Logistics Labour Crunch

With the logistics sector bracing for continued labour shortages in 2025, businesses are rethinking how they attract and retain warehouse staff. Pallet Trucks UK, suppliers of manual handling equipment, argues that better tools – not just better pay – may be the overlooked factor in creating safer, more appealing workplaces.

As the industry battles with high turnover and an ageing workforce, the physical demands placed on employees are drawing increased scrutiny. The latest government data shows nearly 40% of UK logistics businesses are struggling to fill vacancies. While automation garners attention, many warehouses still rely heavily on manual processes – and it’s here that equipment upgrades can have the most immediate impact.

“Better conditions start with better equipment,” says Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Trucks UK. “If you’re asking someone to lift, push, and transport heavy loads all day, you have a duty to ensure they’re using tools that minimise strain and reduce injury risk. It’s a matter respect, efficiency, and staff wellbeing.”

The company has seen growing demand for ergonomically designed pallet trucks and scissor lift tables that reduce physical stress on workers. These pallets not only help to avoid workplace injuries – a leading cause of absence in logistics – but can also serve as a valuable retention tool.

According to the British Safety Council, musculoskeletal injuries remain one of the most common reasons for long-term sickness among warehouse staff. Providing safer, easier-to-use handling solutions shows a tangible investment in the workforce – which can make all the difference in an industry where margins are tight, and staff loyalty is often hard-won.

“As competition for labour intensifies, we’re finding that companies who invest in the wellbeing of their warehouse teams see better morale, fewer injuries, and greater staff retention,” adds Chesworth. “It’s becoming a competitive necessity, particularly for businesses that cannot afford to compete with industry giants when it comes to pay.”

For businesses looking to future-proof their workforce, investing in the right manual handling equipment could just be the smartest move they make in 2025.

Compact helpers for storing and transporting goods

Linde Material Handling is making it easier to maneuver in confined spaces in logistics, retail and production with new compact double stackers and a pallet truck. All vehicles are optionally equipped with an active foot protection guard to prevent injuries. The pallet truck offers an ergonomic lift for order picking that is gentle on the back and knees.

“In settings such as supermarkets, warehouses or production environments, space is almost always an issue. The compact design of the new Linde double stackers offers a significant advantage for short- to medium-distance transportation, as well as for tasks such as truck loading and unloading, order picking, and the restocking of supermarket shelves,” says Marc Castro, Senior Strategy and Portfolio Manager for Warehouse Trucks at Linde Material Handling.

The Linde D06 to D10 models, which can simultaneously move loads of 0.6, 0.8 or 1.0 tons on the free lift and an additional 1.0 ton on the initial lift, are available with different battery versions to suit specific requirements. In versions equipped with a compact lithium-ion battery, the distance between the chassis and fork face (l2 dimension) is notably reduced: The Linde D06 has a length of just 592 mm. The latest addition to the range is the Linde D08 M double stacker with a mono-mast. This model offers a load capacity of 0.8 tons on the free lift and 1.0 tons on the initial lift, with a lift height of 1,590 mm. Its compact design, enabled by the inclusion of a compact lithium-ion battery, makes it an ideal choice for settings such as retail environments, where it can be used for transporting goods from the storage area to the sales floor and for stocking shelves. The mono-mast provides an extended view of the load and the truck’s surroundings, enabling the driver to work more efficiently and safely. All vehicles in the new double stacker series feature a five-point contact configuration with a centered drive wheel, ensuring optimal stability when driving over uneven ground or ramps. The special Linde OptiLift mast control allows operators to precisely control the lifting speed via a lever on the tiller head.

Stacker

The new pedestrian pallet truck Linde T16 L has been developed to improve comfort when picking orders in e-commerce or when restocking shelves in supermarkets. The ergonomic lift is designed specifically with these requirements in mind. Controls on the tiller and on the sides of the truck allow the forks to be raised to a maximum working height of 675 millimeters, enabling the operator to place the goods on the truck in a position that is gentle on the back.

