US Car Parts Supplier Optimises with New WMS

A leading US online auto parts supplier and distributor is optimising inventory, space and resources within its fulfilment center, via a WMS supplied by SnapFulfil.

San Diego-based Buy Auto Parts operates in a highly competitive and aggressive market place where shipping the right part quickly, first time and on time is critical – and straight away the ROI from its new SnapFulfil Tier 1 WMS has seen efficiency-driving picks per hour increase by more than 50% since implementation.

“One of the biggest areas it’s helped improve is our pick, pack and ship operational efficiencies and the ability to wave orders,” says John Salvatore, vice president of Buy Auto Parts operations. “Being able to wave an order by its due-out date is a huge advantage if, for example, I want to wave my next-day air, international, urgent orders or Amazon orders. I can now prioritise them as I want.”

With a cloud-based WMS, Buy Auto Parts can also better manage their non-traditional summer peak season by maintaining deeper visibility into inventory levels and process efficiencies. This is especially helpful for bulkier inventory such as radiators, air conditioning compressors and wheel hub assemblies, plus other parts where they don’t carry large amounts of stock.

Mr Salvatore adds: “When the same item is housed in different areas of the warehouse, SnapFulfil picks from the lowest inventory level to the highest, so managers can better monitor supply levels. It intuitively knows, for example, to pick a carburetor from a stock of one rather than a carburetor from a stock of 10, thus maximising available space.”

Future plans include improving reverse logistics operations using the WMS, because some of the company’s products have several components – and it wants to be able to shorten the time items are re-stocked so customer refunds can be issued in a timely manner.

Additionally, Buy Auto Parts is working with SnapFulfil to create an enhanced inventory cycle count program, so it can enhance inventory accuracy to better serve its growing customer base and their ever-increasing delivery demands.

SnapFulfil MD, Tony Dobson, explains: “Managing a strong reverse logistics operation requires a healthy set of technology-driven automated procedures and systems, because they capture and evaluate increasingly important data sets from every step in the process. Being cloud-based, SnapFulfil offers immense flexibility to handle dynamic return operations as well as easy integration with other company systems to facilitate a much more holistic return operation.

“Another of SnapFulfil’s major benefits is the immediate productivity improvements made possible by the system’s automated task management functionality. In addition to accurately recording and verifying inbound goods at both receiving and put-away, it also drives a rolling inventory count allowing any discrepancies to be identified in a timely manner and records adjusted accordingly to maintain the highest levels of stock accuracy and integrity.”

Mobile Weighing Specialist RAVAS Buys LTS Scale

Mobile weighing specialist RAVAS, best known for its iForks product, has bought Ohio-based LTS Scale.

LTS Scale has been a renowned manufacturer of high precision fork lift scales since 1994. The company will be owned and managed by RAVAS.

The acquisition of LTS is in line with the RAVAS ambition to become the preferred global partner for innovative and quality mobile weighing solutions, supported by excellent services. Niels van den Berg, CEO of RAVAS, explains: “Recently, we have redefined our mission, vision and worldwide business strategy. We consider the United States to be one of the main growing markets in our mobile weighing sector. The combination of the LTS product range, with more NTEP certified scales, and a professional sales and service organization will enable us to further expand our market share in the US. We strongly believe that LTS is the right partner to support us in achieving our US based business goals.”

Until further notice, the LTS Scale brand name will remain active, together with RAVAS Europe and RAVAS USA, LLC.

Expansion Plans for UK Fulfilment Specialist Hallmark

UK-based fulfilment specialist Hallmark Consumer Services has kicked off expansion plans to double the size of its warehousing and fulfilment operations over the next five years, which it says will support its ongoing and projected growth and new business pipeline.

The Melton Mowbray-based fulfilment company originally purchased the 40,000 sq ft warehouse and depot as its UK headquarters in 2013, and since then it has recorded annual turnover of more than £5million each year.

The first phase of the five-year growth plan has involved the construction of a new 8,000 sq ft of bespoke storage and shelving space built as an upper floor mezzanine, creating an additional 2500 locations for carton picks and enhanced storage and shipping facility for an even greater range in goods size.

The construction has completed on time and ahead of the seasonal surge in client orders around Black Friday and in the run-up to Christmas, and Hallmark is shortly to launch its seasonal recruitment drive to help cope with demand.

Founded in 1992, Hallmark provides a range of outsourced services including bespoke fulfilment, contract packing, direct mail and logistics solutions to a range of clients.

New Baling Press Introduced by Strautmann

German bale specialist Strautmann has launched the BaleTainer, a fully automatic baling press for paper, cardboard and PET bottles. Whether by hand, by conveyor belt, by forklift or by wall connection, large and bulky materials can be thrown in conveniently, the Glandorf-based company says.

