BOC Procure Articulated Flatbed Trailer Fleet

BOC, the UK & Ireland’s largest provider of industrial, medical and specialist gases, began procuring specialist articulated flatbed trailers and rigid bodywork solutions from Tiger Trailers in 2023, and the 59 vehicles supplied by the Cheshire manufacturer in Q1 2025 take the running total to 135. Comprising 29 trailers and 30 rigid solutions, they signal an ever-strengthening and growing relationship.

Lorraine Purvis, BOC Head of Deliver – Cylinder Transport PGP, says: “The Tiger team have worked hard to deliver the needs of our business to a very high quality. The transport team are looking forward to integrating these vehicles into our fleet. I would like to thank them for their attention to detail and continued support they show us as a business. Also, a big thanks to Mark Beal our Fleet engineer who has worked tirelessly with Tiger to seek improvements on our fleet.”

Tiger’s flatbed trailers for the gas cylinder division of BOC’s fleet are designed for each transporting up to twenty-six BOC pintle pallets, secured in three rows of fifteen bottles, with a central aisle featuring a portable safety gate that closes off the load when part-laden. When not in use the gate is stowed within the front headboard. Following driver feedback from Schenk (formerly Suttons Tankers), various operational improvements have been implemented to the constantly expanding fleet.

The rear of the chassis is designed to provide an access ladder up to the central aisle, various components from the pintle blades to the grab handles are finished in yellow for safety, and a fire extinguisher and a tube document holder are fitted to each trailer to comply with ADR & IMDG regulations.

Ignacio Torres-Manzi, Tiger Trailers’ Technical Sales Manager, comments: “It is a great privilege for us to work with another fantastic customer and continue building upon the working relationship. A huge thanks to the wider BOC team for the continued efforts, with a particular shout-out to Mark Beal for all his expertise offered into the process. We look forward to the continuation of Tiger being a key partner to BOC for hopefully many years to come!”.

These new pintle trailers will be operating within the customer’s cylinder trunking network across the UK, Ireland, as well as into Europe, feeding the supply chain with full and made-up loads for onward distribution to its end customers. The trailers are operated by Schenk UK on behalf of BOC.

The latest order of rigid bodywork solutions from Tiger for BOC are built on DAF XB 18-tonne chassis from the Ford & Slater DAF dealership in Leeds. Designed for transporting eight pallets for easy delivery to a wide range of customers, the bodies are framed by galvanised plates on all four sides, with a pressed steel fabricated and galvanised walkway down the middle, and a large stowaway cylinder trolley fitted to the offside rear, completed with a kerb ramp. A downrated 1-tonne Dhollandia DHVOG.15. K1 1000.800 tail lift is incorporated at the back.

Other specification details of BOC’s latest Tiger rigid bodies include a small medical cylinder holder, a toolbox, cellar rope, full-enclosure wraparound safety gates, and solar platform lights to fully encompass the comprehensive BOC specification.

The new rigids will join a 100% fleet of DAF trucks and undertake the network distribution from 35 UK sites stretching from Inverness to Plymouth and Port Talbot to Thetford.

Part of the Linde Group, BOC’s fleet size is 650 vehicles from light vans, rigids from 14t to 32t, plus tractor units operating at 44 tonnes. The BOC trailer fleet, which includes tankers as well as the specialised pintle trailers consists of 320 vehicles across the UK & Ireland. The gases delivered cover every aspect of industry, from manufacturing and science to aviation and healthcare.

Show-Stopping Trailers Unveiled by Transport Company

Biscuit Manufacturer gets Double Deck Trailers

A fleet introduction debut that was four years in the baking, Fox’s Burton’s Companies (FBC) UK Limited has welcomed the first Tiger Trailers-manufactured vehicles to its fleet in the form of nineteen moving deck double decks and two single deck box vans, boasting mouth-watering full-wrap Maryland Cookies, Jammie Dodgers, and Party Rings liveries.

