Paper E-Wrap on show in Japan

Japan is a country with many different facets and passions, but it is also one of the world’s birthplaces of e-commerce, with a mature market and well-defined trends. Japanese consumers know their mind: they prefer to have a large selection of goods, fast and accurate deliveries and, lastly, high quality packaging.

Sitma believes it can provide a tangible solution to these needs. This is why, at the end of summer 2022, it will be at Logis Tech Tokyo: a worthy conclusion to a very busy trade fair season. Sitma already took part in the Japanese trade fair in the past, though for the first time it will now display a machine in an operational configuration: the E-Wrap in the paper packaging version.

On the one hand, the September event confirms Sitma’s support for in-person trade fairs and, on the other hand its commitment to the Japanese market. It already operates in it through its Tokyo branch, which has been the focal point of its business strategies for over 30 years. It could not have been otherwise, since this area is a reference for the whole of the Far East, especially for the world of e-commerce logistics, which has undergone substantial growth in recent years.

Indeed, the value of the Japanese market has more than doubled in less than 10 years, going from ¥8.46 trillion in 2011 to ¥19.28 trillion in 2020 (over US$140 billion). It is now the fourth-largest market in the world after the United States, China and the UK. Apart from its economic value, the Japanese e-commerce market is one of the most crowded and challenging: indeed there are thousands of companies involved in the processes of buying, selling, sorting and delivering goods.

There is a widespread supply chain that works to support a very broad selection of products, ranging from interior design items to electronic devices, with differentiated purchases according to gender and age. However, data relating to purchasing habits is somewhat surprising. For example, unlike other areas of the world the demand for books is one of the predominant items and applies to both women and men (with 58% of the former resorting to online purchases and 55% of the latter).

Then come electronic devices, which are mainly purchased by men: 61% do so online, investing an average of ¥1,200 per month. In third place come fashion and clothing, which are instead mostly chosen by women: 70% of them order them online, investing around ¥1,000 every month. Such a demand for products significantly increases the level of skills required of companies working to support sorting and delivery hubs, both in terms of technology and the ability to generate efficiency.

In short, the challenge is huge. Along with the presence of numerous operators and the extensive supply of goods, the specific logic governing the market must be considered as well. Japanese society is indeed permeated by an ethical and working culture that minimises downtime. People’s lives are often organised according to “just-in-time” principles and the Japanese expect the same precision when placing orders online: a factor that further raises the bar of competition.

On a technological level, this means not only being able to have fast and high-performance machines but, for example, equally efficient weighing and tracking systems that work in sync with software packages to manage big data.

Paper E-Wrap: Western style and oriental spirit

Why did Sitma choose to take the E-Wrap to Logis Tech Tokyo? Because it is easy to use, though it brings huge benefits in terms of packaging speed, precision and quality of work. Plus, Japan is a rich country with consumers who, as in the most developed markets, are particularly attentive to the latest sustainability trends.

Sitma says the Paper E-Wrap is a perfectly tailored solution for the market from this point of view too, as it is a machine with a strong focus on sustainability. Indeed, it can pack according to an approach that takes into account the three dimensions of the object, following its volumes and limiting the use of wrapping material. The packaging also takes place by using heat-sealable paper, a material that ensures a very low environmental impact.

There is one last aspect that makes the Paper E-Wrap a winner: as mentioned, the Japanese market is largely based on the purchase and sale of small or medium-sized objects such as books, technological devices, video games and clothes. All these objects can be effectively packaged by means of heat-sealable paper, allowing for tailor-made packages that can withstand a weight of up to 2kg. These characteristics have already decreed the success of the Paper E-Wrap at European trade fairs Ipack-IMA and LogiMAT. The E-Wrap is now ready to conquer Japan as well.

Sitma will be at the next edition of Logis Tech Tokyo at stand 102 – Hall 3 from 13 to 16 September 2022.

Exporta launches new technologies

Exporta has installed two new pieces of technology at its Kinross manufacturing facility in the UK, which it says will be of huge benefit to its customer base.

Digital Printing Machine

Exporta says product branding is key to its customers – this could be five Euro Containers with a logo on the side or thousands of pallets with a logo and sequential numbering. Exporta has long been offering this service, but has installed a new digital printing machine in-house, meaning it can provide product printing quicker and to a higher standard.

Head of technology and product development, John Wilkin, has been involved with this project from the start and is delighted to see his plans come to fruition: “We know how important branding can be, so to make it easier for customers to get this from Exporta has been an important goal. This investment is something that will immediately add value to our offering.”

The new machine, installed at the end of June 2022, is up and running and ready to go. It’s designed to work on any plastic product with a large enough surface area to print on, meaning it will work with the majority of products in the Exporta range.

