Views and Comment from ProMat Chicago

Logistics Business’ man in Chicago, Ian Wright, spoke to two CEOs of exhibiting companies at ProMat to take the American materials handling pulse.

Robert McKeel (pictured above), CEO of FORTNA, told Ian: “We continue to grow. We have we’ve grown the business very rapidly from 2020, to today. We’d like to continue that. We think the market still has double digit growth potential over the long term. Obviously, there’s some short term dynamics with the markets that our whole industry is dealing with, in that we’ve looked at ways that we can expand our offerings to customers to meet different needs. So a big focus coming into this year was what I’m gonna call brownfield opportunities. How do we go into existing distribution centres and add more capability for customers so they can get more out of the assets they already own.

“Our partnerships with Packsize and Sitma were one of those initiatives to help go look at their packaging operations, save them transportation costs or increase their throughput through automated packaging. As one example of that, we’ve created some robotic solutions, ‘opti sweep’, that we announced at ProMat two years ago. We’re rolling that out as another brownfield solution to help upgrade, you know, maybe old bomb-bay sorters or tilt tray sorters with robotics and automation to get more throughput.

“So I’ll call, broadly, those asset improvement initiatives to get more utilization and existing assets, and then we’re still looking at new distribution centres for our customers. And largely we’re seeing opportunities around what I’ll call flexible automation, which is the robotic systems like AutoStore or HAI, plus our partners. And in those customers can make shorter term investments because the solutions are flexible, and it’s easy to add on additional storage or additional robots for throughput or capacity, and because of that, you don’t need to create a 10-year business case, you can create a three-year business case and then add on and expand so you don’t put all your money in day one. You can add on your money over time. So those kind of things to help people in a more uncertain environment still invest in the capabilities that they need.”

Jim Ryan, Sentry

We asked Jim Ryan, CEO and Founder of Sentry Protection Products, to tell us a little bit about the new product offering – the configurator – that is brand new for ProMat.

“Well, and going back to how the new product works, and the fact that we can now cover every size column with a combination of three different pieces. Then the challenge for our customers is, okay, how do I put the right pieces in the right places? So what we’ve created and put onto our website is a configurator that simply means that you are able to place into this configurator, the number of columns, the size of the column, the shape of the column. And it automatically, not only calculates how many parts and pieces you do, but it draws you a picture showing how that goes together, and it gives you the results at the bottom. So if you happen to have 20 columns that need a little bit of this and a little bit of that, it automatically puts a list of the items that you need together. It can even quote them, and gives you the results so that it’s not guesswork. You know exactly what you need to cover the columns and the number of columns that you need. Currently, it’s available to our reseller network, but we are very shortly going to put it on to our main website for anyone to be able to do that.”

Outpacing Tomorrow’s System Integration

Peter MacLeod meets Thomas van Workum, President of FORTNA International, a man who sits the helm of a company that has its finger in just about every piece of supply chain pie. Given the unpredictability inherent in today’s supply chains, a robust, flexible, and reliable fulfillment operation is key to operational success. If it is also cost-effective and carbon-light in operation, then delivering promises to a demanding and expectant customer base becomes less of a challenge and more of an opportunity.

Supply chain optimization

FORTNA is a global partner in supply chain optimization, providing end-to-end solutions that drive operational excellence. From consultancy and system design to automation, software integration, and lifecycle services, the company delivers seamless and scalable solutions tailored to each customer’s needs. As a company with nearly 80 years of history, it has long been one of the recognized leaders in the U.S. and is expanding its footprint in the European market. The upcoming LogiMAT trade show presents an opportunity to showcase its expertise and build new partnerships within the region. Exploring some of these further, I was delighted to be able to interview Thomas van Workum, President FORTNA International, the man who leads the commercial, operations and services supporting its International expansion.

AI for Operational Excellence

While AI continues to be surrounded by hype, FORTNA takes a pragmatic approach—using AI where it truly delivers value. “Our focus is on leveraging AI to create optimal outcomes for our customers,” says Thomas van Workum, President FORTNA International. AI is embedded in three key areas: Tech Support, Software Development and Machine Learning for Automation.
We have developed language models that analyze documentation and historical issue resolution data. This allows tech support teams to identify malfunctions and find solutions much faster, minimizing downtime for customers. “Instead of manually searching through manuals, our AI assistant quickly scans both documentation and past cases, providing a solution in seconds,” van Workum explains.

AI is also transforming how FORTNA develops software for system integration. “We use AI to assist in writing code, which significantly shortens lead times and enables our software engineers to focus on more complex tasks,” he adds. While complex solutions still require manual customization, about 30% of the code is now AI-generated, improving efficiency and accelerating deployment.
FORTNA’s AI-powered robotic solutions use vision technology to pick and place products of all shapes, weights, and sizes. “By leveraging AI and machine learning, our robotic picking solutions achieve top-tier pick rates and accuracy, outperforming many existing solutions in the market,” van Workum notes. With rising labor costs and shrinking availability, businesses are increasingly open to investing in robotics, and FORTNA is at the forefront of delivering these solutions.