The biscuit manufacturer’s new double decks are powered by Tiger’s own four-ram hydraulic lifting system and have been designed and engineered in a wedge iteration to enable them to transport a capacity of fifty-two UK pallets. This maximises utilisation efficiency and reduces both carbon dioxide emissions and fuel spend.

Danny Hobkirk, Fleet Transport Operations Manager for Fox’s Burton’s Companies, says: “Everyone from across our business is excited to see these first Tiger trailers join our fleet. They look stunning with some of the nation’s most-loved biscuit brands on them. Tom and Tiger colleagues have visited our sites on many occasions throughout this project’s development, during which time we have utilised a number of double decks from Tiger Rentals and also visited Tiger’s site for 3D reviews, all giving us full confidence in the new vehicles’ ability to fulfil our requirements.”

Safety for its operatives and also other road users was at the forefront of the delivered specification for the customer’s new articulated trailers, which incorporate the Safe Parking systems from both Haldex and Maple, along with a ground-level sliding coupling, upgraded tow-guard with an over-centre locking handle to protect against finger injuries, a wanderlead for remote deck operation, Anchorlock to mitigate trailer runaways, and a wide range of additional lighting both externally and internally. A flashing warning lamp to warn cyclists of the trailers’ danger zones and to inform them when the vehicle is turning left has also been fitted.

Thomas Stott, Key Account Manager at Tiger Trailers, remarks: “It’s been a pleasure collaborating closely with the Logistics team from FBC while working on these exciting new trailers. Our businesses share a desire for high quality, and it’s great to see a customer taking safety so seriously as seen in the specification of their new trailers. It’s great each time we see one of FBC’s new Tiger trailers out there delivering confectionaries everyone is familiar with, and we look forward to continuing to support their operations over the coming months and years”.

The treat-maker’s new Tiger trailers will operate out of FBC’s sites in Batley, West Yorkshire, and Kirkham in Lancashire, delivering its iconic biscuits throughout the UK.

High Cube Trailers for ASDA Clothing

ASDA Stores Ltd has introduced 35 Tiger assets to its George clothing fleet in the form of 4.9m tall ‘high cube’ trailers featuring an internal tail-lift to reflect the customer’s special operational requirements. The side-mounted D’hollandia platform inside each of the 35 new step frame trailers tailored for George clothing brand duties has a capacity of 500kg and operates up and down the length of the trailer.

Operatives can manoeuvre this internal platform longitudinally and vertically, enabling them to position the 150 load-securing bars to suit the internal roof mounted tracks and 9 horizontal tracks fitted at various heights down each side of the trailer internally.

Gavin Town, Senior Manager – National Fleet for ASDA Stores Ltd, says: “The Tiger team visited our site a number of times and truly listened to our needs and have delivered the goods with these High Cube trailers. We would like to thank them for their attention to detail and the continued support they show us as a business.”

Tiger is known for customising the trailers and rigids it manufactures to meet the exacting requirements of each of its end-user customers, and the specification of these specialist garment transport trailers built for ASDA also includes an internal step for safer access to the neck area, safety gates on the moving platform, a Nexus ground-level coupling, Axscend tyre pressure monitoring, and external heat treatment paint for the roof.

Darren Holland, Sales Director at Tiger Trailers, comments: “We always relish the opportunity to demonstrate our ability to design, engineer and manufacture bespoke vehicles to suit our customers’ unique operations and are delighted to have worked with the ASDA team on these garment transportation trailers.”

Tiger Trailers has supplied articulated vehicles to ASDA for a number of years and is currently manufacturing 90 additional moving deck trailers, taking the supermarket’s Tiger fleet to over 500 assets. The new clothing trailers primarily operate out of its Brackmills, Limedale, and Washington NEC sites.

Parcel Handling Specialist adds Trailers to Fleet

Five years since they commissioned Tiger Trailers to build 17 double deck trailers, The Delivery Group team approached Tiger in April of 2024 to produce their second-generation trailers, custom designed to match their evolving delivery operation. The order comprised 10 curtainsiders with tuckaway tail-lifts, and 10 moving double deck box vans.

