CFTS warns of need for post-lockdown inspections

CFTS, the body behind the national standard for Thorough Examinations, has confirmed that any equipment that was out of action (stood down or left idle) for a prolonged period during the latest lockdown is due an inspection before it is recommissioned for service.

Owners and users of work equipment have a legal responsibility to arrange Thorough Examinations, in line with LOLER and PUWER regulations.

CFTS Chairman Geoff Martin says: “The HSE is very clear on the importance of ensuring regular Thorough Examinations throughout the pandemic. Equipment can be dangerous and cause an accident if it’s faulty. The risk is even higher if the equipment has been stored for a long period of time, such as during this latest lockdown. A Thorough Examination will determine if there has been any deterioration over recent weeks and will confirm whether equipment is safe to use.

“It is important to remember that equipment owners do not have to use the inspection provider offered by their insurance company. For example, they are free to choose a local CFTS-accredited examiner, who will assess parts such as the steering, brakes and tyres, in addition to the lifting components, ensuring that the truck is fully fit for purpose.”

Once the work equipment has received a Thorough Examination, it can be recommissioned for service. Owners should refer to the operator’s manual for guidance on the requirements for testing and servicing.

“CFTS-accredited providers are available now and have remained open throughout the pandemic to ensure that all work equipment stays up and running,” adds Geoff Martin. “This third lockdown has been no different, and we encourage all owners and users to get in touch should you have any queries about getting operations going again.”

Toyota Material Handling Retains EcoVadis Platinum Ranking

Since 2012, Toyota Material Handling Europe has been continuously assessed by EcoVadis, with focus on key topics including environment, labour & human rights, sustainable procurement and ethics. During recent years, Toyota has consistently received Gold level scores, but now – two years in a row – the Platinum award has been achieved by the company. This is the highest possible score, ranking Toyota Material Handling amongst the top 1% of companies in the ‘general-purpose machinery’ sector.

EcoVadis provides the sustainability ratings of more than 75.000 companies worldwide, based on their environmental, social and ethical performance. Its online platform provides desktop sustainability assessment, allowing 175 multinationals to access ratings of their selected suppliers across 155 countries.

“In my role, I am committed to lead the way and make sure we continue integrating sustainability throughout the way we run our business”, says Ernesto Domínguez, who became President and CEO of Toyota Material Handling Europe last year.

“The EcoVadis assessment system is very important for us, because this makes it easier for our customers to choose the right partners for the future. This audit helps us work in the area of Kaizen [continuous improvement]. I am very proud that we are the first in the material handling industry to achieve platinum recognition. This gives reassurance to our customers and also fulfils our responsibility to inspire others to strive for the highest standards” concludes Domínguez.

Group effort to increase transparency through the network

All Toyota Material Handling’s European factories and local entities undergo this yearly survey, which results in the individual scoring of each entity. This responds to customers’ requests at local level – which have continued to increase since 2020.

Over 50% of TMHE local entities are now achieving Gold or Platinum scores, meaning they are individually at the same level as the top 10% best rated companies. As of today, Toyota Material Handling UK, Toyota Material Handling Italia, and Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing France have achieved the Platinum label, while 11 other local operations have achieved the Gold standard.

In 2018, Toyota Material Handling Europe also received the first ever Supplier Excellence Award from EcoVadis for ‘Best Group Engagement’. The award represented Toyota’s commitment to transparency on the performance of all local entities, Gold rating for 30% of subsidiaries, and a top 3% ranking in the industry.

Konecranes to Deliver 7 Tailored Forklifts

La Cisa Trasporti Industriali S.r.l. (La Cisa) ordered a total of seven tailored forklift trucks from Konecrane for their operations in northern Italy, with four 25-ton trucks going to Padua and three 33-ton trucks destined for Dalmine, Bergamo. Customized for use in special industrial applications and steel handling, the tailored forklifts will be delivered in July 2021.

La Cisa started as a few-man family company in 1969. Today, it is an international provider of logistics services, warehouse management and vehicle rentals. In addition, through their internal division La Cisa Technology s.r.l., they design and produce equipment for highly specific uses and handling, which they sell all over the world.

