BEUMER Group: stronger together at bauma

bauma is the world’s foremost meeting point for the construction, building materials and mining machinery industry – and the BEUMER Group will present its extensive product portfolio to visitors in Hall B2 at Booth 413 from October 24-30 in Munich.

Since May of this year, the full-service provider has been offering its entire product spectrum, ranging from bulk material handling, and processing plants to conveyor technology. Customers are provided with complete material transport solutions from a single source. The BEUMER Group has been firmly anchored in the bulk solids handling technology market for decades.

The acquisition of the FAM Group in May significantly strengthened the system provider’s position in the minerals and mining markets. The FAM Group has its headquarters in Magdeburg, Germany. It is an internationally active, medium-sized group and a manufacturer of systems for opencast mining, stockyards, mineral processing, ports, conveying and loading.

As one of the leading suppliers, the BEUMER Group offers machines along the entire transport chain for bulk goods. Efficient solutions, including the extraction, conveying, loading, storage and processing of various raw materials, are developed and implemented for various industries. The BEUMER Group combines many years of serial production know-how with customized manufacturing experience, offering high-quality engineering and extensive services. The Group’s employees are highly skilled in loading systems, opencast mining, storage, processing, conveying, and port technologies.

The BEUMER Group delivers turnkey complexes for the extraction, transport, and processing of raw materials, thanks to its wide range of large-scale equipment and individual machines for opencast mining, such as bucket wheel excavators, belt wagons and conveyor systems. Mine operators can transport various bulk materials with BEUMER’s pipe and overland conveyors, even over long distances and above terrain which is often rough and impassable.

Steep gradients and tight curve radii enable individual routes to be adapted to the topography and the task at hand. The BEUMER Group can customize the systems to match the conveying task and topography exactly. The system provider relies on modern planning and layout tools to support plant operators early in the project and design the ideal conveying solution together with the customer.

Sand and gravel, clay and limestone, gypsum, building site rubble – the reference list of the BEUMER Group’s materials is extensive. From a technical standpoint, the systems are always at the heart of production. The product portfolio includes extensive storage space technology, loading systems and various crushing & screening plants, including impact, hammer, single & double-roll crushers, plus many more crushers and mills.

Cement works rely on the BEUMER Group’s conveying solutions to move limestone over long distances from the quarry to the plant, making operations more sustainable and reducing the plant’s ecological footprint. The product range includes continuous ship unloaders with bucket elevators, mobile ship loading systems and stationery & movable ship loaders. The BEUMER portfolio also provides storage space technology for ports, enabling them to handle many types of bulk goods.  Loading heads ensure fast and dust-free loading of bulk goods into silo vehicles or rail cars.

The Group also offers loading and unloading systems for bags, enabling rail cars and ships to be dealt with quickly and safely. The BEUMER autopac automatically loads cement-filled bags onto truck beds, gently and in the desired packing pattern. The Group also offers complete high-performance packaging lines for bagged bulk goods, ranging from filling and palletizing lines to stretch hood packaging.

Paper E-Wrap on show in Japan

Japan is a country with many different facets and passions, but it is also one of the world’s birthplaces of e-commerce, with a mature market and well-defined trends. Japanese consumers know their mind: they prefer to have a large selection of goods, fast and accurate deliveries and, lastly, high quality packaging.

Sitma believes it can provide a tangible solution to these needs. This is why, at the end of summer 2022, it will be at Logis Tech Tokyo: a worthy conclusion to a very busy trade fair season. Sitma already took part in the Japanese trade fair in the past, though for the first time it will now display a machine in an operational configuration: the E-Wrap in the paper packaging version.

On the one hand, the September event confirms Sitma’s support for in-person trade fairs and, on the other hand its commitment to the Japanese market. It already operates in it through its Tokyo branch, which has been the focal point of its business strategies for over 30 years. It could not have been otherwise, since this area is a reference for the whole of the Far East, especially for the world of e-commerce logistics, which has undergone substantial growth in recent years.

Indeed, the value of the Japanese market has more than doubled in less than 10 years, going from ¥8.46 trillion in 2011 to ¥19.28 trillion in 2020 (over US$140 billion). It is now the fourth-largest market in the world after the United States, China and the UK. Apart from its economic value, the Japanese e-commerce market is one of the most crowded and challenging: indeed there are thousands of companies involved in the processes of buying, selling, sorting and delivering goods.