Responsible for both short-haul regional drops and nationwide trunking of both caged and palletised goods, durability and usability were at the forefront of The Delivery Group’s requirements. Chosen for their attention to detail and ability to deliver a bespoke solution, Tiger worked closely with The Delivery Group during pre-build visits and production, to incorporate optimum features and technology.

Martin Johnson, Operations Director at The Delivery Group comments: “Our bespoke operation requires flexibility, strength and reliability to meet the needs of our operation and clients. This latest purchase from Tiger since we took the initial Tiger trailers back in 2014, allowed us to design and build a new trailer type that caters for, and suits our operational needs perfectly with the help of the Tiger Team. Partnerships are key to our operational success, and the collaborative approach from Tiger challenged our ideas whilst engaging their design skills to define how best to achieve our objectives. The result is a trailer that ‘ticks every box’ on our wish list and looks great.”

To maximise capacity and varying load weights, a reinforced rear frame, sides, and 12-tonne moving deck were chosen, with a false bulkhead fitted near the front of the deck to allow partial loading of the moving deck. Enhanced visual aids and electronically controlled hydraulic safety locks, as well as an override on the motor pump mechanism, mean that users are made aware of any load errors long before the vehicle makes it to transit.

Sales Director at Tiger Trailers, Darren Holland says: “It has been a pleasure to work closely with the team from The Delivery Group again. Developing their new trailers’ needs in line with the way that their businesses and logistics have evolved is fantastic and the new trailers look amazing.” The Delivery Group also opted for a 60-month service and maintenance package direct from Tiger, backed by nationwide breakdown provision.

At 9.7m in length, Allied Bakeries’ new 18-tonne rigid trucks were designed by Tiger and the customer’s fleet team with durability at the forefront of the specification, to equip them for extended operational service and increased return on investment.

Allied Bakeries’ National Fleet Engineer, comments: “Thomas and the Tiger team impressed us with their precision and detail-oriented engineering approach, which was highly spec’-driven and tailored to bespoke needs. The new Tiger-built rigid bodies incorporate a 1.5-tonne Dhollandia DH-SKS80 flat platform retractable tail-lift, allowing bread delivery baskets to be easily loaded and unloaded, making the fleet’s deliveries more efficient than ever.

Temperature Controlled Trailers Ordered Again

Fly By Nite, renowned specialists in trucking, logistics and warehousing for the entertainment industry has, for what is now the fourth time, placed its continued trust in Tiger Trailers with a further order which this time comprises temperature controlled trailers, as the operator expands its offering by introducing vehicles aimed at touring orchestras.

Adding temperature controlled trailers to its fleet for the first time enables Fly By Nite Conferences to offer the optimum transport environment for orchestras’ musical instruments by keeping the box vans’ internal temperature to a constant 21 degrees, which mitigates the potential cracking and splitting of these often expensive assets – instruments such as cellos maintaining their sound and also their state of tune if kept at room temperature while in transit.

Richard Brown, Transport Manager at Fly By Nite, says: “Tiger have once again delivered the goods, on time, and to a high standard, this time with specialised temperature controlled trailers that allow us to offer an extra layer of specialism to our orchestral clients. Our fleet remains very busy all year round and we feel we can rely on Tiger’s products and services. These new additions to our fleet should prove an invaluable asset. Thanks to Tom and the rest of the Tiger team along with the guys at LeciTrailer for producing these unique trailers for us.”

Aware of Tiger’s growing reputation in the temperature controlled trailer and rigid bodywork manufacturing sector through its partnership with LeciTrailer of Spain, and the OEM’s ability to design and build entirely bespoke products tailored to each end user’s requirements, Fly By Nite’s new trailers are personalised in various ways, with a 970mm coupling/fifth wheel height, twin hamburger-style rear lights, additional sensors and switches for the interior lighting, a lockable door cam protector, and a unique alloy ramp carrier to accommodate their loading and unloading preferences.

