Timber Firm Invests in Sustainable Forklifts

Briggs Equipment is proud to support the ambitions of businesses in the UK & Ireland with their sustainability requirements and targets. Increasingly, the company is hearing from companies who want to ‘break the mould’ within their industry and take a lead on such an important and relevant topic.

One such business is Vincent Timber, who have been operating from the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham since 1923. With over 100 years of history and experience, they recently introduced a comprehensive set of actions to support an overall strategic target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Amongst these measures, is the installation of LED lights equipped with sensors through the premises, a biomass facility that uses waste products for heating and a significant investment into a fleet of HGVs that are EURO 6 and ULEZ compliant. As a result, Vincent Timber’s carbon footprint has already decreased by 50%.

To help complement this activity, the company has also taken the decision to replace its diesel forklift fleet with three new Combilift electric powered C5000 SLE sideloader models. Briggs Equipment, alongside its partners Combilift and FTC Safety Solutions, were able to present a solution that ticked every box, through from operator comfort, advanced fleet management to on-site safety and productivity.

The new trucks are tailored specifically to meet the demands of a high-intensity operation, whilst simultaneously reducing emissions and noise pollution. There is also a cost reduction as a result of switching to electric, which is exacerbated following the changes to tax exemptions for red diesel that were introduced in April 2022.

The 5 tonne capacity of the Combilift machines ensure efficient handling of products that can be up to 10 metres long and weigh up to 4 tonne. This level of performance is maintained whether the items are being offloaded, loaded or put into the 5m high top racking in the undercover storage areas.

Sustainable Forklifts

Darren Powell, Managing Director at Vincent Timber, commented: “We are delighted at the impact these new Combilift machines are having on our operations. The decision to switch to electric machines is a key part of our sustainability strategy and Briggs fully understood this ambition and were able to deliver a solution that meets every requirement. We have an excellent relationship with the team at Briggs, and we have worked closely together throughout this process. I truly believe that this collaborative approach to managing our fleet will be mutually beneficial. It is an exciting time for Vincent Timber and as well as celebrating the rich history of the company, we are also looking towards further growth, and have purchased some adjacent land from the council to facilitate this. Thanks to the expertise and first-class service of all involved, our up to the minute fleet will allow efficient handling of an ever increasing volume of products across a more extensive area.”

Jake Vincent, Operations Director at Vincent Timber, also commented: “Compared with the limited manoeuvrability of the old trucks, the multidirectional capability is also particularly beneficial when moving product around tight spaces on the premises and between machinery on the factory floor. As a business that has the wellbeing of its 40+ strong workforce at the heart of its ethos, safety around equipment and in the warehouse is paramount. Vincent Timber therefore worked with Briggs Equipment and FTC Safety Solutions to install its Pedestrian Detection Camera System onto the trucks, which uses AI and machine learning to help operators be more aware of pedestrians in their vicinity and to avoid collisions. The provision of real-time detection and alerts minimises the risk of injuries and damage. We will also benefit from the use of the BE Portal fleet management system from Briggs, which will help provide us with a greater understanding of our operational efficiency and ultimately ensure we can get the most out of our trucks.”

Darran Baker, Briggs Equipment’s Head of Sales – South, commented: “We are really excited about the partnership with Vincent Timber. They have shown an outstanding commitment to their sustainability targets by investing in these new electric Combilift machines. We are committed to supporting our customers negotiate the transition from traditional fuel types to more sustainable options. We have a proven track record in this regard and it’s great to see the drive and determination from companies such as Vincent Timber to make a real difference. This project has been a shining example of collaborative working from a number of different industry partners, and alongside FTC and Combilift we will continue to support Vincent Timber in this exciting new chapter for their business.”

Combilift Are The Largest Manufacturer Of Multidirectional, Sideloading And Articulated Forklifts Globally. Innovation, Flexibility and Service is the ethos on which Combilift’s success is built and has seen us become the world’s fastest-growing forklift manufacturer, exporting to more than 85 countries and with more than 80,000 trucks in use worldwide. No other manufacturer in the world can deliver the same level of customisation and adaptability, or cater so effectively to the diverse needs of every individual customer, whether their enterprise is large or small.

Sideloader for the Environment

As a developer of solutions for effective closed-loop recycling, Vecoplan sees itself as a company with a higher purpose. The demand for wood and plastics is increasing worldwide. With waste levels increasing, recycling means much can be returned to production with a high degree of quality.

Vecoplan AG is at the forefront of making that possible. The company develops and manufactures systems for sale worldwide to the wood and waste processing industries. At their headquarter in Bad Marienberg, Germany, imposing machines are built with the aid of the Baumann Rosso EFQ 80L, a 120-volt electric sideloader that runs across a large sloping site that straddles public roads.

“It’s a modern, well ordered, but busy site,” says Richter Fördertechnik’s area sales manager, Thomas Brühl, “and the sideloader is key to moving large items from stores to production, paint shop to dispatch.” Being electric means there is no emissions issues for the truck working inside and out, whilst the excellent power to weight ratio also means it is no slouch on the short journeys up and down the narrow public road.

Waste prevention is one of today’s most pressing tasks and challenges. Careful use of resources, reasonable recycling, environment-driven thinking, and sustainable acting become more important every day. Vecoplan has been tackling these challenges successfully for more than 50 years. Today they are a leading partner of the international wood and recycling industries with numerous branches and selling agencies all over the world.

Vecoplan develops, produces, and sells technologically superior plants and machines for shredding, conveying, and processing primary and secondary raw materials gained in recycling processes. Continuous research and development as well as in-house-production give their customers a competitive edge in technology.

They deliver everything from the single machine to the complete plant, according to their customers’ demand, meeting highest standards of quality and sustainability.

