Remaining units taken at Madrid logistics park

Delin Property, the fully integrated European logistics warehouse specialist, has leased to Maersk Logistics & Services the two remaining units at Alcalá East Madrid Park, its greenfield development in the established Alcalá de Henares distribution hub serving the Spanish capital.

The subsidiary of A.P.Moeller – Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping groups, has agreed to lease a total of 21,000 sq m in the second building of the park developed by Delin Property following its purchase of the site in late 2018. Alcalá de Henares is 40km from central Madrid and Delin Property’s park enjoys excellent connectivity through two accesses onto the A2 motorway to Zaragoza and Barcelona, in North East Spain.

Alcalá East Madrid Park comprises two warehouses, which have been divided into smaller units to provide a total of 45,700 sq m of leasable space. The occupiers of the park’s other units include third-party logistics provider arvato-Bertelsmann and Conforama, the home furnishings retail chain. Each building provides 12.2m of free storage height, office space and are certified as “very good” by BREEAM.

The project is part of Delin Property’s investment strategy in Spain, which to date has involved developments in prime logistics locations in Greater Madrid. Its other investment in Spain is in the South Madrid Logistics Park project in Ilescas, where it is scheduled to deliver the second of three buildings in early 2023.

Rob Reiskin, CEO of Delin Property, said: “Completing the lease-up of this development is a major milestone for our development strategy in Spain, where we’ve had a team on the ground since 2018. We like the fundamentals of the Spanish market and are actively looking for opportunities to broaden the portfolio by acquiring well-located, income-producing assets. The new pricing environment in which we find ourselves will certainly help in this regard.”

Face Consultants boosts presence in Spain with acquisition

Face Consultants Ltd and Qualidal have acquired Eurostick S.L., Spain’s market leader in the testing, consulting, and on-site supervision of industrial floors for the logistics sector. Face Consultants, part of the CoGri Group of companies, is a global flooring consultant providing design, surveying, and testing for industrial and commercial concrete flooring. Qualidal, part of Flat Ingenierie, is the market leader in France for independent control and consulting in industrial slabs.

Face Consultants and Qualidal’s joint venture, through their respective group companies, will bring an extended range of flooring services under the Eurostick name. Based in Madrid, the new partnership will provide extended floor flatness testing, design, and consultancy services. Also, floor repairs, and upgrading flatness of very narrow aisle and automated warehouses for the latest robotics systems.

“We are delighted to be establishing an even stronger presence in Spain, collaborating with Qualidal to bring a full range of flooring services, from floor design through to the upgrading of existing floors,” said Kevin Dare (pictured, second left), Face Consultants Managing Director. “I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Beth and Ignacio Sánchez Salinero of Eurostick, S.L., for their partnership with us over the previous 20-plus years. Beth and Ignacio will retain the functions of director at Eurostick and ensure the continuity of the projects.

“E-commerce in Spain remains one of the key drivers of logistics. The purchase and leasing of warehouse space across Spain have increased considerably compared to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. Market surveys suggest that a higher level of quality logistics facilities is now being built.

“However, floor flatness is often something that many do not consider until they explore automated systems or sophisticated materials handling equipment, and sometimes not until after they have acquired it. Just because your building is newly built or refurbished doesn’t mean the floor is ‘fit for purpose’.”

Dare concludes: “Face Consultants and Qualidal have many years of experience in testing and upgrading concrete floors to ensure they are suitable for your warehouse operations. We are delighted to provide these services throughout Spain and beyond.”

Eurostick’s head office will remain in Madrid, but the address will be changing in the next few weeks. Ignacio and Beth’s roles and responsibilities will devolve over the next 12 to 24 months. A new General Manager has been engaged to head up Eurostick and an announcement regarding this will be made soon.

The incoming General Manager has stated: “I am excited to be working with Kevin Dare at Face Consultants and Marc Pestel-Debord at Qualidal under the Eurostick name. Also, to be able to tap into the wealth of knowledge gained over many years by these highly regarded companies. It means that we can provide an extended range of flooring services to the Spanish warehouse marketplace during a time of considerable retail and e-Commerce change.”

AR extends household items warehouse

Logística de Menaje S.L., part of the Grupo Marcos Larrañaga y CIA which operates in the household items sector for hospitality and households with the Lacor and Ibili brands, chose AR Racking to carry out the extension of its logistics centre located in Alegría-Dulantzi (Álava, Spain).

Completed at the end of 2021, the extension to Logística de Menaje’s warehouse is a continuous innovation process to adapt to the needs of its customers to offer a premium quality service in terms of design, production, logistics and administration. The storage systems specialist AR Rackinghad previously completed in 2020 an initial optimisation phase of 3,540 sq m of the warehouse.

In this second phase of the project, the extension covered a total of 1,445 sq m of the intermediate stock warehouse, installing the AR Shuttle semi-automated storage system. This solution with motorised pallet shuttles has enabled maximum exploitation of both the floor and height space to generate a storage capacity for 4,961 pallets, on top of the 12,960 obtained in the installation of 2020. In total, this amounts to almost 18,000 positions for storing household products.