Both the double stackers and the pallet truck are extremely compact, measuring only 1,742 mm in length (l1 dimension) and 720 mm in width. This makes them even more maneuverable than their predecessors. The vehicles are available with either lithium-ion or lead-acid battery power options. The lithium-ion batteries, in turn, are offered tray based or as compact version, the latter allowing for a particularly compact truck design. The powerful drive motor provides ample power and provides up to 20 percent climbing ability. The latest addition to the safety features is the optional active foot protection guard. It senses contact and automatically stops or stops and reverses the truck. Standard features include the low chassis skirt, which prevents the operator’s feet from being trapped under the truck, and the low-set tiller arm, which ensures that the operator is at a safe distance from the truck. For added convenience, the autolift function is available. This equipment option automatically lowers the forks during loading or automatically lifts the forks when removing parcels from the pallet on the forks, thus saving the operator time.

Pallet Trucks for Loading/Unloading

With the T16 P to T20 P models, Linde Material Handling (MH) is launching two new compact pallet trucks with a foldable operator platform. Offering 1.6 and 2.0 tons load capacity, respectively, and a width of just 720mm, the vehicles are designed for use in a wide range of applications and are ideally suited for working in confined spaces. Thanks to speeds of up to 8.5 km/h, gradeability of up to 20 percent, and new comfort and safety features, they enable efficient fast transportation of goods over short and medium distances as well as loading and unloading operations. The pallet trucks are available with a choice of either lead-acid or the latest generation of lithium-ion batteries. Fleet management and connectivity ensure productive operation and effective service.

“Confined spaces present a particular challenge when it comes to loading and unloading trucks as well as in adjacent goods distribution areas,” says Peter Klug, Product Manager Warehouse Technology Germany at Linde MH. “When operating between closely-spaced pallets on the truck loading area or along unclear routes through cargo handling zones, drivers need to have their equipment one hundred percent under control. Accordingly, they appreciate compact, ergonomic vehicles that enable them to work safely and quickly,” explains Klug. With the Linde T16 P and the Linde T20 P, there are now two newly developed vehicles available for the fast movement of goods at the truck ramp and over short to medium transport distances. “The foldable platform allows employees to drive the truck, which saves time and energy. Wherever pallets must be manoeuvred with centimetre precision, the platform and side bars can be folded back up in no time at all,” explains the product manager.

In the Linde portfolio, the Linde T16 P and T20 P models are the link between pedestrian-only vehicles and the recently introduced, high-performance models with foldable or fixed stand-on platform: Their performance is designed to meet the requirements of light to medium-duty applications, while at the same time featuring premium comfort and safety equipment. Additionally, the new trucks are available with various energy options and state-of-the-art on-board electronics and connectivity equipment.

Customized for specific applications

The 1.3 kW three-phase AC motor accelerates the vehicles to a maximum speed of 8.5 km/h; however, speed limits can also be set via various parameters. In difficult situations, the automatic booster effect provides higher torque when additional power is needed, e.g. when driving out of a pothole or pulling out a foil-wrapped pallet that is stuck in the truck. On slopes, the pallet trucks have plenty of reserve under their non-deformable engine hood thanks to gradeability of 15 percent (Linde T16 P) and 13 percent (Linde T20 P) when loaded, and 20 percent when unloaded. Furthermore, the electric steering system allows smooth and precise control even under full load, while the five-point contact configuration with a centred drive wheel and sprung castor wheels keeps the unit stable during transport. Optional integrated onboard chargers free drivers from having to rely on fixed charging stations.

