Pedestrian Awareness Camera added to Forklifts

Yale Lift Truck Technologies has announced a new pedestrian awareness camera solution, the latest addition to the Yale Reliant™ portfolio of active alert and assist technologies, which are designed to boost operator awareness and help support overall warehouse safety. The pedestrian awareness camera system can accurately identify pedestrians at ranges up to 6 metres through a 120-degree field of view and provides automatic alerts to the lift truck operator when a pedestrian is detected.

“Operator awareness is a foundational element of lift truck and pedestrian safety, and the Yale Reliant technology portfolio is designed to provide a helping hand for warehouses facing an increasingly transient labour pool and inexperienced lift truck operators,” says Daniel Heap, Manager, Product & Commercial – Technology & Connected Fleet, for Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “We’re continuing to target the challenges of real-world warehouse environments with research and development, and the pedestrian awareness camera solution offers the capability and configurability real-world warehouse environments need.”

Operations can get the camera system with audible and visual alerts only, or take advantage of a third type of notification with the addition of optional traction alerts. Upon pedestrian detection, an audible tone and a light indicates which zone the pedestrian is in, shown on the truck-mounted operator LED Display. Traction alerts go a step further by providing the operator with a perceptible alert through truck deceleration. While the operator remains in ultimate control of the equipment, this deceleration effect is intended to get their attention and encourage action to avoid the detected pedestrian by slowing down, steering away or both.

The pedestrian awareness detection system was developed using extensive amounts of real-world photographic data. It adapts to low light conditions and various environments. The system is optimised for travel speeds of 8 km per hour or less (though higher speeds are available). This gives operators ample time to identify alerts, and to react to avoid contact. The camera is mounted to the rear, forks-trailing side of the lift truck. The audible and traction alerts stop as the truck travels away from the detected pedestrian, and they are no longer in view of the camera.

The pedestrian awareness camera marks the latest addition to the award-winning Yale Reliant lineup of operator assist technologies, which take input from the work environment and equipment to alert operators of potential hazards and adjust lift truck performance. Yale Reliant initially launched globally in 2021, and has since accumulated over 24 million hours of run time on more than 8,300 units deployed in the field.

New Electric Series Forklift Introduced

Yale Lift Truck Technologies introduces the new ERP2.2-3.5N electric lift truck series, designed to help warehouses optimise efficiency and flexibility with the power of battery electric forklifts. With a versatile range of optional features, the Series N forklifts can lift up to 3.5 tonnes, delivering the performance and flexibility to meet specific operational needs.

“The new Yale® Series N electric forklift is built on a foundation of proven performance, delivering the reliability that warehouses will recognise from Yale, but reinvented for the challenges of today’s dynamic operations,” says Fraser Brash, Regional Product Manager, for Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “In its standard configuration, the new Yale Series N electric lift trucks enhance productivity, and ergonomics. The new Series N electric models can flex to both indoor and outdoor tasks, making them well suited to a wide range of industries, including auto parts, 3PL (third party logistics), retail, furniture, food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, and many others. The introduction of the new electric Series N lift trucks follows the launch of the Series N IC models in 2022. Both share many smart design features that contribute to an enhanced operator experience and excellent visibility, boosting confidence and efficiency.

Reliable, Reinvented, Recharged

Like their IC counterparts, the new Series N electric models offer a spacious cabin with a user-friendly touch screen as standard. Further customisations for the operator environment include dual joystick hydraulic controls, and a variety of comfortable seat options.

Meanwhile, the mast offers excellent visibility through the two channels, considered best in class. What’s more, a zero-turn radius, provides better manoeuvrability in tight warehouse spaces.
To support safe operation in certain applications, the Dynamic Stability System (DSS) option helps to enhance stability and reduce the likelihood of tip overs. It delivers audio and visual alerts and restricts the truck’s performance when operated outside set parameters. Such as limiting traction speed when the mast is raised to a certain height.

The Yale ERP2.2-3.5N Series N electric lift trucks are also engineered to allow for the integration of Yale Reliant™ operator assist system (OAS). This optional technology may help certain operations to manage risk, reduce damage, and encourage correct operator behaviours.