Driving Carbon Reduction

Decarbonization is a major challenge in logistics and supply chain management. I asked van Workum in what areas FORTNA is helping its customers reduce their carbon consumption. He answers by identifying two chief ways – designing warehouse automation to use less energy and by optimising packaging to reduce vehicle mileage.

FORTNA designs systems that dynamically adjust energy consumption based on demand. “If the load on a system is lower due to order fluctuations, we don’t need it running at full capacity,” van Workum explains. “By reducing speeds and switching off unnecessary components, we help our customers cut energy usage. With transport, we are working to do it in the most efficient way and therefore we work with partners to supply the best solution to our customers.” Through strategic partnerships with Packsize and Sitma, FORTNA minimizes packaging waste, reducing the amount of air transported in shipments. “Less empty space means fewer trucks on the road, lowering carbon emissions. While eliminating packaging entirely isn’t always feasible, minimizing it makes a real difference,” he adds.

Navigating Supply Chain Uncertainty

In today’s volatile geopolitical and economic climate, businesses must prepare for both the “known unknowns” and the unexpected disruptions that can upend supply chains. So how can FORTNA help its customers become more resistant to the effects of these so-called black swan events?

“Our promise is that FORTNA thinks alongside the customer in how to de-risk their operations and inventory planning. Our consulting team works alongside customers to de-risk their operations and improve inventory planning,” van Workum says. This includes in-depth network analysis to identify potential vulnerabilities and optimal warehouse locations. We do that for some of the largest brands in the world.

At the warehouse level, FORTNA’s automation and software solutions provide an additional layer of resilience. “By integrating robotic picking, customers become less reliant on manual labour, reducing exposure to workforce shortages. Our Warehouse Execution System (WES) is also among the best in the world, continuously optimizing inventory allocation and fulfillment workflows,” he explains.

Looking ahead to LogiMAT, I asked van Workum which of the company’s strengths and specialisms it will be looking to highlight in what is becoming quite a crowded and competitive marketplace.
“We are one of the few system integrators that fully embrace emerging technologies,” he says. Unlike many competitors that focus solely on their own product portfolio, FORTNA prioritizes finding the best solution for each customer’s needs. This commitment to innovation is evident in FORTNA’s collaborations with technology leaders like AutoStore and Geek+, where the company integrates third-party solutions with its own advanced software to provide customers with tailored, high-performance systems.

With a growing presence in Europe and a track record of delivering impactful solutions, FORTNA is set to make a strong impression at LogiMAT—demonstrating how it helps businesses achieve operational excellence in an ever-evolving supply chain landscape.

Project to Expand Distribution Operations Completed

A state-of-the-art shuttle system, automated processes for incoming goods, 130,000 storage bins, and new picking workstations: Erwin Müller has significantly expanded its warehouse capacity at the Buttenwiesen / Germany site. FORTNA was commissioned with the concept design and implementation of the new future-oriented distribution operations, where they were a driving force and key partner throughout the project up to the go-live in December 2023.

Founded in 1951 as a textile wholesaler, Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH continues to grow. The company has gradually developed into a multi-channel specialist for home and household textiles and has proven it has the knack for understanding consumer needs when it opened an online shop in 1997.

“Since opening our online shop 27 years ago, we have always focused on being one step ahead of market requirements, and our current project is no exception: greater capacity, more flexible fulfillment and customer service that sets new standards,” explains Tobias Eder, Managing Director at Erwin Müller. “After so many years of being able to count on FORTNA’s technical expertise and implementation skills, we once again entrusted project manager Andreas Beermann and his team with the concept design and upgrade to our distribution operations.”

The data collected was used to design the upgrade, which consists of a new building with a main incoming goods centre and a shuttle and dispatch system connected to the existing building via a bridge. FORTNA devised a solution that took place in stages during ongoing operations. The new building will operate as a central warehouse for all items that can be ordered via the catalogue and online shops. The official opening ceremony for the new building took place in May 2021, while steel construction and other installation work for the automated logistics systems were completed in 2023. The shuttle warehouse, with 16 aisles, now provides an additional 11,000 m² of usable space. “We have combined new systems and inventory fulfillment in a multi-site strategy designed to consolidate orders and ensure high-performance processing,” explains Andreas Beermann, Sr. Manager Solution Design at FORTNA. “In the new incoming goods center, automation will significantly increase profitability and efficiency.”

Incoming articles are registered in the new building extension, transferred to containers as required, and scanned into the system using new barcode scanners. One hundred fifty-two shuttle (152) vehicles are used to transport and distribute the items automatically to the appropriate storage locations. The shuttle vehicles can be in either the shuttle warehouse for storage or directly to the eight (8) new ergonomic pick and pack workstations. Once there, they are manually picked to order and packed in up to 180 shipping cartons per hour for international dispatch. This close interaction between manual and automated processes increases productivity, saves time and reduces the error rate.

As Tobias Eder states, “With the support of FORTNA, we have put in place a future-proof solution at Erwin Müller’s central operations in Buttenwiesen that organizes the flow of goods to the best possible extent, is able to react flexibly to changing customer and industry requirements, and also offers sufficient capacity for future growth.”