The benefit of branding goods include brand exposure, identification, and the prevention of lost or stolen goods. Sending out goods within branded containers or pallets provides a strong opportunity for additional advertising and brand exposure. Details such as a phone number and a web address can also be added. This also helps to ensure goods aren’t lost or stolen as they are clearly marked. In terms of identification, printing can be used to add things like sequential numbering or colour coding to products to aid in picking and general warehouse operations.

Pallet Load Testing

How often have you been on the cusp of purchasing a new pallet for your system, but you’ve been unsure how the pallet will perform with your standard goods load? This no longer needs to be a concern, as Exporta has installed a load testing machine to test your load on a potential pallet.

Exporta claims that this is a unique offering to the UK market and something that has taken months of planning. The system allows Exporta to measure the performance of a pallet on racking and on a forklift. The width of the racking can be tailored to match the racking the pallet will be used on. Exporta can test both racking pallets as well as testing nestable pallets for their dynamic load and it can then provide an approved report on the results to give you confidence when you’re purchasing a pallet for your warehouse or shipping system.

Exporta measures the deflection of the pallet with your load over a 24-hour period, and then measures the time it takes to return to its original form once the load has been removed. It can then ensure that the pallet meets the regulation deflection tolerance as required by ISO8611.

Future-proof packaging investment for British seed firm

A £2.2 million investment in automated packaging facilities will see one of the UK’s largest growers and processors of grass seed increase efficiency, quality control and staff safety.

Barenbrug UK, the Bury St Edmunds grass-breeding company with a customer base that ranges from dairy farmers and local authorities to Premier League football clubs and Ryder Cup golf courses, produces up to 4,500 tonnes of seed every year.

“Our forecasts suggest demand for our UK-specific grass varieties will continue to grow,” says Nicole Watkins, Commercial Operations Manager for Barenbrug UK, “particularly in the agricultural sector where post-Brexit reforms are likely to favour farming practices where grass plays a more important role.

“Outdated packaging facilities simply hold us back and stop the company from reaching its full potential, in terms of quality and throughput.

“Added to that is the opportunity this project provides to make a parallel investment in our team of dedicated staff. By increasing the level of automation, we not only improve their welfare by reducing the amount of manual handling necessary, but also allow us to focus on upskilling – equipping the team with valuable new skills and new prospects within the company.”

The company began making plans for the new line in June 2020, researching options and requirements before deciding to partner with REM Project Management and Symach Barry-Wehmiller Packaging.

Organised to fit in around Barenbrug’s highly seasonal processing and manufacturing schedule, the project is due for completion by December 2023 – giving Barenbrug UK the most up-to-date facilities within the parent company’s 22-country global operation.

“This project sees us making an investment that effectively future-proofs our facilities here in Suffolk,” says managing director Paul Johnson. “It’s exciting to be installing such a modern, innovative new line within our Suffolk headquarters.

“Once completed, it will allow us to move forward with confidence as we seek to continue our leading position as a responsible, forward-thinking grass breeder, firmly committed to serving our diverse UK customer base.”

Kite launches large letter postal boxes

Slim corrugated boxes offer rigid protection to small items while fitting into the Royal Mail’s PiP Large Letter specification. This minimises and regulates postal costs, enabling a business to maximise their overall profits.

Kite Packaging is now offering its brown large letter boxes in five different sizes to cater toward everything from gift cards and small jewellery items to A4 documents or certificates. The sturdy construction provides greater resistance to the normal knocks and bumps that occur during transit when compared to bubble mailers or envelopes.

Additionally, the cardboard boxes are an eco-friendly alternative to plastic mailers and can be kerbside recycled by a customer. The flaps fold inwards and can be secured with a small portion of paper tape to form a fully plastic-free, sustainable and recyclable packaging solution.

Green credentials are attractive to a modern-day eco-conscious customer. The ease and efficiency of the order also enhances the customer experience since the slim letterbox design allows the package to be safely posted even if the recipient is not in.

Kite says the compact and lightweight boxes with hinged lids are an aesthetic way of displaying products, making them highly appropriate for the ecommerce gift industry. The eco-friendly composition and economic benefits confirm their suitability for growing businesses seeking professional packaging.

ORBIS showcases sustainable packaging at FachPack

At this year’s FachPack, ORBIS Europe is presenting sustainable and durable transport packaging solutions for different industries (September 27th-29th in Nuremberg, hall 6, booth 316). That includes PlastiCorr, the first reusable brown box replacement for automated packaging lines as well as plastic pallets in a new design for the food and beverage industry. More show highlights are the UN-certified dangerous goods boxes IonPak (pictured) and foldable large containers (FLCs) such as the GitterPak and XXLPaks for automotive and industrial applications.

