efficiency of up to 95%, better than traditional wired charging. The 30 kW Wireless Charging System also features CANopen® control interface for real-time communication with equipment and can connect to Ethernet for warehouse management system integration to achieve automatic and 24/7 operation for e-forklift equipment manufacturers.

Precise 3D Machine Vision for Smart Applications

Delta, provider of power management and industrial automation solutions, has launched a high-speed DMV-T time of flight (ToF) 3D machine vision smart camera at this year’s Hannover Messe. Not only does the 3D camera offer a high capture speed of up to 60 frames per second, large scanning distance up to 6 meters, also it is the first software-defined 3D ToF camera in the market. With a powerful built-in processor and as well as sophisticated DIAVision software platform, allows the system integrator to develop their algorithm in the DMV-T, to create their own smart applications. It’s ideal for logistics warehouse automation industries.

Hardware-software integration to fulfil SMART applications

The DMV-T employs an ARM Dual Cortex-A53 CPU as well as FPGA enabling the camera to accomplish the 3D vision process from image capture to output. It inspects large items with its built-in image-stitching algorithm without the need for an industrial PC. Besides, with the intelligence inside, another highlight of the DMV-T is the combination of its vision platform software, DIAVision. Offering an intuitive and convenient interface, users have an easy-to-use application-specific solution with a vision application repository open to third-party partners. Moreover, integrators and operators can create applications that run on the camera itself, reducing the components that need to be installed inside other equipment and saving space. Furthermore, the DMV-T with DIAVision can connect to the Delta Service DIACloud and support web browsers for anywhere, anytime data access.

FAST detection and deployment to optimize measurement

The Delta DMV-T ToF camera incorporates a Sony IMX image sensor that operates in conjunction with a powerful built-in processor to offer 640×480 pixel resolution and 60 frames per second capture speed with owned ISP compensation allowing for high accuracy. The camera uses in advanced robotics applications that require object position & status feedback such as pick-and-place, shelf position calibration as well as object dimension measurement. And its detection time is shorter than the leading products in the same conditions. The camera rapidly measures depth by calculating phase differences between the carrier frequency of the active light it emits and the reflected light coming back from the object. This makes the interoperability between multiple mobile robotics in the field. In addition, with the APP on both DIAVision and DIACloud that help user to deploy the APP to multiple DMV-T simultaneously.

The DMV-T with IP67 ingress protection that ensures the operability in harsh environment, moreover, with specific industrial certificated that avoid the environmental and radiation effect between multiple mobile robotics (e.g. AMR/AGV).

Ideal solution for the warehouse and logistics industries

With high specifications of sensor, processor, and processing capability, machine makers as well as system integrators for logistics and warehouse management can rely on the DMV-T for a variety of applications. For instance, the DMV-T can also be part of the li-ion battery warehousing system. By mounting at the front of the forklift, the DMV-T can help detect shelf positions and adjust fork angles in accordance with shelves that are crooked due to battery weights.
