First Anniversary for UK Warehouse

cargo-partner, a group company of Nippon Express Holdings, is celebrating a year of transformation at its Basildon, Essex warehouse.

Since cargo-partner acquired the warehouse in April 2024, the facility has evolved into a key logistics and distribution hub serving both the UK and continental Europe. Over the past 12 months, cargo-partner has expanded its team, upskilled its workforce, and broadened its service offerings, solidifying Basildon as a strategic asset in the company’s global operations. Located in a prime position for logistics operations, the Basildon facility now serves as a fully-fledged road and warehouse hub, offering a comprehensive range of solutions designed to support businesses, retailers, and industries across the UK and Europe.

To mark one year since cargo-partner took over the warehouse – and to recognize the synergies and partnership between the cargo-partner and Nippon Express teams in the UK – an anniversary celebration was held at the Basildon site. Attendees included all local cargo-partner colleagues, along with Fergal Keenan, Managing Director of cargo-partner UK & Ireland; Thomas Peklar, Corporate Director Product Management Contract Logistics at cargo-partner; and Steve Williams, Managing Director of Nippon Express UK & Ireland.

Fergal Keenan, Managing Director of cargo-partner UK & Ireland, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made at our Basildon facility over the past year. The site has transformed into a pivotal logistics hub, playing a crucial role in connecting the UK and continental Europe. It was great to recognize this milestone with colleagues from both cargo-partner and Nippon Express and we’re excited to continue to grow our services, delivering innovative, efficient solutions for our customers.”

Driving Digital Transformation for Cargo

At cargo-partner, a group company of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., digitalization is key to shaping the future of logistics and enhancing the customer experience. The company has made significant strides in recent years by integrating advanced digital platforms and data management systems across its organization. Central to this digital transformation is the expertise of cargo-partner’s IT leadership, with women leaders playing an instrumental role in driving these innovations.

Streamlining Logistics Processes

cargo-partner’s commitment to customer-centric digital solutions is evident in its recent developments in IT systems and platforms. “We’ve always aimed to streamline processes and improve efficiency to deliver the best possible experience for our customers,” said Nadezhda Hauer, Head of Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics at cargo-partner. “One of our key milestones has been the implementation of CargoWise across all global locations. This, alongside our proprietary supply chain management platform, SPOT, has enabled us to integrate data across systems and external data sources, giving our customers faster, more transparent services and better control over their shipments.”

Maximizing Customer Value with Salesforce Integration

But CargoWise is just one aspect of cargo-partner’s recent digital transformation efforts. Liandre Vasco, Team Leader IT Sales Applications, has been instrumental in maximizing customer engagement through Salesforce integration. “Salesforce has allowed us to create a 360-degree view of our customer relationships,” Liandre Vasco explained. “This enables us to proactively address customer needs, enhance communication, and ensure that we deliver personalized, responsive service – critical elements in today’s competitive market.”

Enhancing Financial Operations for Seamless Business

On the financial side, Anna Nowak, Team Leader of Finance Applications, has led efforts to optimize financial processes through digital tools. “We’ve leveraged advanced digital invoicing solutions to streamline billing and payment processes, which have directly benefited our customers by improving accuracy, transparency, and speed,” Anna Nowak said. “These innovations not only support our internal efficiency but also enable us to provide faster and more accurate billing for our customers, in many cases integrated forward with the customers’ ERP.”

Fostering Passion and Confidence

At cargo-partner, fostering gender balance and empowering women to excel in IT are priorities embedded in the company’s organizational culture. Yet, challenges persist, not only within the industry but also within the mindset of potential candidates.

“Our biggest hurdle is that very few women apply for IT positions, and when they do, they often aim lower than their experience warrants,” Nadezhda Hauer explained. “Women need to stop waiting, stop doubting, and start stepping up. Passion is the key. If you love the work, you belong here. Women often try to check every box in job descriptions before applying. But that’s not the point – growth comes from challenging yourself. I’ve seen women diminish their knowledge in interviews or undervalue themselves during salary negotiations. This needs to change. As leaders at cargo-partner, we recognize and address these gaps.”

