UK Ecommerce Fulfilment Innovator Posts Record Growth

UK fulfilment services and technology provider fulfilmentcrowd has reported record-breaking growth in the financial year ending 31st March 2019, increasing its turnover by 42% to £6.7 million.

Strong customer acquisition, supported by the burgeoning eCommerce sector, a rebrand and upgraded software platform, saw fulfilmentcrowd welcome on board 115 new clients during the last 12 months. This represents a fourfold increase on the previous year, which was driven largely by the benefits of fulfilmentcrowd’s new onboarding platform.

Growth has been particularly strong in the health, beauty and fashion retail sectors, with high-profile contract wins including Bear Grylls Ventures, Bamboo Bamboo and Banco Santander.

fulfilmentcrowd’s future success will be driven by its innovative sharing model, which provides elastic storage and dispatch capacity through a network of Fulfilment Network Partner centres (“FNPs”). Total managed capacity now stands at 95,000 sq ft across six UK sites, with more than 25,000 items dispatched per day in surge conditions such as Black Friday.

Sales and marketing director, Lee Thompson, is pleased with progress and explains: “We have proven a radically new approach to eCommerce logistics and this will soon take on an international flavour with the opening of new partner centres across the globe, putting us in a great position to sustain our growth post-Brexit.

“Importantly, our turnover growth is driving better margins as we leverage higher volumes and world-leading technology to make productivity gains across the business. However, this will not be at any cost and our recently-introduced Lorax initiative will ensure sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our objective is to become the UK’s first fully sustainable fulfilment provider by 2021 supported by investment in renewables, reduced energy consumption, elimination of plastic waste and low-emission delivery.”

Low-Level Order Picking Truck Range Released by Linde

Linde Material Handling is renewing its order-picking truck range, claiming the most comprehensive product portfolio in the industry. Eight new models of the Linde N20 C low-level order picker are the first to be launched. They ensure comfortable, safe and above all cost-efficient order picking in the load range between 1.2 and 2.5 tons.

From home improvement stores to food wholesalers, from the automotive industry to contract logistics, the picking of goods is a core task in every warehouse. It’s also a very cost-intensive one, due to the high proportion of manual activities involved. Linde says it has attached particular importance to user support when developing its new trucks: Even the standard versions of these order pickers, which can reach speeds of up to 14 km/h, offer a high level of driver comfort, which can be enhanced through additional optional equipment depending on the application needs.

Demands have grown steadily during recent years. Pick rates and throughput times must be increased, error rates reduced, and the health-related absence of employees prevented. “With the various versions of our new order picker, customers can keep their logistics costs under control in traditional person-to-goods applications and increase the efficiency of their warehouse,” says Eloïse Lévêque, International Product Manager at Linde Material Handling.

Increased ergonomics for more efficient processes
With the arrangement of the battery, driver’s stand-on platform and load-handling module, Linde Material Handling has adopted the standard market design for the N20 C, which is particularly beneficial for operators of mixed fleets: Drivers do not have to rethink the operation of the vehicle when switching back and forth between trucks from different manufacturers. The low entry height of merely 130 millimeters and the wide vehicle access (428 or 418 millimeters depending on the model in question) make it easy to enter and leave the driver’s platform, something which is required frequently during day-to-day order picking.

Ergonomically positioned handles provide a secure hold, even when reversing. Optional equipment features include the pneumatically damped stand-on platform, which reduces the impact and shocks experienced by the driver when the truck is used on uneven ground. The standardly padded backrest, which provides for a safe position while driving, can optionally be adjusted to suit the operator’s height. A fold-out driver’s seat (with sensor for driver recognition) is also integrated for longer distances or waiting times. Additional comfort when sitting is ensured by the optionally available padded knee protection.

Everything in view
The Linde N20 C is operated via the new, height-adjustable steering wheel – a highlight of the new industrial truck generation. Rocker switches for forward and reverse driving are integrated into the round shape which has a rubberized surface for optimum grip. They can be operated on both sides using the thumb or index finger. To ensure driving is as distraction-free as possible, the Linde engineers have deliberately positioned the multi-function color display below the steering wheel. The clearly arranged screen displays the most important information relevant to the truck – from the state of the battery charge to service instructions.

