Efficient Chargers for Driverless Transport

Optimized operating procedures, maximum performance, safe processes: Fronius solutions are setting new standards for charging industrial trucks and driverless transport systems. These solutions enable users and manufacturers to seamlessly integrate vehicles, chargers and lithium-ion batteries in automated environments.

Driverless transport systems (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that transport goods and materials independently have taken their place alongside industrial trucks as integral components in intralogistics. At the same time, growing demand for digitalized solutions requires charging devices that are powerful, safe and highly available. This is where Fronius systems come in. The company has been a reliable partner for battery charging for 80 years now.

Precise, flexible and reliable loading

The extensive portfolio from charging specialist Fronius works with both lead-acid and lithium batteries. The company offers an array of devices with outputs ranging from one to 30 kilowatts, all internationally certified in accordance with CE, UL and UK CA. Fronius adjusts the charging parameters to the optimum custom charging curve for each customer based on their defined battery setup, and then implements the curve in the charger after completing the release test. This means no additional work for the user.

Intelligent systems maximize the performance and safety of the overall system consisting of the vehicle, battery and charger. They offer high energy efficiency, with a fast and gentle charging process that extends the service life of the batteries. An optimized charging time means vehicles can be put back into operation more quickly, which leads to higher productivity. Also in the range: solutions that integrate renewable energy sources such as solar energy into the charging infrastructure. This increases the sustainability of a forklift fleet and cuts operating costs. If required, Fronius experts can also supplement the complete charging infrastructure, offer support throughout the entire life cycle, and provide regular user training – all from a single source.

Ready for lithium-ion charging

High-performance lithium-ion charging solutions with the SelectION portfolio (CAN transmission) are available for operators and manufacturers of AGVs and AMRs. The devices in the Selectiva 4.0 product line are designed for lead-acid batteries as standard, but with the custom charging curve they can also reliably charge lithium-ion batteries without CAN communication via sliding contacts, for example.

Fronius is playing a key role in the development of pioneering lithium-ion technology: its solutions optimize energy consumption and boost the performance of machines and vehicles. Intelligent charging systems are especially important for AGV users who need to charge their fleet frequently and quickly to ensure smooth operation.

Intelligently networked

Fronius equips its chargers with a gateway to connect to the fleet management system. This means operators are prepared when their markets move to integrate charging technology into fleet management or building management systems. Fronius relies on the industry standard Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) for the transmission of all important information. This charger connection architecture offers a number of advantages ranging from visualization, live data transmission and remote start/stop of the charging process to remote updating of the charger firmware and device data.

Additional functions can be integrated depending on customer requirements. This gives users greater transparency and control over the entire charging infrastructure and enables them to operate their AGV fleet sustainably.

Compact Charging Solution Utilizes Potential

In many warehouses, room is available but not utilized effectively. Every square meter left idle due to inadequate planning represents financial losses for operators. Fronius Perfect Charging’s Project Business Team solves this problem with individualized charging solutions. In collaboration with customers, the charging specialists, design and implement compliant facilities that maximize the full potential for performance and cost optimization.

“Thanks to our compact charging room, companies can now utilize their warehouse areas more efficiently while optimizing their operational processes,” summarizes Stefan Schöftner, Sales Manager at Fronius Perfect Charging Germany. “Our goal is to offer solutions that meet the intralogistical challenges and enable efficient, cost-saving operations for our customers.”

Optimizing space usage

Fronius Perfect Charging’s compact charging room ensures optimal space utilization even in limited intralogistics settings. Based on a flexible modular principle, the system components can be combined and expanded as needed. The benefits are clear: Space savings allow companies to not only use their warehouse areas more efficiently but also reduce operating costs. Additionally, handling efforts are minimized: The right equipment saves time while ensuring user safety and operational efficiency.

“Our solutions offer not only high flexibility and adaptability but can also be tailored to the needs of our customers,” emphasizes Stefan Schöftner. As demand increases and companies grow, their warehouses often need to be enlarged or modified. “Our modular charging solution can be easily dismantled and rebuilt or expanded elsewhere by the user. This offers a huge advantage: If the forklift fleet changes and the charging area needs to be enlarged, the charging station simply grows with it,” adds Schöftner.

Compliant and expandable

Each custom solution is implemented according to applicable standards meeting the highest safety standards for all parties involved. Additionally, Fronius offers training to prevent application errors in advance.

If an operator decides to connect and centrally control its charging infrastructure, this can be done at any time with Charge&Connect – Fronius’ digitalization option. Furthermore, users can easily connect their charging solutions to their own PV system. “This allows for greater independence from the power grid and the use of self-generated solar power for fleet charging. If it turns out that the required space in the warehouse is still too limited, we can also offer charging outdoor solutions,” explains Schöftner.

Beyond Boundaries of Charging Technology

“Let’s meet up” is the theme for Fronius perfect charging technology at LogiMAT 2023 (April 25 to 27th). With their autonomous, flexible, and sustainable battery chargers, the charging experts provide answers to the challenges facing the intralogistics industry. They will be presenting their reliable solutions in Stuttgart at stand A10 in hall 10.

For intralogistics processes to be cost-effective, forklift trucks and AGVs need to be available at all times. In order to also keep the costs generated as part of this process under control, Fronius Perfect Charging also develops sustainable charging solutions with added value. These efficient battery charging systems boast a high level of availability and fault tolerance while keeping costs to a minimum. At LogiMAT 2023, fleet operators, manufacturers, and other interested parties will be able to discuss solutions that are already providing Fronius customers with answers to the challenges of tomorrow today. “LogiMAT is a great opportunity to meet up in person again after a long break. We are very much looking forward to being there,” underlines Patrick Gojer, Business Unit Manager Perfect Charging.

Fronius will be using this trade fair to highlight easy-to-implement complete concepts that push the boundaries of analog systems. The goal here is always to reduce energy costs, optimize self-consumption, and therefore increase customers’ efficiency and competitiveness. “Together we are developing ideas for safe and sustainable energy supply, in order to create genuine added value for manufacturers and users,” explains Patrick Gojer. The portfolio ranges from systems for gentle and energy-efficient charging to innovative solutions with individual charging characteristics for manufacturers in autonomous environments through to the new function PV Connect, which enables forklift trucks and AGVs to be operated using solar energy.

Over 7000 employees worldwide, a current export share of 89 percent, and 1366 active patents: that’s us, that’s Fronius. Founded in 1945 as a regional one-man operation, we are now a global player – a fact that is impressively demonstrated by our 37 international subsidiaries and our network of sales partners in more than 60 countries. And yet, at our core, we are still a family-owned company from Austria, active in photovoltaics, welding, and battery charging technology. We have always developed products and solutions for a future worth living, offering our customers an all-in-one package in the process: from advance planning and consulting to ongoing monitoring and a repair service tailored to their specific needs.