“A key innovation with this Yale electric forklift is the ability for customers to specify the motor option that best suits their application and priorities. The standard option includes AC induction motors for both the drive and hydraulic pump, ideal for many warehouses. However, the enhanced motor package may be better suited to those with higher intensity operations,” explains Brash.

The enhanced motor option includes permanent magnet drive motors and a permanent magnet hydraulic pump. This provides higher performance and better energy efficiency, which may help certain operations to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) over time.

The new Series N models also provide potential savings and lower TCO by helping to reduce maintenance expenses. Electric forklifts feature fewer drivetrain components and less complexity, lowering overall maintenance requirements. Battery flexibility allows businesses to select the battery that excels for their operations while managing costs.

A choice of lithium-ion, lead acid, or TPPL (Thin Plate Pure Lead) batteries meets differing requirements. For instance, the battery box replacement (BBR) design for the lithium-ion battery option may minimise long-term costs by enabling easier battery replacement and second-life use. Additionally, zero exhaust emissions in operation, can also contribute towards a company’s sustainability goals.

Dynamic Warehousing with New Pallet Truck

Yale Lift Truck Technologies has added an order picker pallet truck to its line-up of flexible warehouse equipment. The new solution, which previewed at LogiMAT 2024, is designed to help dynamic warehouse and intralogistics operations optimise order picking efficiency, while helping to reduce costs for applications which also need to load and unload lorries.

“Warehouses are having to find ways to pick more orders, more efficiently, not least because the retail and eCommerce industries continue to boom,” says Monica Radavelli, Product Manager for Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “Rethinking equipment fleets, and how they are used, presents a great opportunity for intralogistics operations to meet picking deadlines while navigating mounting costs.”

“The new Yale order picket pallet truck is a multi-purpose solution that gives businesses more flexibility.  It can reduce the number of trucks needed in a warehouse, and helps speed up certain operations,” Monica continues.

The Yale MO20-30X series trucks, which lift from two to three tonnes, provide many of the typical functions of a traditional Yale low level order picker but with added agility to load and unload lorries. This is thanks to smart design which puts operators in a different position and includes improved ground clearance, allowing the truck to work on ramps.

New Pallet Picker allows for dynamic warehousing

With this new Yale solution, orders can be picked and then driven directly onto a lorry. As loads do not need transferring between trucks, this saves time, and can help reduce the number of trucks needed in a mixed operation, helping control costs. Operator Assistance Optimises Warehouse Practices

Yale Lift Truck Technologies has launched Yale Reliant – an advanced suite of operator assistance technologies that help reinforce lift truck best practices in warehouses and intralogistics operations. The innovation was shown for the first time in Europe at LogiMAT 2024.

At the heart of Yale Reliant is advanced dynamic stability technology. This adjusts performance of the lift truck or warehouse equipment in real time, assisting the operator to not exceed the truck’s capabilities. This may be a reduction in travel speed or truck acceleration, or a reduction in lift speed or tilt speed. Whatever movement may potentially lead to an instability incident can be reduced in intensity or blocked altogether, all while the operator remains in ultimate control of the equipment. Yale Reliant also provides audible and visual alerts to aid compliance with best practices.

“Warehouse environments are often complex, and operations are increasingly under pressure to increase throughput and orders picked. The power of Yale Reliant comes from three core technologies. Proximity detection is provided by local or real-time location technologies that use tags on equipment, pedestrians, and infrastructure. This enables truck-to-truck, truck-to-pedestrian, and truck-to-beacon detection. Lidar-based technology (light detection and ranging) is leveraged to detect obstacles without proximity tags in the path of travel. Meanwhile, advanced dynamic stability provides advanced traction, hydraulic, and overload control to support truck stability.

Operator Assistance

These integrated technologies combine to give warehouses different ways to harness the benefits of Yale Reliant. For instance, a warehouse may use the system to control equipment speed in order to maintain a specific following distance between equipment. If required, location-based rules can also be set. For example, limiting travel speed at the end of aisles or excluding certain equipment from pedestrian areas. Warehouses can also set up the system to restrict travel and lift functions or reduce speed to avoid stability issues.

