Vector eCool: First Technology of its Kind

The all-electric, zero-direct-emission Carrier Transicold Vector® eCool has become the first technology of its kind available to UK customers without the requirement for Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) testing. After a detailed two-year process, Carrier Transicold has paved the way for customers to maximise the sustainability potential of its cutting-edge trailer technology. Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier Global Corporation, a global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

Launched in 2020, Carrier Transicold’s fully autonomous Vector eCool was a genuine industry first. However, being at the cutting edge meant there were no standardised, technical regulations related to the system’s axle regeneration technology, so every new unit had to undergo IVA testing. Working closely with Gray & Adams, the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and following a rigorous evaluation programme at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), the Vector eCool is now the first of its type that does not require this time-consuming and costly procedure.

“When Carrier Transicold broke new ground with the Vector eCool, axle-regeneration technology in this configuration was something the industry hadn’t seen before,” said Scott Dargan, Managing Director UK and Northern Europe, Carrier Transicold. “We understood that it would take close collaboration with our partners and government agencies to get to this point and it has been two years of hard work. But just as we were the first to launch this type of all-electric technology, we are proud to be leading the way once again, setting an important industry benchmark for accessible, sustainable solutions that will create a roadmap for others to follow.”

The technology behind the Carrier Transicold Vector eCool is a sophisticated energy recovery and storage system that converts wasted kinetic energy generated by the trailer axle and brakes into electricity, which is then stored in a battery pack to power the refrigeration unit. This loop creates a fully autonomous system that produces no direct carbon dioxide (CO2) or particulate emissions and is PIEK certified to operate below the 60 dB(A) noise limit.

Vector eCool trailers are now operating in the UK and Europe. With the new approval for use, the total number in operation can now be rapidly and easily accelerated, offering the unit’s significant emissions savings to an even wider number of potential users – helping to contribute to Carrier’s Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) goal to reduce its customers’ carbon footprint by more than one gigaton by 2030.

Thermo King launches new UT-R portfolio

Thermo King has announced its new UT-R undermount refrigeration systems, which will be a feature of its presence at the IAA Transportation 2022 show in Hannover, Germany.

The new UT-R portfolio includes single- and multi-temperature refrigeration units for undermount applications on rigid trucks, drawbar trailers and highloaders. New design and applied technologies deliver increased efficiency, better reliability and durability, and significantly lower noise than the legacy range, meeting the needs of customers operating in inner-city, city-to-to-city, pharmaceutical and airport catering distributions.

Thermo King UT-R units are available as NRMM Stage V compliant diesel-powered systems, or in Hybrid version. The UT-R Hybrid can seamlessly switch between diesel and electric mode to reduce emissions and fuel consumption and increase flexibility of operations allowing the trucks to enter cities’ low and ultra-low emission zones.

“Multi-drop operations in city distribution, long distance transport of goods and raising ambient temperatures are driving the customer need for reliable, high cooling capacity refrigeration units to ensure the safety of their cargo,” said Davide Previsdomini, product manager Truck at Thermo King. “We designed the brand-new UT-R units with these factors in mind and added more features that not only offer the highest cooling capacity in the segment but do so with reduced noise and lower cost of ownership for transporters.”

The new UT-R platform is based on a new compressor from Thermo King T-Series units contributing to highest cooling capacity in this market segment according to ATP standards (Accord Transport Perrisable), and lower TCO for customers. Featuring an Electronic Throttling Valve (ETV) as standard. The UT-R units operate with reduced engine speeds for optimised performance and lower noise.

“The new UT-R units are 3dB(A) quieter than the incumbent range,” said Previsdomini. “In real life, this difference means that the noise perception of two new UT-R units operating side-by-side equals the noise generated by a single predecessor unit.”

The new design also facilitates better access to serviceable components and contributes to extended maintenance intervals. Combined with the increased reliability, this translates into up to 40% lower service costs for the transporters when compared to the legacy units.

For ease of installation and optimized chassis space, the new UT-R units are also smaller when compared to the predecessor range, with width reduced by 200mm. The weight of the unit is also even 40kg lower allowing customers to carry more cargo payload during every delivery journey.

Refrigerated lorry fleet electrified to reduce emissions

FRIGOBLOCK, one of the leading suppliers of transport refrigeration units in Europe and brand of Thermo King®, collaborated with BIOGROS, a Luxembourgish wholesaler and distributor of bio products and part of Oikopolis Group, put the first fully electric refrigerated truck on Luxembourg’s roads. As part of the project, FRIGOBLOCK equipped the prototype MAN eTGM truck with the inverter driven FK25i refrigeration unit. BIOGROS calculates that in the first eight months of operations they saved over 2900 litres of diesel equalling to approximately 9.4 tonnes of CO2, compared to similar diesel-fuelled truck in their fleet. By end of the year, they expect to save a total of approximately 22 tonnes of CO2, more than 20% of their entire fleet’s emissions.

Environmental responsibility and operating in a sustainable manner are part of BIOGROS’ culture. In late 2020, as part of their strategy to reduce CO2 emissions and decrease fuel consumption, BIOGROS decided to expand its distribution fleet with a new refrigerated e-truck, the first one to operate on Luxembourg roads. To find the most efficient, electric refrigeration unit for the prototype MAN eTGM truck, BIOGROS reached out to Gradius, Thermo King’s official dealer in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The truck required a refrigeration unit, which could work fully on electric power and that could be connected and powered by the truck’s main battery with low impact on the vehicle’s operational range. FRIGOBLOCK’s FK25i unit ticked all the boxes.