The BaleTainer winds the material, which is conveyed by a swingarm to the rotor, into the bale chamber. With 600kN press force, the recyclables are pressed into 450kg direct marketable bales. The bales are tied off fully automatically and sold to recyclers or paper mills to provide extra revenues. The compact design of the fully automatic machine allows internal installation directly at material source.

The new solution reduces 6 tons of cardboard a day at Osnabrück-based Wessels + Müller AG in the central warehouse, about 90 percent of the total.

Germany’s Largest Food Retailer to Build Fifth DC with Witron

EDEKA, the largest German food retailer, is to build its fifth logistics centre with WITRON using the Parkstein-based provider’s OPM technology. From the beginning of 2022, the new Oberhausen DC will supply almost 600 stores of the EDEKA-Regionalgesellschaft Rhein-Ruhr daily with more than 10,000 different items from its dry goods assortment. As a general contractor, WITRON is responsible for the design, integration, and service of all IT, and mechanical components for the dry goods assortment.

The main reason for the new project was the state of the regional warehouse in nearby Moers, which could no longer be modernised or expanded in a cost-efficient manner due to its age and location and which is now being integrated into the new logistics centre.

The facility with a size of 39,000 square metres / 420,000 square feet includes a total of 57,000 pallet locations, 450,000 tray locations, and 57 highly dynamic stacker cranes. It is designed to handle a daily pick capacity of 252,000 cases. Most of the cases are stacked fully automatically onto pallets and roll containers by 22 COM machines – without errors and in a store-friendly manner. Bulky goods are picked by logistics staff supported by a pick-by-voice system and controlled by the semi-automated WITRON Car Picking system (CPS). Parallel picking of several store orders onto one industrial truck is possible. The WITRON Display Pallet Picking System (DPP) places half, third, and quarter pallets fully automatically onto pallets and roll containers. An intelligent WITRON IT ecosystem ensures a holistic connection between all processes within the internal and external supply chain and thus guarantees a high degree of flexibility as well as process optimization in real-time.

As at the existing Edeka sites implemented by WITRON, in Hamm (EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr), Landsberg/Lech (EDEKA Südbayern), Zarrentin (EDEKA Nord), and Berbersdorf (EDEKA Nordbayern, Sachsen, Thüringen), a WITRON OnSite team will be responsible for the service and maintenance of all process and system components.

‘White Glove’ Logistics Provider Signs with Iconic Retailer Habitat

Two-man, white-glove delivery specialist Panther Warehousing has signed a two-year contract with iconic UK home furnishings brand Habitat. The companies have already been working together for the past two years.

Based in Northampton, Panther will continue to deliver bulky furniture such as sofas and beds for Habitat to customers seven days a week.

The partnership was forged in the wake of Habitat, founded in the swinging Sixties by style guru Sir Terence Conran, being bought by Sainsbury’s.

Habitat has been a by-word for original, affordable home furnishings for more than 50 years. Over 85% of customers now shop with the brand online at www.habitat.co.uk, but the store also has five standalone stores – in Westfield London, Tottenham Court Road, London, Finchley Road, London, Leeds and Brighton – as well as a network of Mini-Habitat stores within Sainsbury’s stores across the UK.

Delivering a best in class service is paramount to both Panther and Habitat and as such the two teams collaborate closely holding monthly meetings to monitor KPI’s, ensure a process of continuous improvement and discuss the introduction of new services.

Panther delivers all Habitat orders weighing more than 31 kilograms or are bulky enough to require two-man delivery. Customers can nominate a date of delivery that is convenient to them and book online.

Customers are kept in the loop, with a confirmatory text message the day before delivery and on the day, they will be advised of a two-hour delivery slot and told which number they are on their delivery team’s schedule for the day.

A track and trace system will also enable them to see where the delivery van is on its route shown on a map of their area. Crews will undertake soft assembly such as connecting corner sofas.

New Variants for Popular ULD Container Handler

The handling of ULD (Unit Load Device) containers is a key logistical task in the air cargo sector. From truck unloading and storage to the loading of the goods into the aircraft, various transport vehicles are used including Transfer Vehicles (TV), Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETV), stackers, dolly docks, truck docks and pallet movers. Hubtex and Dimos produce the only vehicle in the world that combines all the functions required for handling and transporting ULDs. The X-Way Mover, which was developed in accordance with IATA standards, already boasts four of the ten largest air cargo companies in the world among its customers, say the companies. The versatile vehicle with a low-emission electric drive has now been even further optimised and launched in two new variants (7 t and 14 t).