“Sustainability has become an important part of today’s supply chains. Reusable transport packaging follows the circular economy concept – in manufacturing, use and recycling. By making the switch to reusables, companies can reduce their environmental impact significantly. We will highlight all that at our FachPack booth,” says Christian Hemming, Technical Director EMEA at ORBIS Europe.

The PlastiCorr reusable plastic box is a direct replacement for corrugated fibre boxes with identical functionality and enhanced features. This sustainable solution works seamlessly with existing automated packaging lines and is ideal for food, beverage and FMCG applications. When compared to conventional single-use boxes, the patented design of PlastiCorr allows the plastic boxes to be reused over 70 times. In that way, companies reduce water and energy consumption, the amount of solid waste as well long-term costs.

Security and cleanliness with plastic pallets

In the area of food and beverage transportation, ORBIS showcases two of its reusable plastic pallets in a new design: the German Pallet (1180 x 1265 mm) and the Spanish Pallet (1120 x 1420 mm). Both are designed to convey rigid packaging, such as glass and plastic bottles or aluminium and steel cans in a secure way.

The new flow-through hygienic design allows for improved automated and manual washing. At the same time, the pallets’ two-piece snap-fit design with double wall thickness pallets blocks makes them more durable to handling impacts. These pallets can be combined with layer pads and top frames to create secure, stable unit loads for transport.

The dangerous goods container IonPak is UN-approved to transport solid dangerous goods (Packing Group II), such as lithium-ion batteries, and certified in accordance with RID/ADR (UN4H2/UN50H). The customised packaging consists of a robust foldable large container with European standard footprints (1200 x 800 / 1200 x 1000 / 1600 x 1200 mm) and a custom inner packaging solution optimised to protect dangerous goods. At the booth, ORBIS will feature a customer version of the IonPak.

For use in automotive and other manufacturing industries, ORBIS is showcasing the foldable large containers (FLC) GitterPak and XXLPaks. With a 900kg weight capacity and a European standard footprint of 1200 x 800 mm, the GitterPak is a sustainable, rust-free and foldable alternative to steel gitterboxes. The robust wall design allows for secure stacking of containers (1+5 static, 1+2 dynamic).

The XXLPak containers in extended length are designed to transport even long and hard-to-fit components. The inch footprints are compatible with European standard footprints (approx. 1600 x 1200 mm / 2000 x 1200 mm). All FLCs are manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using a structural foam-moulding process for increased durability.

Emerson actuators offer superior features

Emerson has launched its new AVENTICS Series Servo Profile Advanced (SPRA) Electric Actuators, a line of precise and highly repeatable rod-style cylinders.

While only one electric actuator screw type is typically available in the market, the SPRA actuators offer three screw technologies. These include a precision ball screw, which provides exceptional durability and accuracy for applications that need optimal quality or throughput, a cost-effective lead screw option and roller screws for precision, speed and heavy loads.

This versatile range of rod-style cylinders lets users in the automotive, food and beverage, packaging and life sciences industries configure electric actuators to meet exacting application requirements, such as improved sustainability or efficiency, rather than settle for standard approximation.

“With four sizes and multiple mounting options, the AVENTICS Series SPRA Electric Actuators are cost-effective, high-performance solutions that cover most machine automation applications,” said Linda Schwartzen, product marketing manager with Emerson’s AVENTICS actuator business. “Compliance with the ISO-15552 standard offers a wide range of accessories and our online calculation tool and configurator ensures the appropriate implementation and can meet exacting application requirements.”

Interconnected online tools allow users to instantly size and customize electric actuators, with no software installation or registration necessary. The configuration includes a direct download of CAD files, which comprises all elements of the configured solution, such as electric cylinder, accessories, mounting options and motor adapter.

Delta Helps Plastic Packaging Manufacturer Achieve Control

A manufacturer of plastic bags for food packaging that operates a factory in Poland has been using Delta automation technology on its production lines for years. The company has recently expanded their facility and installed additional machines. As a result of the expansion, the manufacturer decided they had too many machines to continue monitoring and controlling them individually. The company needed to deploy a centralized control and management.

The vacuum and high-barrier plastic bags produced at the plant are used in the food and beverage industry. Several heat sealing machines and conveyer systems were in operation at the factory before the expansion. Until now, there was no way to collect and analyze production data from the machines from a single location. A new, customized solution would need to have the ability to collect and aggregate data from all machines, including the new ones, and generate the corresponding reports and graphs.

Since the manufacturer was already using Delta automation hardware, Delta’s DIAView SCADA solution was an obvious choice to implement centralized control and visualization. Delta’s trusted partner in Poland, Induprogress, was able to deploy a powerful combination of DIAView SCADA and SQLServer to collect production logs and statistics and aggregate that data inside a central database. Induprogress has been the official and exclusive distributor of Delta Electronics industrial automation solutions in Poland since 2010.