New Hyster Reach Truck Goes Outside

Hyster has introduced a new Reach Truck that works inside and outside providing even more flexibility for storage, handling and loading operations. The robust new RO1.6-2.0 Reach Truck models, for lifts up to two tonnes, feature Super Elastic tyres for load and drive wheels for use on uneven, outdoor ground conditions, as well as in indoor warehouse operations.
Optional cabs are also available for applications requiring frequent outdoor usage.

“With the new Hyster Outdoor Reach Truck, we have created a ‘2-in-1’ truck to help Power Your Possibilities on sites with mixed indoor and outdoor operations,” says Monica Radavelli, Product Manager Warehouse for Hyster. “You can retrieve pallets indoors and then load them into lorries outside, or you can efficiently unload lorries with varying floor conditions, before putting the pallets away in the warehouse – all with the same truck.

“The Super Elastic tyres are particularly effective at absorbing the effects of uneven ground, making it comfortable for drivers while giving the Hyster durability that tough applications depend on,” she continues.

For added flexibility and warehouse optimisation, the new Hyster Outdoor Reach Truck also supports operations in narrow warehouse aisles, with a more compact design compared to most counterbalance lift trucks. 3-stage FFL masts, with tilting and side shifting forks, support a lifting height of up to 7.5m in the warehouse.

To optimise productivity further, the new Hyster Outdoor Reach Truck is available with a lithium-ion battery option. This enables rapid opportunity charging during breaks, with no adverse effect on the battery, to support multi-shift operations and maximise fleet uptime.

“Lithium-ion batteries give you Clean Power that Means Business,” says Radavelli. “No gassing or watering is required, and there is no risk of acid spills. Depending on local regulations, space may also be maximised as, instead of a designated charging room, the truck can be simply plugged in to top up its charge throughout the day. Multi-shift operations may also be able to reduce their battery fleet.”

In addition to a choice of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries and different chargers, a number of options are also available to enable businesses to power productivity in their specific application. For instance, telescopic forks can be added to the Outdoor Reach Trucks to increase the range of possible pallet positions, or to provide flexibility for operations that may need to load or unload lorries from one side only.

Other options include semi and full cabs, full cab heating, and wiper options, to optimise the driver experience when the truck is in regular use outdoors. The truck can also be customised with different seat, steering and display options, and a range of cameras and lights to assist operators in dark yards or busy warehouses.

Visualisation adds Value to Warehouse Scenario Planning

Intralogistics operations could better manage unexpected changes in the warehouse by using visualisation and simulation tools for scenario planning, suggests Yale Lift Truck Technologies.

“The warehousing industry is constantly changing,” says Ron Farr, Director, Warehouse Sales – EMEA for Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “Businesses in industries such as retail, e-commerce, 3PL, food, and beverage, not only need to specify a fleet that works for them right now, but also consider how that equipment might adapt with them in the future.”

Efficient flowthrough and efficient use of site storage are vital in intralogistics. So, to support warehouse applications, data driven simulation and up to date visualisation solutions are available now from Yale and its global network of independent local dealers.

The Yale Warehouse Simulator is bespoke software that allows us to design different warehouse layout options based on real world situations. It uses complex mathematical calculations to provide statistics on fleet performance and efficiency, based on various scenarios.

“Growth within a business is a positive change, but one consequence is that it can lead to inefficient and poorly thought-out materials handling operations,” Ron explains. “If the economy then changes for the worse, how can a business know what to change to become more productive in the warehouse? Or how it may impact other parts of the business. It helps to look at the layout in detail to understand how high they need to go, where to put racking, what configuration of trucks is right, and whether they need a VNA or a Reach Truck, for example.”

The Yale Warehouse Simulator allows experimentation with different layouts, equipment configurations and timings, in 2D and 3D, with data analysis. This can support scenario planning to help businesses to be as prepared as possible for unknown warehouse changes.