With their head office in Dalmine (Bergamo), near Milan, they employ more than 300 people in five countries. As their business continues to develop into 2021, they can see a clear need to expand operational flexibility with additional forklifts that offer greater lifting capacity and the opportunity to unify their fleet for reliability, responsiveness and up-to-date technology. Thanks to strong local support from regional distributor Movincar S.p.A., they decided to order from Konecranes because they had already been using four Konecranes SMV 25-1200 C forklifts, delivered from 2016 to 2019, and have been impressed with their efficiency and performance.

“We have unusual requirements,” says Roberto Provenzi, Area Manager and Co-founder and owner of the Croatian branch, La Cisa. “These tailored forklifts need specialized attachments with a combination of strength and precision, and Konecranes has been able to provide exactly that. From first contact to clarifying our requirements, through to the offer and our final order, Movincar have always given excellent service on behalf of Konecranes. We know we will continue to receive the support we need during assembly, commissioning and future maintenance.”

“The fact that La Cisa chose Konecranes to update their fleet is testament to both the quality of our equipment and our strong business relationship,” says Tommaso Chindemi, Area Manager, Konecranes Lift Trucks and Liftace. “When they receive their new lift trucks later this year, we trust that the testing period will give them the confidence to finalize the purchase of two additional SMV 33-1200 C forklifts that they have optioned in this order. We look forward to continuing our work with La Cisa long into the future.”

The four Konecranes SMV 25-1200 C forklift trucks going to Padua are standard models with a range of features to enhance their performance, including an automatic greasing system, extra lighting, and the ability to set a speed limit. Their main function will be to handle iron and steel products, mostly billets and bars. The three Konecranes SMV 33-1200 C heading for Dalmine will be fitted with an additional hydraulic cooling system and an electric tilting cabin to simplify maintenance. They will also have structural adjustments to allow for the installation and use of La Cisa electromagnets. The magnets are for the improved handling of steel bars, pipes, slab and billets up to 500°.

Both models will have special strengthening reinforcements for the carriage and mast, as well as added counterweights for high-capacity loads in different formations. All of the new lift trucks will be equipped with TRUCONNECT Basic and La Cisa TMS (tracking machine system)  for remote monitoring, so that La Cisa always has a clear overview of the status of their fleet in near real time, for usage statistics, easier maintenance planning, and the ability to track KPIs through the yourKONECRANES customer portal.

No-Cheat Seat Belts on Forklifts Introduced

No-cheat seat belts on forklifts is a new feature by Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks which may be a game changer in avoiding deaths in potentially tragic forklift truck incidents.

According to the latest figures from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, tipping accidents are the single most common cause of operator fatalities (42%) among forklift operators. In almost every case, the driver was ‘mousetrapped’ between the truck and the ground, causing massive trauma to the head or upper body.

According to Stewart Gosling of Red Diamond Distribution, exclusive importers of Mitsubishi forklift trucks: “These accidents occur because, as a forklift tips over, the operator’s overwhelming instinct is to try and jump clear. Seemingly, no amount of training or experience can overcome the flight instinct..with fatal consequences. Sadly, if the operator was to stay in place, they would walk away with bruising and little more.

“However, actually keeping them seated has proved an insurmountable challenge… until now.”

Many operators simply can’t be bothered to buckle up, especially in on-off applications. At the same time, supervisors tire of reminding staff to comply. Even where safety systems are fitted, operators routinely attempt to trick them by fastening their seat belts permanently behind them.

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks has overcome this issue on its latest range of EDiA electric trucks with a seat belt compliance feature: a switchable option that allows the employer to ensure wearing a seat belt is mandatory.

“Sometimes, the simple stuff can have the greatest impact,” sums up Stewart Gosling. “We may not be able to change an operator’s natural instincts but now we can make a life-or-death difference by no-Cheat seat belts to ensure they are worn.”

New Electric Counterbalance Truck Launched

Yale Europe Materials Handling has expanded its ground-breaking range of products for less demanding applications with the ERP16-20UXT. Suitable for applications that require intermittent use of materials handling equipment, the three-wheel electric counterbalance truck can help customers in a number of industries with their operations.

The Yale® UX Series was first launched in 2020 after Yale identified a demand for products that are used intermittently, but are still capable of high levels of efficiency and productivity. For small to medium sized companies, or larger companies who require straightforward load movements, the ERP16-20UXT is a good choice due to its low cost of ownership.