The system implemented for the packaging factory allows users to choose individual machines and generate reports that span the selected time period without requiring an operator go to the physical machine and use the HMI. The reports can be generated from the factory’s control room or anywhere else within the plant. The functionality of each machine’s HMI is now also available from within DIAView, allowing remote control and operation. The DIAView system accesses the production information hosted in the SQL database to generate charts and reports.

In addition, ASDA-A2 servo drives have been installed to enable the bag making and filling processes. VFD-E series Delta motor drives come into play for sealing tasks.
The manufacturer now uses the new DIAView SCADA system to control individual machines and monitor the production line. Trend graphs are available and operators can check for anomalies and generate reports. Some of the metrics available include total machine running hours, average production speed, and machine efficiency. Users can receive different levels of permissions and an operator log stores the history of each user’s actions, making it possible to monitor operator performance. The software interface has also been localized into Polish to make operation even easier for local workers.

The project involved close coordination between the customer, Delta, and Induprogress. Delta offered the same high level of technical support during implementation that Induprogress has come to rely on already over the last decade of collaboration. Of course, implementing DIAView was very straightforward since the Delta automation equipment already in operation at the facility was completely compatible. The benefits were so obvious for this project, no other solutions were even considered. Should the customer install more machines in the future, they plan to acquire additional DIAView licenses and incorporate them into the existing system.

“This is a perfect example of how Delta’s broad portfolio of industrial automation solutions can really benefit new and existing customers,” said Ufuk Ozer, Product Manager at Delta Electronics. “The breadth of our portfolio allows a factory choose Delta products almost exclusively, like the customer did in this case. That makes things a lot easier when it’s time to implement a monitoring and control solution like DIAView. Everything is compatible right out of the box.”

Konica Minolta unveils high-end label press

Konica Minolta has launched a label press, the AccurioLabel 400, as it accelerates its presence in label, packaging, and embellishment markets. Already European market leader in digital label presses with 28% market share in 2021, first details have been revealed for the machine that will target mid- to high-volume label converters and provide affordable top-quality digital printing.

The first public showing of the AccurioLabel 400 took place recently at Konica Minolta’s European Labels & Packaging Exhibition in Madrid. The official sales start is planned for Q1 in 2023.

The Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 400 will also be fully upgradeable for AccurioLabel 230 customers who are expanding their own business in the growing markets of label production and packaging. Important new developments include the ability to expand applications with white toner, improved productivity with superfast print speeds of up to 39.9 metres per minute, and further running cost reductions thanks to even more durable parts life, as well as enhanced print quality. It is available in 4- and 5-colour options.

Konica Minolta’s Intelligent Quality Care and the IQ-520 will increase usability and automation with the AccurioLabel 400, hence customers’ label production will benefit from higher levels of control. Intelligent Quality Care enables real time control of white toner opacity, colour stability control, as well as automatic calibration, density adjustments and profile creation.

With a main scan capability at 1200 dpi (equivalent to 3600 dpi), the Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 400 single-pass toner production press prints on paper widths up to 330mm or 250mm.

Multiple touch panel monitors in three different areas of the label press enable intuitive operation and is easy to use for operators, eliminating the need for extensive user training. Tasks that were time-consuming on analogue machines can be performed quickly and accurately in delivering stable printing quality.

This year, Konica Minolta has celebrated a 1000th installation shipment for its highly successful AccurioLabel 230 toner digital printing press – less than seven years since entering the labels market.

“The AccurioLabel 400 adds to our broad range of innovative print solutions to enable digital transformation that also include workflow, software and process automation, and cloud solutions as part of the drive to the smart factory,” said Carsten Bamberg, Business Development Manager, Professional Printing Group at Konica Minolta Europe. “The digitisation of the label industry will continue to accelerate with double-digit predicted growth annually. Opportunity is everywhere. It just takes a spark to make it happen.

“Unveiling the AccurioLabel 400 at our European Labels & Packaging Exhibition provides us with another perfect opportunity to help our customers rethink possibilities and ignite printing. Working in partnership as a global player and partner of choice, we are constantly rethinking print and helping customers to improve and grow in partnership.”

He added: “With an estimated 7,000-plus label converters in the mid- and high-volume markets, we feel confident of capturing significant market share with our AccurioLabel 400 that will have an extremely competitive total cost of ownership.”

Jon Hiscock, Head of Production & Industrial Print at Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd also commented: “The UK is one of the larger label markets in Europe and there’s lots of opportunities for this product as digital label production continues to grow. The AccurioLabel 400 gives us a massive opportunity to speak to existing customers about the benefits it offers, as well as speaking to new customers as we continue to grow our professional print business here in the UK.”