“The opportunity of successfully mastering these challenges together with our customers,” says Vecoplan, “is a source of pride and inspiration.”

Electric Sideloader

Likewise, the electric EFQ range is something Baumann is also immensely proud of. “The short overall length and tight turning circle make this a highly manoeuvrable machine,” says Baumann key accounts manager, Schapour Dadsetan. “The design provides a highly efficient sideloader without sacrificing the mast or well width capabilities, or the clearance and low bed height.”

With the machine critical for specific production tasks, it is also important that it is available when called upon. With less power needed to achieve high levels of performance, running time between charges has been extended. A specially designed intelligent system can also be paired with a charger system to re-energise in mid-shift without damaging the cells and a battery change option. “Runtime is clearly very important for all our customers,” adds Schapour, “and being able to run up to nine hours on a single change, makes this the ideal truck for the job.”

Designed and built from the ground up, the EFQ followed two years of painstaking research and development, and features a completely new chassis, battery, and power train configuration. The operator cabin was also designed from scratch, maintaining the company’s reputation for comfort and uncluttered operability. “It is a great environment for the operator,” says Thomas, “it is comfortable with instinctive controls. Drivers can sometimes get fatigued from the noise and vibration from an engine truck, but the Baumann is quiet and smooth even in busy environments like this.”

Technical support from Richter Fördertechnik also means continuous smooth running of the machine. Richter have been a leading light in Baumann’s European dealer network for decades, maintaining Baumann trucks several customers in the area. The company prides itself on their ability to support all manner of businesses with a large team of technical support staff on the road, round the clock.

“Richter understand customers well and deliver an excellent service” says Schapour. “Our machines need to be well maintained and understanding the needs of the Baumann electrics is something that Richter have great experience in.”

25 Years of Materials Handling Innovation

It’s going to be a busy few months on the exhibition circuit for Irish materials handling specialist Combilift. It will be using the ProMAT event in March to kickstart celebrations to mark the company’s 25th anniversary. Amongst the many and varied exhibits that are always a feature of Combilift’s trade fair appearances, the 75,000th truck to roll off the production lines will also be on show. This model, with its special livery, will take centre stage at the booth and will be formally handed over to the customer during the show. An evening of entertainment and dinner for guests is also planned at a location close by the McCormick Place show venue.

As testimony to Combilift’s tireless R&D department, five new products will be launched throughout the year at various European trade fairs and in-house at the global HQ and manufacturing facility in Monaghan. The first of these will be unveiled at LogiMAT in April in Stuttgart. These will all feature the groundbreaking technology and innovation that has been a hallmark of Combilift products since the first C4000 multidirectional model first appeared on the market in 1998. More information on these new developments will be released in due course.

Further exhibits will of course represent the dozens of solutions that Combilift now offers for the safe, space saving and productive handling of long products, pallets and oversized loads. These will include multidirectional forklifts, sideloaders, pedestrian stackers and Aisle Master narrow aisle articulated trucks, all of which will be able to be seen live in action.

“We are looking forward to marking this company milestone at events and in person with our customers, dealers, sales personnel, representatives from the international trade press and of course our workforce,” said Combilift CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar. “Their loyalty and support has been pivotal in enabling us to achieve the amazing level of growth and success that we have experienced during the last 25 years. We’re not going to rest on our laurels though – you can expect more innovation from us in the next few decades to come!”

Hubtex enhances PhoeniX range with silence pump

Industrial truck manufacturer Hubtex is expanding its PhoeniX range with the introduction of the new PhoeniX 2825 Series. The electric multidirectional sideloader for handling long, heavy and bulky goods has been enhanced with a revolutionary piece of kit: A silence pump that reduces operating noise by up to 10dBA.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the 2825 Series covers a broad range of applications in narrow aisles, for the automotive, aluminium and wood industries among others. The low-noise truck comes with an impressive array of features, including a choice of three driver’s cabins.

The modular system of the PhoeniX electric multidirectional sideloader consists of a basic model, which can be gradually expanded by adding additional features. And now Hubtex is set to enhance the modular system even further with the PhoeniX 2825 for load capacities of 3t to 4.5t.

Silence pump enhances working environment

“When it comes to reducing operating noise, the PhoeniX 2825 truly excels. This is thanks to the silence pump, which will be integrated as standard for this series of trucks in the future,” explains Hans-Joachim Finger, Managing Director of Sales and Purchasing at Hubtex. The feature particularly enhances the day-to-day working environment of the truck operators, since the noise level is significantly lower.

At full load, the pump is approximately 8dBA quieter, and in the lower load range the noise level can be reduced by as much as 10dBA. This lowers the frequency of the operating noise and makes it much more bearable for the workers. If the load is very high, an internal gear pump can still be installed. It is also possible to switch between pump types in existing Hubtex trucks without any problems.

Optional features

The PhoeniX 2825 is the successor to the 2125 Series. Described by Hubtex as a true all-rounder that can be used both indoors and out for high-volume applications in the 3t to 4.5t range, the truck is also optimally equipped for loading and unloading trucks carrying aluminium profiles or long wooden materials, for example. With a frame length of just 2,440mm and a wide range of optional features to enhance the truck, the compact powerhouse can lend itself to any task.

Hubtex says the ergonomics and design are first-rate. Users have a choice of three cabins in different sizes, which, in combination with the short frame length, provide optimal panoramic views and improved visibility. The truck can also reach lift heights of up to 8,500mm. Yet even this parameter can be enhanced to meet customer requirements thanks to the high degree of customisation of the modular system. Last but not least, the PhoeniX 2825 boasts electric steering, which allows longer operating times due to its lower energy consumption.