Connected and safe
Picking is usually carried out in a very busy environment, which entails increased risk of material damage and accidents – and thus higher risk of unplanned consequential costs and operational disruptions. To prevent this, the Linde N20 C comes with a whole range of standard and optionally available safety features. Extremely important for the driver is the excellent view of the driveway and load. Additional features include the hydraulically assisted braking unit – which is one of a total of three braking systems on board. It varies the braking effect of the order picker in relation to the load picked up. The Linde Curve Control system reduces the speed in relation to the steering angle and prevents tip-over accidents when navigating corners. To reduce expensive damage to shelves, goods or the vehicle itself, special bumpers can be mounted on the front of the truck. Additional equipment features such as powerful LED front headlamps, the Linde BlueSpot, front panoramic mirror, protective screens or grids for the mast and various load guards round off the range of offerings.

Scanner Specialist Denso Wave Europe Launches Smart Glove

The latest cableless scanner from Denso Wave Europe, part of the Toyota group, is to be a smart glove. The company says the glove will weigh just 80 grams and is one of the lightest scanners of its kind. Users in warehouse management and logistics environments can wear the smart glove attached to their wrist. This offers the opportunity to work with both hands at the same time thus increasing work safety. The new innovative scanner is extremely robust and helps ensure a safe working environment.

Kaber Kolioutsis, Marketing Communication Specialist at Denso Wave Europe, explains: “The biggest advantage of our new smart glove is that users, for example in logistics, have both hands free to handle goods. This makes certain tasks much easier, for example, order picking, and helps increase work safety.” Furthermore, the Wearable SF1 is extremely robust, which is an essential feature in warehousing and logistics. Because of its inner frame made of magnesium, the Wearable SF1 can withstand up to 3,000 drops from a height of half a metre.

EGIM Adds New Rail Links to Rotterdam-Germany Portfolio

Hamburg-based container transport provider EUROGATE Intermodal (EGIM) has added new rail links to its portofolio. From 1 July 2019, it will offer three weekly direct connections each between the port of Rotterdam and the inland depots of Kornwestheim, Munich and Nuremberg.

EGIM says it is responding to increasing cargo flows via Western ports and the associated increase in demand for maritime transport intermodal services. As a multi-user port, Rotterdam is particularly well suited for these routes.

The services connect the sites in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg directly to the seaport terminals ECT Delta and Euromax on Maasvlakte I in the port of Rotterdam. The APMT and RWG terminals on Maasvlakte II are reached via the Rotterdam PortShuttle. Connections to the port of Antwerp are available on request.

The direct links support the EU’s goal to increase the share of container transports by rail or barge from 18% to 30% by the year 2030.

Meet EGIM next week at transport logistic in Munich at hall B4 stand 111/210.

The Company unveiled a 12.6% rise in EPRA NAV of 137.96p per share and total dividends for the year of 7.0p, generating a 17.7% Total Accounting Return well ahead of its 10%-15% target range.

Dachser Completes Emission-Free Urban Delivery Plan in Stuttgart

Major 3PL Dachser says its vehicle mix for emission-free deliveries in Stuttgart city centre is now complete with the delivery of all-electric 18-ton Mercedes-Benz eActros.

As soon as employees have been briefed and completed all the requisite training, Dachser will integrate the eActros into its ongoing test operations in Stuttgart. As with the all-electric 7.5-ton FUSO eCanter, the truck will be used in professional driver training. “We’ll be using the eActros for transporting deliveries both directly to customers and to the microhub in the Heslach district of Stuttgart. From there, pedelecs are used for the last mile,” explains Markus Maurer, General Manager of Dachser’s Kornwestheim branch.

The eActros has a payload of 4 to 5 metric tons, depending on the design, and offers space for 18 pallets. With a range of 200 km, it is ideal for daily delivery transports in and around Stuttgart city centre. Its 240 kWh lithium-ion batteries charge in 2 hours at 150 kW. According to the Mercedes-Benz Trucks division, the prototype is set to go into large-scale production in 2021.

In conducting these test operations, Dachser is gathering the data and experience it needs to determine the right vehicle mix for sustainable deliveries of groupage shipments to city centers. In addition to Stuttgart, tests are also underway in Berlin, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Málaga, Mannheim, Paris, Tübingen, and Ulm.

“We’re not looking to take a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, we want to come up with a range of solutions, each of them focused on optimizing deliveries, routes, and times,” says Stefan Hohm, Corporate Director, Corporate Solutions, Research & Development at Dachser. Holm heads the City Distribution innovation project.