Compact racking equipped with AR Shuttle make up a high-density storage system, enabling great use of the space and reduction of the work aisles of the forklift. In fact, it is the motorised pallet shuttles that transport the unit loads autonomously inside the racking structure.

Complex and custom design in 4 weeks

The project had to consider complex development limitations that necessitated a detailed floor and height design, which thanks to the perfect execution of AR Racking’s civil engineering and engineering work ensured its success.

Of note, too, were the tight deadlines managed to get the warehouse operational as quickly as possible, executing the installation of this second extension phase in just four weeks. The initial phase was developed in seven weeks.

In the words of Menaje’s Logistics Director, Yolanda Ocio: “Having the facilities up and running in record time allowed us to continue with our daily business operations adapting to the storage needs that arose.

“This intermediate stock area installed with the AR Shuttle system acts as a buffer from our shipment area and allows us to store a high number of references in a very reduced space.”

From AR Racking, Xabier Rica, Project Manager and Sales Representative for the Northern Region, stressed: “The joint work with Menaje S.L.’s logistics managers was key to developing the project according to its specific storage needs, and fully optimising the available space through the construction of the warehouse and design of the storage system.”

GKN chooses AR Racking for Spanish plant

GKN Ayra Servicio, a subsidiary of the global leader in propulsion systems GKN Automotive, has chosen the storage systems specialist AR Racking as the industrial racking supplier for the warehouse at its plant in Carcastillo (Navarre, Spain).

With its headquarters in Birmingham (England), the multinational GKN has made a strategic investment in its factory in Navarre to become a leading plant in spare parts for automotive transmission systems in Europe, and to triple its sales in the short term. GKN therefore turned to AR Racking to install industrial racking to achieve a logistics operation that would maximise warehouse efficiency.

AR Racking has installed a combination of several storage systems adapted to the different volumes and rotation of products that GKN works with at the Carcastillo plant.

The pallet load will be stored on very narrow aisle (VNA) racking, with a storage capacity of up to 5,696 pallets. This system is an adaptation of the adjustable pallet racking system, but compacted by the narrowing of the work aisles, which creates a high-density storage system that helps to increase the warehouse capacity but without expanding the space.

For the manual storage of GKN’s smaller spare parts and for their handling using picking solutions, AR Racking has installed 2164.5 linear metres of longspan shelving. It is very versatile racking that adapts to all types of unit loads and that facilitates access to products stored directly and immediately. In addition, for long and higher volume loads, AR Racking has implemented a solution with cantilever racking that covers a total of 166.5 linear metres. It is a system that offers excellent goods handling mobility.

AR Racking has also installed a mezzanine floor on two levels for a light shelving warehouse. The mezzanine floor covers a total of 1,809 sq m and is a storage solution that helps increase useful area at height.

“AR Racking’s storage systems meet the strictest European quality standards. What’s more, equipping the warehouse just as we had planned proved to be an agile and smooth process,” stated Pablo Hernando, GKN Project Manager.

Xabier Rica, AR Racking Sales Representative and project manager, added: “We are convinced that GKN will be able to achieve greater competitiveness with the industrial racking installed and therefore improve its logistics operations.”

AR Racking optimises Gear4music’s warehouse

The logistics centre of the sixth and latest European facility of Gear4music, a leading online retailer in the sale of musical instruments and accessories from the United Kingdom, has been designed and equipped with an AR Racking storage solution with a capacity for 60,000 items.

With a continuous multichannel approach, the UK’s largest musical instruments retailer has been selling its range of items across Europe since 2012 and in 190 countries since 2017. Since its foundation in 2003, the company has increased its turnover tenfold to around €185m last year. To serve growing markets in Europe and maintain a local presence, the company is represented by six subsidiaries and distribution centres in Europe. The latest centre opened just recently in Barcelona, where AR Racking has played a defining role in designing, manufacturing and installing the ideal storage system for optimisation of the new warehouse.

“The sales director Jörg Buschmann and his AR Racking team were able to tackle all the logistics challenges that our new warehouse posed, despite our tight schedule, with the promise of a short turnaround and competitive prices,” said Jan Imig, Gear4Music Germany and Spain Managing Director, explaining the contract award. “The initial preliminary planning and concept of fully equipping the facilities with proven and certified components from AR Racking’s product portfolio were convincing.”

In the two months following the contract award, AR Racking implemented its adapted storage solution precisely to the shipping warehouse requirements of Gear4music, including the picking and packaging areas. To achieve optimum use of the space and high availability, AR Racking designed and installed a solution with very narrow aisle (VNA) racking. A total of 3,600 pallet positions have been created on 15 racking aisles.