The IT field offers boundless opportunities, flexibility, and pathways for growth. At cargo-partner, teams across regions already achieve gender parity or even majority-female representation in areas like data processing. “Historically, these roles were undervalued. Today, they’re pivotal, and women must realize they belong in every corner of the IT landscape,” Hauer emphasized. By fostering a diverse workforce, cargo-partner is not only enriching its work culture but also ensuring that the company remains innovative and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of its customers.

Completion of cargo-partner Acquisition

NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., is pleased to announce that, in accordance with the share transfer agreement concluded on May 12, 2023 with cargo-partner Group Holding AG and its subsidiaries Multi Transport und Logistik Holding AG, Safer Overseas Transport Holding GmbH, cargo-partner GND GmbH, and CARGO-PARTNER US HOLDINGS INC. (hereinafter collectively referred to as “cargo-partner”), it acquired all shares of several cargo-partner subsidiaries based mainly in Central and Eastern Europe that provide logistics services worldwide on January 4, 2024 through a special purpose company that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nippon Express Europe GmbH (President: Shinichi Kakiyama), itself a European holding subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, and completed all procedures required to make these newly-acquired companies subsidiaries of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS.

Headquartered in Austria, cargo-partner has a robust logistics business base in Central and Eastern Europe, a region that is increasingly attracting attention as an industrial cluster in Europe. It is a highly reputable corporate group focused principally on air and ocean freight forwarding in Europe, Asia, and North America that also offers rail and truck transport and contract logistics services.

The subsidiarization of cargo-partner will complement the NX Group’s logistics infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, expected to see significant future growth as a production base within the European region, and will enable the NX Group to further expand its global network and enhance the services it provides in the European region.

The resultant expansion in the volume of air and ocean freight handled will also strengthen the Group’s competitiveness in the global market, enable it to respond to the diverse demands of its global customers, enhance its ability to meet logistics demand between Asia and Europe and elsewhere, and bolster its global account structure.

Since the NX Group and cargo-partner have differing customer bases and differing strengths in specific countries and regions, they will seek to create synergies in their logistics operations through mutual complementation, thereby accelerating the expansion and development of their global businesses.

Going forward, the NX Group and cargo-partner will maximize the synergies they generate as a unified entity to help create value for the NX Group’s customers and stakeholders.

Sustainability Strategy with Climate Tech

Nippon Express Europe GmbH (NX Europe), a group company of the global Japanese logistics service provider Nippon Express Holdings, is set to realize the achievement of its sustainability goals in collaboration with the Climate Tech start-up, Cozero, based in Berlin.

In NX Group’s pursuit of reducing its CO₂ emissions by 50 percent by 2030 as compared to 2013 (Scope1,2), the parent company, Nippon Express Holdings Inc., submitted a letter of commitment to obtain Science Based Targets (SBT) certification in May 2023.

The collaboration between NX Europe and Cozero stemmed from Cozero’s comprehensive, transparent, and agile end-to-end solution that holistically considers both logistical and non-logistical emissions, which supports the forecasting and planning of decarbonization efforts.

Within a few weeks, Cozero’s Climate Action Platform was implemented at 30 European locations of the company for reporting Scope-1, Scope-2, and Scope-3 emissions. As a result, NX Europe is now able to implement customized local reduction strategies in alignment with SBT.

Climate Tech

Olaf Zimmlinghaus, Executive Director – General Affairs and Finance EMEA at NX Europe, stated, “Achieving our sustainability goals to combat climate change holds a special place within the NX Group. Our well-defined sustainability goals are not only deeply embedded in our operations but also subject to continuous monitoring of success. The data-driven solution provided by Cozero enables us to implement sustainability transformation into our corporate planning.”

Helen Tacke, Co-founder and CEO of Cozero GmbH, commented, “The NX Group is an exceptional example of the integration of financial and sustainability performances. Recognizing that corporate strategy and sustainability must walk hand in hand is pivotal for transformative success. We are proud to be able to contribute with data insights and measures through our software solution to support this synergy. “
