Hiab Kit to Feature Connectivity as Standard From Later This Year

Hiab, part of Cargotec, will connect the majority of its equipment* as a standard feature from factory, starting in the second half of 2019. Customers will get equipment prepared for the future and enabled for its Connected Services, such as HiConnect(TM).

HiConnect lets Hiab customers receive insights to improve safety and utilisation, as well as keeping track of service needs based on actual usage. Connectivity also enables a new level of service support, such as remote diagnostics and troubleshooting.

Advanced Hiab equipment has for several years had the ability to record usage and equipment status. This data has been captured in the equipment and only used in service instances by Hiab. With connectivity, all data can be accessed anytime, anywhere – enabling business-critical insights for Hiab customers.

“This is our most important cross-equipment investment ever. It will accelerate our ongoing work of innovating our equipment offering, connected services and new solutions to improve our customers’ business. For Hiab it’s a big step towards becoming the load handling service and solution provider we want to be,” says Jan-Erik Lindfors, Hiab’s Vice President for New Business Solutions.

The aim is to connect all of Hiab load handling equipment, which has the technical capability, over the next few years from factory. Furthermore, present customers will get the option to retrofit connectivity for used equipment. The retrofit option is available to order now for a broad selection of Hiab products.

Element Logic Developing Cutting-Edge Robotics Technology

Element Logic’s AutoStore experts are developing cutting-edge robotics technology which they claim has the potential to transform intralogistics for years to come.

From a lab in the basement of Element Logic’s headquarters, a group of software engineers are developing new technology that could advance intralogistics to the next level, says the company.

Element Logic has teamed-up with American robotics company RightHand Robotics (RHR) to launch a commercial test project that combines Element Logic’s AutoStore expertise with RHR’s robotics technology. The new invention integrates RHR’s ingenious RightPick robotic piece picking system with Element Logic’s unique and flexible software system for managing AutoStore.

“This is the future of intralogistics. This is cutting edge technology. Our new RHR project could help to further enhance Element Logic’s AutoStore solution. We are still in the test phase, but we are encouraged by the advances our team of experts have made so far,” says Steinar Overbeck Cook, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Element Logic.

Collaboration for Oakland International and Jungheinrich

Food distribution specialist Oakland International and Jungheinrich UK have announced a long-term contract that they say will combine cutting edge technology and optimised processes to deliver business and environmental advantages across Oakland’s supply chain operations.

Oakland Business Unit Director at Corby, Lee Whiting (above), commented: “We’re delighted to be working in collaboration with Jungheinrich. We both have complementary qualities with Jungheinrich’s intralogistics expertise, offering Oakland the opportunity to fully optimise location positioning and reduce our carbon footprint through reduced battery cycles and charging optimisation.

“Our alliance signals long-term relationship stability with proven reliability and service and is exceptional to anything else currently in the marketplace.”

The partnership will support the growth at Oakland’s Corby site, from 6000 pallets to 15000 pallet capability, and together with freezer investment has opened new business opportunities and contracts.

Steve Richmond, Director – Logistics Systems, Jungheinrich UK, added: “To cater to the rising number of temperature sensitive products entering the supply chain, Oakland required a multi-temperature storage facility that was fully optimised for maximum capacity and operational efficiency. We are pleased to be working with Oakland to provide a complete, bespoke mobile racking and material handling solution that will ensure those demands are met, both now and in the future. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration with Oakland and to supporting their continued growth.”

Oakland International’s key focus is to add value to its customers and partners and operates site and facilities in the UK, Ireland and has a partner in Spain, and is a leading expert at reducing food losses in the supply chain due to load contamination.

Work Underway on DPD’s New £150m Super Hub

Work on DPD’s new £150m state-of-the-art parcel hub in Hinckley, Leicestershire is well underway. Aerial footage shows the giant footprint of the 276,454 sq ft main hub building and infrastructure work taking place on the rest of the 39 acre site.

The new hub will be DPD’s fifth in the UK and the largest domestic parcel hub in Europe. It will be located close to J1 of the M69, as part of the 82 acre Hinckley Park development, being delivered by IM Properties. The new facility will be just 2 miles from two other key DPD sites in the area; Hub 4 and the firm’s International Gateway, both of which opened in Sketchley in 2015.

The Hub 5 site is the size of 22 football pitches and the main hub building is 502 metres long and 40 metres wide. It will be DPD’s most secure and technologically advanced hub, fitted out with the very latest fully automated sortation technology, the optical character recognition software to automatically scan address information, over 300 security cameras and more than 3,000 metres of conveyor. When fully operational in 2022, the giant hub will be able to sort 72,000 parcels per hour.

The new film, which clearly shows the foundations of the new hub and the structure beginning to take shape, can be viewed here: DPD Hinckley Hub 5 film