A simulation model is created based on the real world, including detail such as which different trucks could be used to perform certain tasks, maintenance rates, how various parts of the warehouse perform, numbers of pallets, possible areas of congestion in staging lanes, or numbers of lorries used in order to optimise flow and productivity. This enables Yale and its dealers to advise the optimum mix of Yale equipment to meet the warehouse’s needs.

“The issue with spreadsheet techniques and some simulation software is that it’s inflexible, and often doesn’t make calculations based around interaction between equipment, such as traffic.” Ron Farr adds. “What’s great about the Yale Warehouse Simulator is that it allows us to explore different options and help businesses move into the future with confidence.”

Yale Add-ons Help Optimise Warehouse Safety

Yale Lift Truck Technologies has launched two specially engineered operator assistance options to support warehouse safety and intralogistics operations. Available via its Special Products Engineering Department (SPED), the Reverse Speed System and Dynamic Pedestrian Awareness Lights, can be fitted to selected Yale® electric lift truck models and may help to optimise operational safety and efficiency.

“Yale Lift Truck Technologies is focused on producing technology-enabled lift trucks for warehouse and intralogistics operations that support productivity, efficiency, and reduced costs,” says Robert O’Donoghue, Vice President Marketing and Solutions EMEA, Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “Intralogistics operations can stay competitive, by adopting the latest technologies. The new forklift add-on solutions provide a way for warehouses to specify reliable equipment that is designed to meet their application and operators’ requirements.”

The patent-pending Reverse Speed System is available for Yale electric lift trucks, which are well suited to indoor warehouse operations. As an operator assistance option, it is suitable for use in warehouses across many industries, such as food distribution, beverage manufacturing, or auto parts distribution. However, it may be particularly useful where high numbers of temporary or agency staff are employed, such as in retail and e-commerce warehouses, or third-party logistics (3PL) operations.

The system includes a sensor next to the rear drive handle, which detects when a hand is positioned on the handle. When the sensor is activated, it allows the truck to reach full reverse speed. If the sensor is not activated the reverse speed is limited to 2 km/h. Holding the handle encourages the operator to look in the direction of travel whilst reversing which is standard practice and important for keeping clear of pedestrians and objects in the path of travel. When the sensor is activated, the forward speed is limited to 8 km/h to minimise operator bypass of the system.

“Warehouses may find that the Reverse Speed System can help to enhance efficiency and productivity, keeping lift trucks and the operation moving, whilst supporting safety,” says Robert. “Certain operations may also benefit from the new Dynamic Pedestrian Awareness Lights option.”

These compact LED lights can be front and/or rear mounted on most Yale electric forklifts, and are direction activated. They work in a similar way to ‘spot’ pedestrian lights, except that they display a dynamic, repeating, “progressively flashing” blue arrow pattern on the floor. This pattern provides visible indication to nearby pedestrians or truck operators that a lift truck is approaching, as well as indicating what direction it is approaching from.

“Fast paced intralogistics operations may have a high number of pedestrians who could potentially benefit from this solution,” says Robert. “Equally, it may be useful in warehouses where there are blind corners, cross aisles, or unloading operations with sub-optimal visibility conditions.”

This option may also support operational efficiency as it helps minimise the risk of disruption due to potential incidents. It may also help minimise the risk of damage to stock and infrastructure, and the associated costs.

For intralogistics operations and warehouses that operate lift trucks outdoors, either in loading or storage areas, Dynamic Pedestrian Awareness Lights can also be supplied with selected Yale internal combustion forklifts. However, operations must take into account the fact that LED lights can be completely invisible in brightly lit conditions, such as in daylight.

Yale Lift Truck Technologies has appointed Ron Farr to a new role as Director, Warehouse Sales – EMEA, helping to continue to drive the brand’s focus on the intralogistics industry.

In his role, Farr will support the independent Yale Dealer Partners across the region in providing customers with the right materials handling solutions to meet their operational requirements. The creation of this new position demonstrates the importance Yale places on developing its capabilities and solutions for the fast-evolving warehouse sector.

“I’m excited about this new position because my entire life has been about warehouse trucks, and I see customer engagement with a warehouse machine as slightly different to that of the counterbalance truck,” says Farr, who has worked for the organisation for almost 25 years.