There is a widespread supply chain that works to support a very broad selection of products, ranging from interior design items to electronic devices, with differentiated purchases according to gender and age. However, data relating to purchasing habits is somewhat surprising. For example, unlike other areas of the world the demand for books is one of the predominant items and applies to both women and men (with 58% of the former resorting to online purchases and 55% of the latter).

Then come electronic devices, which are mainly purchased by men: 61% do so online, investing an average of ¥1,200 per month. In third place come fashion and clothing, which are instead mostly chosen by women: 70% of them order them online, investing around ¥1,000 every month. Such a demand for products significantly increases the level of skills required of companies working to support sorting and delivery hubs, both in terms of technology and the ability to generate efficiency.

In short, the challenge is huge. Along with the presence of numerous operators and the extensive supply of goods, the specific logic governing the market must be considered as well. Japanese society is indeed permeated by an ethical and working culture that minimises downtime. People’s lives are often organised according to “just-in-time” principles and the Japanese expect the same precision when placing orders online: a factor that further raises the bar of competition.

On a technological level, this means not only being able to have fast and high-performance machines but, for example, equally efficient weighing and tracking systems that work in sync with software packages to manage big data.

Paper E-Wrap: Western style and oriental spirit

Why did Sitma choose to take the E-Wrap to Logis Tech Tokyo? Because it is easy to use, though it brings huge benefits in terms of packaging speed, precision and quality of work. Plus, Japan is a rich country with consumers who, as in the most developed markets, are particularly attentive to the latest sustainability trends.

Sitma says the Paper E-Wrap is a perfectly tailored solution for the market from this point of view too, as it is a machine with a strong focus on sustainability. Indeed, it can pack according to an approach that takes into account the three dimensions of the object, following its volumes and limiting the use of wrapping material. The packaging also takes place by using heat-sealable paper, a material that ensures a very low environmental impact.

There is one last aspect that makes the Paper E-Wrap a winner: as mentioned, the Japanese market is largely based on the purchase and sale of small or medium-sized objects such as books, technological devices, video games and clothes. All these objects can be effectively packaged by means of heat-sealable paper, allowing for tailor-made packages that can withstand a weight of up to 2kg. These characteristics have already decreed the success of the Paper E-Wrap at European trade fairs Ipack-IMA and LogiMAT. The E-Wrap is now ready to conquer Japan as well.

Sitma will be at the next edition of Logis Tech Tokyo at stand 102 – Hall 3 from 13 to 16 September 2022.

“With the new format, we want to bring together urban planners, technology providers, food retailers and delivery services with logistics industry players, mayors and local politicians. Because only with intelligent, innovative and socially accepted solutions will we be able to create the growing demand for inner-city logistics and move toward climate neutrality,” says Mindel.

Presentation of prestigious industry awards at IAA TRANSPORTATION Prizes will also be awarded at IAA TRANSPORTATION in various branches of the mobility industry. The winners of the prestigious “Bus of the Year”, “Coach of the Year” and, for the first time, “Cargo Bike of the Year” competitions will be presented and honoured.

“We are in good talks with “Truck of Year”,” Trailer Innovation Award” and the “Van of the Year” and I am optimistic that in 2022 we will be able to present all of these awards in Hannover and thus give them the greatest possible attention. We are particularly pleased to welcome the “Cargo Bike of the Year” to the IAA. This clearly shows how multi-layered our portfolio is,” says Jürgen Mindel.

Ferag on show at UK exhibition

Ferag, a global leader in advanced conveying and sortation solutions, is to display its Swiss engineered overhead pouch and sorter systems at one of the UKs most important retail technology events, Retail Supply Chain & Logistics Expo 2022, 2nd – 3rd March, ExCel, London (Stand SC2460).

Visitors to the Ferag stand will be able to see technology developed for some of the most testing of handling applications, the international print industry, where high-speed overhead conveyors are required to offer ultra-reliable performance on daily newspaper production runs in the millions. The same materials, technology and design expertise has been successfully applied by Ferag across the intralogistics sector, bringing reliable, high-performance conveying at speeds of up to 12,000 units per hour to retail, ecommerce, automotive and general merchandise businesses.