Load securing with delicate and expensive orchestral instruments in mind has also been catered for by Tiger’s design and engineering team, with three rows of horizontal E-tracks at different heights, plus vertical E-tracks from the roof, down each side of the trailer.

Thomas Stott, Key Accounts Manager at Tiger Trailers, comments: “It’s been a pleasure as always for us to work closely with the Fly By Nite team in ensuring that our latest trailers for them meet exactly what they need for the high-profile and time-sensitive work they do. It’s been exciting to develop a different type of product for them, from our proven temperature controlled range, which we have offered since 2020, and it’s great to see on Fly By Nite’s social channels that Tiger-built trailers are delivering instruments, sound equipment, refreshments and other loads to some of the biggest names in global entertainment.”

Fly By Nite has previously ordered 30 straight-frame single-deck articulated box van semi-trailers from Tiger, along with four step-frame variants, and the specialist operator’s four new temperature controlled vehicles from the Cheshire OEM’s refrigerated range have entered straight into service on UK and European orchestral tours.

More Box Van Trailers for Parcel Delivery

Evri, one of the UK’s largest dedicated parcel delivery companies, has ordered 139 additional twin-axle van trailers from Tiger Trailers, with the order split into three batches, the first of which is currently nearing completion, with the remainder to be delivered by mid-Q4, ready for the UK’s retail period towards Christmas, during which time it expects to transport over 3 million parcels.

Branded in Evri’s special 50th anniversary livery, its new articulated semi-trailers delivered by Tiger may attract plenty of attention on the road network, with a slightly differently stylised Evri logo on 25 of the vehicles.

David Landy, Evri’s Head of Fleet, comments: “We’re delighted with the new trailers, they look great and are helping us celebrate our heritage and 50 years of courier deliveries. We have a great relationship with Tiger and they have been superb in meeting our unique needs for the new trailers.”

At 4 metres in height and manufactured to Evri’s unique requirements, the new trailers have once again been designed and manufactured with operational robustness and longevity in mind, evidenced through a galvanised rear frame with integrated rear buffers.

Operator safety has been taken into consideration as seen through details such as the full-length stutter door strap to enable closure from ground level to mitigate any potential strain injuries, and a retractable tail-lift from Dhollandia with P-gates aids loading and unloading. Yellow side infills increase safety for cyclists, and Haldex’s GEN-4 braking system along with its TEM® (Trailer Emergency Module) Safe Parking valve heighten safety during yard operation and driving on the road.

Darren Holland, Tiger Trailers’ Sales Director, says: “It’s fantastic that we are continuing to strengthen the relationship with the Evri team. At each enquiry stage we go through the same process of evaluation of the existing fleet to ensure that the final trailer design is perfect for the Evri operation. We are very proud of the relationship and the final trailers that we are supplying into their operation.”

Tiger and Evri share a focus on environmental sustainability, with solar panels and biodiversity areas installed at the trailer manufacturer’s factory and the parcel operator’s flagship superhub respectively. Evri operates 202 Biomethane Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG) tractor units which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 84% and also reduce NOx, particulate matter and noise pollution compared to equivalent diesel trucks, while Tiger manufactures skeletal and other specialist trailers for Evri’s CNG supplier.

Joining the 200 trailers supplied in 2015 and the 189 trailers added in 2022, this latest order from Evri takes the operator’s Tiger Trailers fleet over the 525 mark.

Moving Deck Trailers

Tiger Trailers is known for manufacturing bespoke articulated trailers and rigid bodywork to meet its end users’ unique requirements, and Asda’s new double deck trailers have been designed for transporting both cages and UK pallets. Safety for its people and others is paramount for the supermarket, as evidenced by the fitment of a large number of warning and information labels to its trailers, along with cycle safety notices. A ferry trestle support is built into the neck area for Asda’s RoRo operations, air suspension and a roll stability programme enhance cargo integrity, and the controls for the moving deck are positioned to enable operation from both ground level and from store loading bays.