Increased comfort and safety

Additionally, the trucks offer further optimizations with regard to safety and comfort. The sideguards, which keep the operator safely within the chassis contours, are more robustly designed and padded on the new models. The special Linde tiller head now has an activation angle of 65°, which is convenient for drivers with shorter stature. The stand-on platform has been enlarged to 663mm and, with a height of 162mm, allows easy access for the driver. Suspended and made of non-slip rubber, it also dampens vibrations and shocks, thus creating the basis for fatigue-free working. A new option is the metal accessory bar, to which work lights, scanners or the Linde Blue Spot can be attached. Another equipment option is the load guard which prevents the load from sliding toward the operator.

Linde Material Handling GmbH, a KION Group company, is a globally operating manufacturer of forklift trucks and warehouse trucks, and a solutions and service provider for intralogistics. With a sales and service network that spans more than 100 countries, the company is represented in all major regions around the world.

Don’t neglect the essential hand pallet truck

Regular hand pallet truck maintenance not only helps to extend the performance and life of your trucks, but also protects the wellbeing of your team and, ultimately, the HSE regulations of your company, says Tony Sharpe, Head of Service Development and Hand Pallet Truck After Sales at Toyota Material Handling.

Designed to make moving palletised loads easier, safer and faster, manual hand pallet trucks – sometimes referred to as HPTs, pump trucks, pallet jacks or pallet lifters – play a key role in countless warehouses, retail outlets and manufacturing sites all over the world.

But it can be all too easy to take these humble, apparently simple pieces of equipment for granted. As a result, some companies do not realise the extent to which their operation relies on their hand pallet truck until they find themselves without it due to a breakdown.

We all know the frustration and stress arising from delays to the production process or hold-ups in the supply chain caused by the failure of materials handling equipment, but when essential tools that are in near-constant use, such as hand pallet trucks, malfunction it is not only a company’s ability to meet deadlines that suffers. A business’s reputation can be negatively impacted too – and that usually leads to reduced profitability.

Toyota has developed a dedicated national team of Hand Pallet Truck Specialists specifically to keep these vital workhorses safe and performing to the highest standards at all times.

Its dedicated team of Hand Pallet Truck Specialists operate nationally to enable preventative maintenance, safety inspections or repairs that are required to be carried out quickly and efficiently.

Whether you use a single hand pallet truck or several across multiple locations or at one site, Toyota says its dedicated team will ensure that your productivity remains high by arranging and undertaking a regular servicing and maintenance plan that fits your precise needs and work patterns.

Hand pallet trucks must be routinely inspected and maintained to comply with health and safety regulations. Specialists ensure that customers are operating in accordance with all the relevant regulations, including Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98)

Regular maintenance is also essential for the safety of your workforce and a robust service programme will identify any potential issues that may compromise the safety of the hand pallet truck and its operators. It will also reassure your team that the equipment they are using is in the best possible condition.

A structured service schedule from Toyota provides cost transparency and, because fees are agreed up-front, budget forecasting becomes far simpler. Toyota says its ‘Pallet Truck Plus’ is a hassle-free hand pallet truck rental option with low monthly costs on a two-year agreement.

While a strict servicing and maintenance regime is the best way of preventing significant downtime – with all the cost and disruption to a business that can mean –  truck build quality is also a major factor in maintaining operational efficiency.

Manufactured at a dedicated production facility in Sweden, the BT Lifter range of hand pallet trucks from Toyota Material Handling comes with a 99-year functional guarantee on the fork frame and a 5-year guarantee on the pump unit.

With their built-in sustainability, models in the BT Lifter range set the highest standards in hand pallet truck durability, strength and performance, says Toyota. Capable of lifting and moving loads weighing up to 2.3 tonnes, in work-cycle tests BT Lifter HPTs have been shown to deliver optimum performance for up to five times as long as other trucks on the market.

But, importantly, Toyota’s HPT Specialists are trained to work on any make of hand pallet truck – not just Toyota models – which is essential for those customers that operate mixed fleets. Furthermore, to keep downtime as well as costs to a minimum Toyota’s Specialists carry out maintenance work at your facility.