Darcy de Thierry, Managing Director, Ferag UK Ltd, says: “Ecommerce fulfilment is a time-critical operation demanding ultra-reliable, high-performance automation. Downtime or mechanical failure can cause huge disruption, with delays to customer orders resulting in disappointment and refunds. But more importantly, these service failures can bring significant brand damage and the loss of repeat sales. We’re here in the UK to deliver ultra-reliable performance across our extensive range of sorters and conveyors – technology that we are keen to show to UK retailers.”

Principle products in Ferag’s extensive range of innovative sorters and conveyors include:

  • Skyfall, an overhead pouch system that combines conveying, buffering, sorting and consolidating, suited to a wide variety of goods weighing up to 20kg. The solution makes efficient use of available overhead space;

Ferag has installed intelligent conveyor and sortation systems for some of the world’s largest brands, such as: DHL, Auchan, Nestle, Zeiss, Cewe, Zalando, Mayoral, Viapost, Peerless Clothing International, Dumoulin, AstraZeneca, Stage, VW, Shoebox, along with many more.

IMHX reveals Sustainability Zone

A ground-breaking Sustainability Zone will be one of the major highlights at this year’s International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX 2022), when the UK logistics industry’s flagship event returns to the NEC, Birmingham, this September.

Brand new for 2022, the IMHX Sustainability Zone will combine physical displays, augmented reality, and virtual reality demonstrations to give visitors a ‘deep dive’ into the many steps that companies operating in the supply chain space can take to make sure they perform as sustainably as possible.

Prominently located within the main IMHX exhibition hall, the Sustainability Zone, which is being delivered in partnership with SEC Storage, will be set across 300 sq m and will allow visitors to take away everything they need to develop an effective sustainability policy or benchmark their existing strategy against examples from some of the most successful companies in the industry.

IMHX 2022 Group Director, Rob Fisher, comments: “In business, sustainability refers to operating without negatively impacting the environment, community or society as a whole. Sustainable firms consider a wide array of factors, such as a company’s carbon footprint, water usage, community development efforts and board diversity when making business decisions.

“Sustainability has emerged as a strategic imperative. Consumers increasingly show a preference for brands and products with authentic sustainability credentials and, as a result, more companies will only deal with businesses that share their sustainability values and don’t treat the issue as another marketing veneer.”

Harry Watts, Managing Director of SEC Storage, says: “Sustainability is the new frontier on which companies must compete and it is going to have a significant impact on every business’s long-term viability. Increasingly we will see that a positive approach to social and environmental issues brings financial reward, so ‘doing good’ will have a direct impact on a company’s ability to ‘do well.’

“It is no longer enough to ‘greenwash’ your company’s environmental performance or treat issues such as diversity and inclusion in the workplace as another ‘box-ticking exercise’. Companies that neglect the important role that sustainability is starting to play across the commercial world will struggle in the same way that many retailers were left behind or went out of business altogether because they failed to recognise how the emergence of internet shopping was going to affect their business model until it was too late.”

The IMHX Sustainability Zone – delivered by SEC Storage – will comprise a number of dedicated areas where visitors can learn about the developments in technology as well as the social issues and operational trends that are shaping today’s sustainable supply chains.

By taking a holistic approach, the zone will provide visitors with an insight into an array of adoptable sustainable initiatives. Interactive augmented reality features will complement physical displays, while virtual reality will be used to allow visitors to ‘travel through a portal’ and bring different sustainable solutions to life.

Watts continues: “At SEC, we’re extremely excited about delivering an experience for visitors that will showcase Industry 4.0 technological, operational and market trends, through cutting-edge, immersive technologies. Visitors will be able to step into a world that will highlight not only how fascinating the logistics industry is right now, but will also show how much potential there is in their own operations.”

Fisher adds: “Our Sustainability Zone is certainly going to have the ‘wow factor.’ It is one of many new features planned for IMHX 2022 which will ensure that every aspect of the event is relevant for the challenges and opportunities presenting themselves to companies in the logistics and supply chain sectors today.”

LogiMAT postponed until May

LogiMAT, the International Trade Show for Intralogistics Solutions and Process Management scheduled for March 8–10, 2022, in Stuttgart, has been postponed due to the renewed challenges associated with Covid-19. The organiser, EUROEXPO Messe und Kongress-GmbH, has worked closely with exhibitors in making the decision to push back the event to May 31–June 2, 2022.