Matt Hardy, Yale Solutions Manager EMEA, said: “The ERP16-20UXT electric counterbalance truck offers an affordable solution to customers, with the added benefit of maintenance and support from the experienced Yale dealer network and backed by the trusted Yale name. For this reason, it could be a natural fit for garden centres, light or small manufacturing companies, and third party logistics operators. Small printing companies and farms may also find the ERP16-20UXT meets their requirements.”

To ensure that the ERP16-20UXT provides high levels of productivity even in the shortest period of use, the truck has been designed to offer operators great visibility, comfortable ergonomics, and highly responsive steering.

A clear view

The ERP16-20UXT benefits from a wide mast window, giving the operator a clear view while handling and transporting loads. Due to the shape of the truck, operators can also enjoy good rear vision in the cabin of the ERP16-20UXT.

Inside the ergonomic compartment, all controls are in easy reach to reduce fatigue and increase comfort for the operator. The dashboard mounted IP65 display offers basic information at a glance, such as the battery discharge indicator, travel speed, and fault codes to enable a quick repair. Often businesses with infrequent materials handling needs also have compact working environments. The three wheel design of the ERP16-20UXT minimises the truck’s turning radius, while highly responsive steering enables the operator to move with ease.

Alerting the workforce

In applications where materials handling equipment are not in constant use, it is vital that those in the near vicinity of a truck in operation are alerted to its presence. The ERP16-20UXT comes with an amber strobe light as standard to give pedestrians an additional visible alert to a moving truck. The rear grab handle has an integrated horn button, which allows the operator to easily issue an additional audio warning while reversing.

Hardy said: “Our UX series was developed after gathering customer insight. We realised the opportunity to offer a range of solutions at an affordable price to customers who need responsive materials handling equipment for less demanding operations. The ERP16-20UXT three-wheel electric counterbalance truck is an attractive addition to this range, offering enhanced performance, and low cost of ownership.”

Everything. Except Emissions

A new electric truck in the 3.5 to 5-tonne sector promises efficient results both indoors and outdoors. Paul Hamblin hears about it.

“A bit of colour in your workplace routine, which can sometimes be autumnal grey,” said Gerald Strugg, STILL GmbH Product Manager, E-trucks. Via a slick online press conference, he was referring to the latest model of the STILL RX 60 electric forklift, an eye-catching all-rounder which offers what has been a tricky deliverable in the electric space, a truck marketed to be effective
both indoors and outdoors. “It offers everything except exhaust gases,” he quipped.

The 3.5 to 5-tonne model aims to build on the RX 60 series’ achievements in agility, manoeuvrability and high driving comfort. The compact 80 Volt electric forklift truck offers, says the company, outstanding handling performance and high availability. STILL says it is opening up a new perspective for even more companies when it comes to designing their truck fleet, whether in terms of performance, cost, environmental compatibility or efficiency of use.

This year is a special one for the Hamburg-based company founded in 1920 by Hans Still and it is making much of the switch to electric power. Using resources optimally and efficiently is inherent to its DNA. Ever since the company was founded 100 years ago everything has revolved around the innovative combination of electrical energy and mobility – as well as a pioneering spirit and
passion for progress with a clear eye for current market requirements. In the post-war period it was the lack of fuel combined with the growing mobility of the economy that brought great success – first in 1946 with the electric cart EK 2000 and only a few years later with the first STILL electric forklift, the EGS 1000. Numerous successful forklift truck series later, it is still the clear focus on customer and industry needs that is at the centre of this latest product development: powerful performance and ergonomics combined with high energy efficiency and the possibility of implementing zero emissions in internal logistics. It’s a logic that makes the power pack the very heart of the RX 60-35/50.

Power for any application

Seven different vehicle variants are available to customers with a load centre of 500 mm as standard, or 600 mm upon request. A high-performance variant is available in all weight classes,
which excels in demanding application profiles with even more handling capacity, more power and acceleration. CSO/Member Management Board at STILL GmbH, Thomas A Fischer told
me that the truck will be marketed to multiple sectors. “We have a wide range – automotive, chemical, beverage, retail, indeed anywhere with a need to lift heavy loads.”