Air cargo often consists of time-sensitive goods such as life-saving medicines or perishable goods, e.g. food or plants. The X-Way Mover speeds up the handling of these goods, which are usually stored in ULD containers, because the transport vehicle single-handedly takes on the tasks of the truck dock, transfer vehicle, elevating transfer vehicle, pallet mover and dolly dock. This combined approach results in less downtime or no downtime at all during transport. The X-Way Mover pushes back the system boundaries and is capable of tackling the entire ULD handling process from landside to airside:

1. When the freight truck arrives, the X-Way Mover unloads the ULDs. At peak times two or more X-Way Movers can work as a team, using a vehicle as a truck dock.
2. The X-Way Mover drives directly to the workstation or racking system and transfers the ULDs into the rack. The X-Way Mover is usually able to reach the third storage level (at a height of 7.2 m).
3. When retrieving the ULDs from the workstation or racking system, the X-Way Mover picks up the ULDs and drives them directly onto the runway or loads a dolly train depending on the location of the aircraft.
4. Direct delivery of the ULDs to the aircraft: An X-Way Mover is used as a gangway (stationary), one or more X-Way Movers load the gangway from the logistics hall.

Cooperation creates synergy
The X-Way Mover has been used at airports around the world since the mid-2000s and has now been significantly improved. This further development is thanks to a collaboration agreed between Hubtex and Dimos in 2017. The two international manufacturers of industrial trucks and special vehicles work closely together exclusively in the field of air cargo. “As a result of our collaboration with Hubtex and their expertise in limitless 360° steering, we have created new technological capabilities for this product line to optimise the X-Way Mover”, explains Pascal Schütz who works in Sales and Development at Dimos Maschinenbau GmbH. “The new generation of our vehicle operates with low emissions and is extremely flexible thanks to the all-in-one approach. The X-Way Mover can act as a seamless extension to any kind of terminal or can be used in facilities with varied operating tasks – even in 24/7 operation”.

The new generation of the product range includes the X-Way Mover 140 and the smaller X-Way Mover 70. The X-Way Mover 140 has a maximum load capacity of 14,000 kg and is specially designed to handle 20-ft. ULD containers. The transport vehicle was designed for both indoor and outdoor use and is therefore equipped with soft elastic tyres. The vehicle is 7625 mm in length, 4760 mm in width and 3282 mm in height with a platform width of 2500 mm. The transfer height of the platform can be adjusted to between 200 mm and 7200 mm by means of a new mast system. The smaller X-Way Mover 70 has a maximum load capacity of 6800 kg. Since this vehicle specialises in the handling of 10-ft. ULD containers, the outer dimensions of 4563 x 4600 x 3282 mm are significantly reduced. The platform width remains 2500 mm.

Manoeuvrable and safe
Both X-Way Mover models have two masts for maximum stability. Depending on the area of application, the maximum speed of the vehicles is up to 15 km/h. However, the speed can be increased with the use of a different gear unit. One of the key enhancements of the new X-Way Mover generation is the introduction of the HX steering mechanism. It is now possible to change direction without stopping the vehicle. At the same time, the vehicle can be operated quietly and safely, even in the smallest of spaces. This results in less tyre wear, faster work cycles and easier operation for the driver.

The new, weather-proofed X-Way Mover cabin is very comfortable and boasts a redesigned information terminal, which displays the exact wheel position of the vehicle and much more besides. When transferring the load, the X-Way Mover’s 2500-mm wide roller conveyor is of primary importance. The conveyor is equipped with a robust, electro-hydraulic roller deck, which can be controlled proportionally. On the load transfer sides, the rollers are covered with rubber. The platform hub is powered electrically. Load protection can also be deployed on the load transfer side, with additional load protection in the middle of the platform for small ULDs.

Potential for zero-emission air cargo processes
For the very first time, the new X-Way Mover generation can be fitted with an 80-V electric drive to facilitate zero-emission work processes in airport logistics. Powerful lithium-ion batteries are available for the 80-V drive. These batteries offer fast charging times and are particularly recommended when the X-Way Mover is used across multiple shifts. Users of the X-Way Mover also benefit from the modular design of the transport device. “Customers with fairly simple application scenarios do not need a high-end solution, which is why the X-Way Mover offers an affordable entry-level price. Depending on customer requirements, the vehicle can be upgraded with various expansion packages. The customer is therefore prepared for any future developments”, explains Michael Röbig, Marketing Director of Hubtex Maschinenbau GmbH. “The versatility of the X-Way Mover reduces the downtime and operating costs that accrue in airport logistics as a result of the use of countless floor processing implements. When multiple X-Way Movers are used in parallel, there is no longer a risk of device failures since replacements for each ULD handling step are available on site.”

He adds: “As well as increased flexibility, the X-Way Movers also benefit from our automation strategy. We are gradually equipping the vehicle with new assistance systems that will improve airport logistics processes in the future.”