“The current high level of case incidences is unsettling to everyone, including our exhibitors,” explained Michael Ruchty, Exhibition Director of LogiMAT Stuttgart. “This is understandable and cannot simply be ignored. That’s why we are compelled once more to respond to the situation at hand. Our exhibitors need certainty for their planning, and that’s difficult right now.

“From today’s perspective, it isn’t clear whether it will be possible to host the full on-site event in March. The exhibitors would like to see an in-person event, but if vaccination rates remain too low and the resulting strain on hospital capacities leads once more to the introduction of stricter measures, then that’s not in the interests of everyone involved. We must do everything we can to ensure that the event lives up to the understandable expectations of on-site exhibitors and visitors. That’s why it’s not surprising that many exhibitors explicitly support this postponement.”

The LogiMAT.digital platform will be extended for all participants to the end of June 2022 to bridge the time until the trade show in May 2022.

IMHX is back – and it’s live!

Next September sees the return of IMHX – the UK’s premier logistics solutions and intralogistics technology event. IMHX 2022 will open for business at the NEC, Birmingham, on 6th September 2022 and will showcase the developments that are reshaping the post-pandemic global logistics industry over three days.

IMHX 2022 event director, Rob Fisher, commented: “Nothing compares with the power of face-to-face meetings and the opportunity to engage with product demonstrations and interactive displays that a ‘live’, in-person event provides.

IMHX 2022 will be the essential gathering place for UK logistics professionals to reconnect with the industry, stay ahead of supply chain trends and source the latest storage and handling solutions from some of the world’s most innovative and influential manufacturers and suppliers.”

Logistics Business, a long-time IMHX exhibitor and media partner, has already reserved its stand – 4J30 – at IMHX 2022, where we will be looking forward to meeting readers, subscribers and industry colleagues.

Warehouse automation

The opportunity to see working demonstrations of the latest automated handling technology – from entry level solutions to fully automated warehouse systems  – is certain to be one of the main attractions of IMHX 2022.

“Interest in warehouse automation has been growing exponentially over several years and the impact of Brexit and the pandemic on the availability of picking staff, forklift drivers and other warehouse personnel has driven demand for the automated guided vehicles, autonomous vehicles and other forms of robotics to new levels,” said Fisher.

IMHX 2022 will also be the place to examine the advanced lift truck power sources, such as lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, that are remodelling the way that many companies operate their intralogistics processes.

Fisher commented: “With heightened environmental concerns, the market for low – or zero – emission fuel technologies is growing significantly and many of the companies at the forefront of the low emission lift truck revolution will be highlighting their latest models at IMHX 2022.”

E-commerce technology

Meanwhile, with the sustained growth of e-commerce driving demand for specialist order fulfilment services, IMHX 2022 is well placed for visitors to compare order picking systems, packaging technology and parcel sortation solutions.

With over 25,000 sq ft of exhibition space, IMHX 2022 enjoys cross-industry support from the UK’s leading logistics industry associations and trade bodies, including: Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA), the UK Materials Handling Association (UKMHA); and the UK Warehousing Association (UKWA).

Dave Berridge, Secretary of AMHSA, commented: “As the world realigns post-pandemic, vibrant business events like IMHX 2022 will provide vital meeting places for logistics professionals to reconnect and discover new ways of improving their businesses.”

Clare Bottle, CEO of the UK Warehousing Association, said: “IMHX is a melting pot for all elements of the third party logistics, supply chain planning and materials handling industries. It is the perfect place to connect manufacturers and suppliers of a host of products and services with the organisations that have the most to gain from them.”

UK Materials Handling Association CEO, Tim Waples, said: “A visit to IMHX is always a great chance to see the complete range of materials handling equipment, from conventional fork lift trucks and pallet movers to state-of-the-art intralogistics solutions, all under one roof. This is a wonderful opportunity to understand how modern technology can integrate with conventional handling solutions to deliver the operational benefits supply chain bosses are looking for.”

Fisher added: “We’ve got lots of exciting plans for IMHX 2022 which will ensure that every aspect of the event is relevant for the challenges and opportunities presenting themselves to companies in the logistics and supply chain sectors today.

”The past 18 months or so has been an extremely challenging time for everyone, so it will be great to be back at the NEC and I look forward to safely welcoming visitors and exhibitors alike to an event where it is certain that a lot of business will be done.”

IMHX 2022 is co-owned by Informa Exhibitions and the UK Materials Handling Association (formerly BITA – the British Industrial Truck Association).