“When planning our transport and logistics operations, we have always looked for the best possible compromise between the protection of the environment and food safety,” said Marco Gasper, logistics manager at BIOGROS. “BIOGROS recently received the Lean & Green 2 Stars-Award thanks to the restructuring and the optimisation of our logistic processes to reduce the CO2 emissions. Our collaboration with FRIGOBLOCK is part of this success.”

“Part of our philosophy is to be close to our customers and provide them with turnkey solutions that are right both from an operational and a sustainability point of view,” said Samer Hawat, area sales and service manager for Belgium and Luxembourg, Thermo King. “We’re proud to work with BIOGROS and be part of this important project, which emphasized the importance of green, quiet and environmentally friendly transport.”

BIOGROS’ 26 tonnes eTGM truck with FRIGOBLOCK FK-25i can carry 18 pallets and has an autonomous reach of up to 200km. This is perfectly suitable for the BIOGROS’ regional distribution of organic food, which is characterised by a lot of stop-and-go operations. One of the additional key advantages of the refrigerated vehicle is the virtual absence of noise pollution, which contributes to whisper-quiet and zero-emission deliveries.

“For years, we have worked closely with BIOGROS providing them with immediate support and specialist advice when and where they needed it,” said Paulo Marques, account manager at Gradius. “Knowing their operations and requirements well, we could offer them with the right refrigeration solution to help maximise the results of this project.”

“With Gradius’ support and FRIGOBLOCK’s expertise we were able to achieve significant savings with the new vehicle. Along with the CO2 emissions that shrank from 97 kg to 1.3 kg per 100 km, the energy consumption is also by two thirds lower than the one of a regular diesel truck,” said Marco Gasper. “We believe the fleet electrification in the retail sector is a trend that is set to continue. Working with Thermo King and FRIGOBLOCK will help us ensure high performing, reliable and sustainable refrigeration for our current and future fleet.”

Vaccine Transport Protection

Temperature-controlled transport specialist Thermo King is ready to meet the challenge of storing COVID-19 vaccines, which are likely to require extreme conditions beyond anything previously needed in the industry. Paul Hamblin hears about the plans.

Pharmaceutical companies in final-stage clinical trials for COVID vaccines anticipate they will require strict temperature controls to safeguard their products – indeed, down to temperatures as low as -70 degrees Celsius. That requirement caught a lot of people in the industry off guard, says Jessica Poliner, VP Marine, Rail and Air for Thermo King, by Trane Technologies. “It’s because it’s about maintaining the temperature the vaccines need to be transported and stored at,” she explains from her office in Brussels. “It’s different than more usual vaccines, which are usually kept at 2-8 degrees Celsius. The stability profile of the potential COVID vaccines is much more uncertain, and so that certainly leaves more room for degrading, whether through human error or storage problems. It is maintaining that set point that is essential for the vaccine profile.”

Safe vaccine storage is an area that’s vital to get right, because according to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 20 percent of temperature sensitive health care products are damaged during transport, and 25 percent of vaccines reach their destination in a degraded state due to breaks in the cold chain.

Jessica Poliner says that she and her team have spent a lot of time talking to their customers, whether pharma companies, logistics firms, or forwarders, to look at potential solutions for something the whole world is waiting for. It is from these discussions that the temperature requirements became clear. “Everybody’s trying to put together their blueprints of what this will look like. With the Thermo King brand, we have the ability to transport, from road transportation to air cargo. What we’ve added to the mix is a storage solution as well, so that we can offer both transport and storage for vaccines at a very wide range from -70 degrees Celsius to +30 degrees Celsius.”

The requirement for ultra-low temperature isn’t new. “The neat piece with the -70 is that it’s actually a product we’ve used in the marine industry for over 20 years, originally developed to transport a premium grade sashimi tuna along some of the routes from the Mediterranean Sea to Japan and elsewhere. In the past few months we’ve worked to re-purpose that proven product into a solution for vaccine storage at that ultra low temperature of -70 degrees Celsius. So it’s really an exciting time for us to be able to tell a story about a product that we’ve sold a lot of in the past and
have a good experience with, but that’s not in essence being used for that purpose.”

Modifications to it have been relatively minor. “We make a refrigeration system and then put it into the container,” she explains. “We’re recommending a 10 or 20 foot container that has more insulation and some additional safety measures. Obviously if you are going into something at -70 degrees Celsius then safety and PPE are front of mind. But there really isn’t that much difference
to the product itself, which is partly the beauty of it.”

Of course it’s not clear when the solution will be required or in what volume, but Thermo King will be ready to support. “There’s so much uncertainty. Everybody’s been asked to scale, everybody’s been asked to move fast, and there’s still so much uncertainty with when, where and what storage temperature will be needed. Despite a few RFQs out (Request for Quotation), there are still a lot of question marks.”

So her team are having to think on their feet? “The key for us from a manufacturer standpoint is to make sure we have the product available. So, our cold storage product that goes to -70 degrees Celsius can be produced in 10 times the normal volume. That gives you a feel for how quickly we are trying to ramp up our supply.” The alternative used today for ultra-low transport is CO2 in the form of dry ice. This works well when in smaller volumes. “It requires manual intervention and control, so in essence, it’s a band-aid solution. Now volumes of vaccines to be transported and
stored are much higher, and that ‘market’ will look for solutions that are proven and safe, so this is where the Thermo King SuperFreezer makes the difference.”