The galvanised frames are up to 9.5m high and have 16 levels. The beams are designed for pallets of up to 250kg each. Some of the levels have been designed for picking solutions, generating 1,800 positions and are equipped with mesh racks. The U and L-shaped frame protectors provide protection for maximum safety and to avoid damage to the support frames. The aisle width is 1.75m, generating a higher storage capacity with the same space compared to the adjustable pallet racking system.

For shipping, the items are transferred to the picking and packaging area. Depending on the order specifications, this is where the items are consolidated, packaged and goods are prepared for shipment, if necessary. “AR Racking’s team did a great job in every phase of the project,” commented Imig. “Constructive communication process and fast direct contacts, including in the follow-up. Changes to and deviations from the original plans were agreed based on AR Racking’s experience and were quickly applied. The team fulfilled our high expectations and has strengthened the effectiveness of our dispatch centre in Barcelona. Finally, and with everything going smoothly, the facilities were up and running as scheduled by mid-September. We were and we are very satisfied with all of AR Racking’s services.”

New EHLIS warehouse rises to 36m

EHLIS, a leading company in Spain for the distribution of hardware products, has expanded its logistics capacity with the opening of a new clad-rack warehouse equipped by the industrial storage solutions specialist AR Racking. The new logistics warehouse is located in the Plataforma Central Iberum, in Illescas (Toledo) and is 36 metres high.

The logistics centre in this locality is based on the design and installation of AR Racking’s galvanised clad-rack warehouse solutions, which apart from storing the load makes up the structure of the building. With this clad-rack warehouse which occupies 3,125 sq m, EHLIS can store around 30,000 pallets distributed on a combination of both single and double-deep racking systems. Clad-rack warehouses provide great load density resulting in significant savings for lower investment. The installation was completed in four months.

The load inside the racking will be handled by four stacker cranes, whose design and installation, as well as the automation of the intralogistics processes, was carried out by one of the most important automated logistics engineering companies.

As communicated before the start of the work, Armando Aldrey, Logistics Director of EHLIS, decided to build this new automated clad-rack warehouse in Illescas because the company’s facilities in Sant Andreu de la Barca (around 20km from Barcelona), “were already overstretched” and “we needed to increase our logistics capacity”.

AR Racking’s experience and specialisation in these types of high bay and storage capacity warehouses was decisive when it came to making this warehouse a reality, which will allow us to provide a faster and more efficient service to our colleagues, be more efficient in our internal operations and tackle ambitious challenges,” added Aldrey.

The structure, which features AR Racking’s galvanised racking that provides maximum resistance to corrosion and adverse environmental conditions, will help drive EHLIS’s commercial and distribution strategy with customers in the centre, south and northwest of Spain. In addition, the goods stored in this clad-rack warehouse will serve more than 50% of those associated with the network of hardware stores that the company has under the Cadena88 brand.

Roberto Arriaran, Director for Integration Business Unit of AR Racking, stated: “We are delighted to provide our industrial storage expertise so that EHLIS can see an increase in the efficiency and profitability of its operations, helping to offer its customers a better service each day.”

AR increases capacity by 40% for AZA Logistics

The AZA Group, which has been strengthening the logistics strategy of its subsidiary AZA Logistics, has opened an ambitious logistics warehouse in Sagunto (Valencia) with a capacity for 45,000 pallets thanks to AR Racking’s industrial storage solutions.

The 25,000 sq m warehouse will be fully optimised with VNA racking designed, manufactured and installed by AR Racking. This type of racking is a high-density storage solution that can increase warehouse capacity without having to increase the space. Greater compaction is mainly created by narrowing the work aisles, which can reduce the width by up to 1.85m and save up to 40% in space. The industrial racking installed is 19m high.

During a second phase which will be completed in the coming months, another storage area will be installed with a capacity for a further 6,000 pallets. An area of the warehouse that will be adapted to maintain a controlled temperature from 10°C to 25°C in Phase 1 and from 5°C to 10°C in Phase 2 for the planned storage of pharmaceutical and food sector products.

The new logistics platform confirms the group’s firm commitment to its comprehensive logistics operator AZA Logistics. “Undoubtedly this warehouse represents a major milestone in AZA Logistics’ history,” commented Juan Zamorano, CEO of the AZA Group. “We are very satisfied with the quality of the installation and strict completion of deadlines provided by AR Racking.”

In addition to AR Racking’s storage solutions, the warehouse includes the latest technology for the preparation of pallets and other unit loads, positioning AZA Logistics as a leading 4PL logistics operator.

Vicente Marin, AR Racking’s Sales Representative in the Levante region, added: “After initial conversations with the AZA team, we immediately identified that we needed an agile warehouse. VNA racking allows a loading and unloading operation with direct and immediate access to the goods, minimising times.”

This type of racking which is also operated by turret trucks (Combi) makes great use of the available height in the warehouse, optimising the storage space to the full.

The project was executed with a perfect coordination in the delivery of materials and assembly of the structure, strictly meeting the deadlines.