Darren Holland, Tiger Trailers’ Sales Director, comments: “Working with Peter and the Asda team has been a great experience. From the initial on-site meetings to view their operations to sharing the 3D model of their precise trailer at the factory and finally presenting the trailer in our showroom to the Asda team we are really happy with the final product. These trailers will be servicing the Asda ambient operation, and we look forward to working with the Asda team in the future.”

A significant proportion of Asda’s 167 new Tiger-built double deck trailers can already be seen in service on the road, primarily operating from the supermarket’s ambient distribution centres that are situated throughout the UK, along with its Irish Sea Carriers routes.

52 Rigids and 3 Double Deck Trailers

Johnsons Hotel Linen, one of the UK’s largest hotel laundry hire and service providers, has begun introducing to its fleet fifty-two rigids and three fixed double decks manufactured by Tiger Trailers, with an emphasis on durability to meet its demanding operations.

Following a visit to Cheshire-based Tiger Trailers’ purpose-built facility in 2022 by Leigh Anscombe, Johnsons’ National Transport Manager, the order for the trailers was placed initially, with the first delivered in October 2023, during which time the first twenty 18-tonne rigids were also manufactured.

Anscombe comments: “From our first introduction to Ignacio and Tiger Trailers we were impressed with the setup of the business and the attention we received as a potential customer. This has continued since placing numerous large orders through Tiger Trailers, with communication from Ignacio being fantastic and constantly keeping us aware of the situation and any changes. Issues that were encountered along the way and could have potentially arisen were communicated, headed off and dealt with before becoming a problem because of this.”

“The first batch of vehicles have been on our fleet for close to six months now during our busiest period and show no signs of wear and tear. This is what we would expect from a company such as Tiger and feel it is reflected in the overall finish and build quality of the product and service we have received”, he adds.

Due to the intense operation, strength was a primary requirement when identifying a supplier for the new fleet additions, and Johnsons’ Tiger-built rigids and trailers have been tailored with this in mind, each featuring Anchorfix steel plates impregnated within their GRP-faced sidewalls to provide enhanced protection for the load securing tracks, mitigating damage from frequent cage loading.
The initial twenty rigids are based on DAF LF 4×2 chassis and their specification includes a bespoke aerodynamic kit and a rear-sloping roofline for improved air flow, a full-closure Dhollandia 1,500kg cantilever tail-lift, and ventilators in the roof to combat damp laundry loads. Three different full-print liveries were applied across these vehicles, which have entered service throughout Johnsons’ nationwide fleet.

Tiger’s double deck solution comes in tri-axle box van step-frame guise, with these trailers providing support to the laundry specialist’s rigid fleet and regional hubs by transporting up to 74 cages during times of peak demand. The neck of the trailer offers additional storage space for loose laundry items, aided by an internal tail-lift. The fixed full-length upper deck is rated at 10,000kg and is constructed of steel overlaid with phenolic floor, with a steel durbar crash plate at the rear. The reversing spot lamps on each side have been fitted at a 45-degree offset behind the rear axle to elevate safety and visibility during low-speed manoeuvring around yards and hotel car parks. Completing the trailers’ specification is a gated Dhollandia 2500kg twin-tier column tail-lift.

Iggy Torres-Manzi, Tiger Trailers’ Technical Sales Manager, comments: “Tiger and myself are proud to have both brought on a new customer, and manufactured Johnsons’ latest fleet additions – it’s always exciting to develop two different products for a customer. The durability enhancements we have incorporated are sure to result in these new rigids and trailers becoming invaluable assets in their network, and they look fantastic in the company’s iconic blue, complemented by the different full-print wraps. It’s been a pleasure to work with Leigh, and we look forward to supporting the customer going forward, through the delivery of their future orders and beyond.”

Johnsons Hotel Linen’s additional thirty-two Tiger rigids will be introduced to the operator’s fleet in Spring 2024, comprised of sixteen DAF and sixteen Mercedes-Benz Trucks chassis. Tiger is also manufacturing a brace of 7.5-tonne rigids for the laundry specialist’s Northern Ireland operation.