Crucially, both lead acid batteries and lithium-ion technology are available, and STILL says it has firm evidence of their effectiveness. As early as 2019, an independent test certified that the
smaller version of the new series, the RX 60-25 (carrying 2.5 tonnes), ranked among the best in direct electric forklift truck competition, offering handling performance and gradeability on a par
with a comparable diesel forklift truck. STILL engineers have now transferred this successful drive concept to the 5-tonne model. This is made possible by two powerful encapsulated three-phase
drive motors with active cooling in the front axle. In the high performance version, the two 11 kW motors provide even more power. They increase the drive motor output by 46 percent compared to the predecessor. As both motors are driven even at full steering angle, the truck is particularly manoeuvrable. Demand-driven active cooling ensures high thermal stability even at maximum handling performance. Robust and maintenance-free fans cool the encapsulated components of the power electronics as well as the lift and drive motors via temperature control, all without filters.

Thanks to its low consumption and a battery capacity of 930 Ah (59.5 kWh), or up to 118.4 kWh in the Li-Ion version of the RX 60-50, STILL says the power pack can easily cope with two shifts
in a row without interim charging. To change the battery, the now proven lateral battery door opens up new perspectives – quite literally. The 4 mm thick steel door of the RX 60-35/50 can now also be easily opened 180 degrees to the rear, and the battery can be changed by just one person using an electric pallet truck, saving space, time, energy and resources. Optionally, an integrated built-in charger provides even more flexibility for quick and easy interim charging during work.

It’s important to offer choice to customers, says Thomas Fischer. “We have a good portfolio and we offer both lead-acid and lithium options. We see a clear customer trend towards li-ion, though,” he points out. He predicts that market-share of electric trucks will be “over 50% in 5-10 years”. Does he see a similar success curve for hydrogen-based fuel cell technology? “Fuel cell is not as economic, and particularly so if it is not subsidised. There are some big political discussions needed, as it could be impossible to develop more fully without Brussels subsidies,” he says.

Speed and ergonomics

Speed and stamina are also features. The RX 60 can hit a nippy 20 km/h, while time is saved (and safety preserved) with the quick start mode and an automatic spring-loaded parking brake if the driver steps out of the cab. Meanwhile, the intuitive on-board computer enables clear and convenient overview of all relevant performance functions and truck information. STILL designers have recognised the role of both ergonomics and enjoyment in maintaining employee engagement. The RX 60 stands out with its low front body and easy-access placement of controls and displays. The mast profiles designed for optimum visibility create an extra large field of vision around transported goods and past the mast.

The driver’s cab not only has 16 mm more headroom than its predecessor, its footwell is also particularly spacious. For a fatigue-free leg position for the driver, it is about one hand’s width wider than the predecessor and also offers sufficient freedom of movement for feet up to huge shoe sizes. For greater safety and comfort when getting on and off the vehicle, the enlarged step has an additional nonslip edge. The ergonomically shaped battery cover also provides comfort: even with the seat adjusted to the maximum rearward position, the calves do not touch it. The pedal position alleviates strain on the legs and allows an unimpeded movement between the accelerator and brake pedals.

On the wider business front, Chairman of Management Board, Henry Puhl suggests that the company has coped well with the unexpected rigours of 2020. “We created a safe working environment, we’ve stayed fully functional and we’re working with customers to feel secure in what we do.” Indeed, he strikes a note of optimism, which is a rare commodity in Europe as the much-feared second wave of the pandemic unfolds. “I want to spark some confidence,” he suggests. “We know a lot more about COVID now, we a know a lot more about how to handle it and we feel
connected to our customers – all of us have to work together to get through it.”

He admits to a double-digit percentage drop in orders caused by COVID, but counters that STILL will reap the benefits sown by the pandemic’s ‘winners’ within its customer sectors – led by intralogistics, driven by fast-growing ecommerce transactions. STILL’s message is that choosing the right forklift is nowadays about much more than brand and tonnage. Internal logistics systems matter, and the right energy choice plays a vital role. This can vary depending on the application profile and individual perspective – e.g. total operating costs, sustainability, digitalisation or service.

New Electric Piggyback Truck Launched

Hiab, part of Cargotec, launches the MOFFETT E4 NX, its next generation eSeries of electric forklifts and the world’s first all electric 3-wheel drive truck mounted forklift. Inside the chassis of a MOFFETT M4, Hiab has constructed a zero-emission truck mounted forklift powered by lithium ion batteries with new controllers and the new HMI (Human Machine Interface) that displays battery capacity, machine performance and service information. The MOFFETT can be charged from a regular household socket or a 30 amp socket for faster charging, as well as from the truck in between deliveries.