Taking truck maintenance seriously means that any potential problems can be identified before they become more serious and, over time, this not only helps to extend the performance and life of your trucks, but also protects the wellbeing of your team.

Yale launches new platform pallet truck

Yale’s new MPX Series platform pallet trucks offer impressive ergonomics designed around the needs of the operator.

The MP20-30X trucks are ideal for medium- to high-intensity applications and can manoeuvre comfortably even in the tightest of working environments. A range of innovative options enables the MPX Series trucks to be tailored to the specific nuances of an operation.

When it comes to maintaining high levels of productivity, comfortable employees can make all the difference to a company’s operation. The machine should be able to work in perfect harmony with its operator, requiring minimal effort to execute the task at hand. The new MPX Series platform pallet trucks from Yale Europe Materials Handling embodies this philosophy, offering impressive ergonomics and exceptional manoeuvrability.

“The Yale MP20-30X platform pallet trucks have been designed around the needs of the operator during horizontal transportation of loads,” explained Gianbattista Scaramuzza, Senior Product Strategy Manager, Warehouse Products at Yale. “Even in the most congested of spaces, these new low lift trucks can work effortlessly. For businesses looking to reduce operator fatigue and increase productivity, the MPX Series trucks are the perfect addition to a fleet.”

Ideal for medium- to high-intensity operations, the MP20-30X can be used in the loading and unloading of trailers, working around the dockside, order picking and cross docking.
The MPX Series tiller head has an ergonomically shaped handle, fitted with an integral hand guard, and will automatically return to the vertical position when released by the operator. The large butterfly control buttons are engineered to support natural thumb movement, with all dash panel components within easy reach.

Rather than forcing the operators to adapt to the same driving style, the MPX Series trucks feature driver mode selection to suit different operators’ skills.

MPX Series trucks are available in three configurations. For operations managers who would prefer the versatility of switching between ride-on and pedestrian mode, the MPX Series is available with a foldable platform and side arms for support. There are also two fixed platform options: one with permanent rear protection for the operator, and one with permanent side protection.

To meet the needs of specific applications, a foot sensor can be installed on trucks with permanent side protection, which will only allow the truck to be driven with an operator on-board.
“The operator platform on the new Yale MP20-30X Series trucks is designed to support a number of comfortable driving positions, while the rubber floor mat delivers extra grip while in transit,” explained Gianbattista.

The MPX Series trucks have a number of new features that allow operators to move loads smoothly and efficiently. The new, robust design of the foldable side arms provide stability and security when the truck is in motion, while also reducing maintenance costs and improving productivity.

As well as its ability to work in tight spaces, the MPX Series trucks can transfer loads across extended distances and offer a wide capacity range of 2 to 3 tonnes. The new fork design is available in a range of lengths, with customers also able to choose from two fork heights to suit their specific needs. The extended forks option allows the MP20-30X to transport up to two pallets or three Europallets crosswise per journey.

Operation managers can choose the power solution that best fits their needs with lead acid and lithium-ion batteries offered for the MP20-30X trucks. Its durable design combined with a low energy consumption helps keep ongoing running costs under control.

The MPX Series can be tailored to applications with a range of additional options. A smart lift option can elevate loads and begin transporting pallets before its load arms are at full lift, eliminating the need for the operator to continually hold down the button.

A height adjustable tiller is suitable for a wide range of operations. Simply by adjusting the position of the tiller, operators can adapt the truck into a driving position that they find comfortable.

For low-light environments, a working light package on the Yale MPX Series illuminates the load area. A cold store solution enables the MPX Series trucks to cope with temperatures as low as -30°C without any effect on its performance.

“We’re really proud to unveil our new MPX Series trucks. Yale has worked hard to identify features in which we can offer comfort and ease to the operator to help them be as productive as possible during a shift in a busy environment. We believe the MP20-30X accomplishes this and would be an asset to any warehouse operation,” concluded Gianbattista.