The new MOFFETT eSeries, currently available in four E4 NX models with more being added, is not only beneficial to the environment as it has zero emissions, it is also much more comfortable and safer for the operator as it is virtually silent and has less vibrations than a diesel powered truck. The low noise means it can be operated without earplugs allowing the driver to both see and hear danger. It can also be operated at night-time and deliver the cargo inside warehouses.

The total cost of ownership is lower than the equivalent diesel model as it can be electrically charged and has reduced service costs. It is engineered with fewer moving parts, which reduces service time and spare parts costs.

“The MOFFETT eSeries is the natural choice for customers who need to enter low emissions zones, work at night or meet sustainability targets. However, as it’s cheaper to run, safer and more comfortable, we think it will prove popular with customers in a wide range of industries. We are certain that drivers will appreciate working in an exhaust free environment and being able to hear what is happening around them,” says Jann Hansen, Director, Sales & Product Business Management, Truck Mounted Forklift, Hiab.

The MOFFETT eSeries have in-built connectivity so that owners can access Hiab’s HiConnect™. HiConnect monitors over 100 machine parameters. Some are displayed on the HMI while the full range of data are available from the HiConnect web portal. Parameters range from battery capacity to delivery route and time, driver safety and service notifications.

Multi-million-pound Battery Partnership brings Greener Outlook

Hyperdrive Innovation, the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of lithium-ion battery technology, today announces a new multi-million-pound 4-year supply agreement with Moffett, part of Hiab and world leading forklift truck manufacturer, to supply state-of-the-art battery packs for zero-emission machinery.

The supply agreement, worth more than £500,000 in the first year alone, will initially see hundreds of high-performance battery packs deployed in Moffett’s fully electric truck-mounted forklifts. The partnership will instil clean, electric technology into the operational heart of hundreds of organisations worldwide, including well-known British brands Pets at Home and Topps Tiles.

Orders for the world’s first fully electric Lithium-ion powered truck-mounted forklift – the Moffett E-Series – have grown significantly since its release in 2013. With the support of Hyperdrive, Moffett aims to meet this increasing demand by growing its fully electric fleet six-fold by 2030 to around 30% of all vehicles produced.

Jann Hansen, Sales Director Moffett said: “Customer demand for cleaner, quieter and more sustainable equipment is growing like never before. Our partnership with Hyperdrive allows us to cater to this demand, without compromising the world-beating performance and trusted reliability expected from all our equipment. Going electric offers countless operational advantages for our customers and we’re excited to be leading the industry in this space.”

The near silent drivetrains of Moffett’s electric forklifts allow operations to continue out of traditional working hours and enables night-time deliveries for Moffett’s customers – a significant advantage to operational efficiency. The lack of exhaust pollution also means that the same machinery can be used for both outdoor and indoor applications. This means drivers can unload and load delivery trucks and stock warehouses without switching between electric and diesel vehicles – ideal for warehousing and distribution settings.

There are also significant fuel and maintenance savings associated with Moffett’s fully electric forklifts, with total ownership costs for Moffett’s E-series approximately 20% lower than diesel equivalents. Diesel powered forklift trucks typically produce more than 18 tonnes of carbon emissions per 1,500 hours of operation. Moffett estimates that its fully electric forklifts can achieve a carbon emission reduction of 75%, providing a significant boost to companies’ green credentials. Steve Travis, Transport Manager at Pets at Home said: “Fully electric forklifts give us the potential to significantly improve our operating costs, while at the same time minimizing the environmental impact to neighbours of our stores.”

Hyperdrive’s modular battery packs were chosen due to their top of the range energy density and modularity, allowing flexibility and straightforward application in a number of different machines. This opens up the possibility of deploying fully electric equipment across a variety of different settings, including warehousing, distribution and logistics, materials handling, and construction.

The news comes just weeks after a European-wide report – which included views from experts from Wilmott Dixson, Innovate UK, Colas Group, and NCC – forecast rapid growth in demand for cleaner and quieter electrified equipment over the next decade to meet emission targets and ‘build back better’ following the COVID-19 pandemic. The construction industry is responsible for 40% of European carbon emissions, making it an urgent priority for decarbonisation to meet net zero targets.

Stephen Irish, Commercial Director of Hyperdrive Innovation said: “Electrification will be central to the decarbonisation of heavy industry and it’s no surprise that demand for cleaner electrified equipment is booming. Our partnerships with forward thinking companies such as Moffett will help meet the massively growing demand for electrified solutions and support the delivery of a more sustainable future.”