New Platform Pallet Trucks are “Lithium-ion Ready”

Three new “lithium-ion ready” Platform Pallet Truck models, ideal for maximising productivity in intense industry applications have been launched by Hyster Europe.

“Whether it’s cross docking, loading and unloading trailers or order picking in the warehouse, the new lithium-ion ready Platform Pallet Trucks get the job done.” says Monica Radavelli, Product Manager – Warehouse, for Hyster Europe. “Capable of lifting up to 3 tonnes, these dependable Pallet Trucks are equally suited to tough dockside conditions.”

The new series includes the P2.0S, P2.5S and P3.0S models and replaces the current P2.0S truck. They feature an updated fork design, a robust base frame, steel battery cover and improved ground clearance of pull rods. For the operator, the new models are available with either a folding platform and new side arms, or a fixed platform with new side, or rear, protection design.

“In many operations space is at a premium, so models with a foldable, rather than fixed, platform are a popular choice and support manoeuvrability in narrow aisle widths or congested areas,” explains Monica. “Other applications may want to optimise productivity by specifying a truck with longer forks, allowing transportation of two pallets per journey, or more, if handled crossways.”

Meanwhile, competitive travel speeds and a range of different driving modes support operational productivity, with a choice of fixed or adjustable tiller further supporting operators of the trucks with a foldable platform. Adjustable scooter control is also available for fixed platform models.

The truck itself is designed to be ‘lithium-ion ready’, with a controller that automatically recognises the chemistry of the battery (lithium-ion vs. lead-acid) so there is no need to change any parameters to enable effective battery management if lithium-ion suits the application. Top and side battery charging options are available.

The “lithium-ion ready” Pallet Trucks can be further customised with an extended range of innovative options available. Depending on the specific model, these may include a coasting function, Hyster Intelligent Lift, soft lowering, a foot sensor, key or keypad access, a cold store option, and a range of lights. A choice of two fork heights – 85mm and 75mm – enables handling of both standard and low-profile disposable pallets, and a variety of fork lengths up to 2850 mm are available.

The new Platform Pallet Truck series is built with the same level of toughness and reliability found across the wide range of Hyster warehouse equipment. Heavy-duty components and a reliable electrical system contribute to a low cost of ownership, while ease of service access and diagnostics helps maximise truck uptime. Responsive support is offered via the global network of trusted local Hyster distribution partners.

Last year Hyster announced the launch of new J7.0–9.0XNL forklift series with fully integrated lithium-ion batteries.

No-Cheat Seat Belts on Forklifts Introduced

No-cheat seat belts on forklifts is a new feature by Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks which may be a game changer in avoiding deaths in potentially tragic forklift truck incidents.

According to the latest figures from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, tipping accidents are the single most common cause of operator fatalities (42%) among forklift operators. In almost every case, the driver was ‘mousetrapped’ between the truck and the ground, causing massive trauma to the head or upper body.

According to Stewart Gosling of Red Diamond Distribution, exclusive importers of Mitsubishi forklift trucks: “These accidents occur because, as a forklift tips over, the operator’s overwhelming instinct is to try and jump clear. Seemingly, no amount of training or experience can overcome the flight instinct..with fatal consequences. Sadly, if the operator was to stay in place, they would walk away with bruising and little more.

“However, actually keeping them seated has proved an insurmountable challenge… until now.”

Many operators simply can’t be bothered to buckle up, especially in on-off applications. At the same time, supervisors tire of reminding staff to comply. Even where safety systems are fitted, operators routinely attempt to trick them by fastening their seat belts permanently behind them.

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks has overcome this issue on its latest range of EDiA electric trucks with a seat belt compliance feature: a switchable option that allows the employer to ensure wearing a seat belt is mandatory.

“Sometimes, the simple stuff can have the greatest impact,” sums up Stewart Gosling. “We may not be able to change an operator’s natural instincts but now we can make a life-or-death difference by no-Cheat seat belts to ensure they are worn.”
