Highland Threads to High Fashion Logistics

A European road freight specialist is helping EU trading, post-Brexit for Scottish exporters. One leading supplier of tartan carpets is gaining new momentum across the EU, following the demise of its export capabilities. Stevens & Graham initially struggled to access the EU market in the wake of Brexit, but its European exports now account for almost half of its production, and it has recently gained new contract work in Paris after finding a solution with Europa Road.

As part of one of Britain’s largest independent logistics providers, Europa Worldwide Group, the Europa Road Glasgow team is supporting the firm, which is the biggest global supplier of tartan carpets and rugs.

Stevens & Graham specialise in traditional wool-woven styles and is globally renowned for high-profile commercial projects including hospitality, retail, leisure, TV and film. The business’s post-Brexit challenge meant all exports were halted until it could identify a logistics solution that enables the smooth flow of goods into the continent. According to data from the Scottish Government, the EU is the country’s largest export destination, accounting for around 38 per cent of the total goods exports.

Elisa Elder (pictured, below), Glasgow Branch Manager, commented: “Stevens & Graham is renowned on a global scale, but initially struggled to access the EU market in the wake of Brexit. However, leveraging our Deliver Duty Paid (DDP) Europa Flow Service our team has helped transform the business’s exporting capabilities. Currently, 56 per cent of Europa’s groupage exports are shipped using DDP incoterms, as the firm continues to establish itself as a leader in European road logistics.”

“Most recently, Stevens & Graham have supplied a leading designer fashion brand in Paris, furnishing three bespoke showrooms. Our expertise in high-value, time-sensitive consignments meant that our team was able to support this important project by meeting tight deadlines through our own vehicles and network of local hauliers.”

A representative from Stevens & Graham added, “I’ve been consistently impressed with the outstanding service from the Europa team. From the moment I reached out, they have always been very prompt with shipping quotations, which makes dealing with our clients so much easier. The level of customer service is exceptional. On top of all that, their delivery times are always fast and reliable. It’s rare to find a logistics supplier that combines such speed, efficiency, and great communication.”

Offering hassle-free European Road freight services for every consignment size, in today’s post-Brexit landscape, Europa aims to ensure efficient, cost-effective, and seamless movement of goods between Europe and the UK. Following Brexit, Europa Road has marked several innovative milestones, including its £5 million investment in Europa Flow in 2021, which now accounts for 50 per cent of all groupage transport leaving the UK. Most recently, Europa has extended Flow to tackle the changes for businesses exporting to the European Union (EU) that will face new regulations at the border under Regime 42 (a post-Brexit customs process).

From the 1 January, DDP Flow – Importer’s Signature will provide a simplified option in which the receiver of goods in the EU signs an agreement, allowing Europa to act as an indirect representative to exempt VAT. All duties and charges remain billed back to the exporter, ensuring consignments move seamlessly across borders.

Alternatively, DDP Flow – Own French VAT Number will enable exporters to remain legally responsible for fulfilling customs requirements (known as Importer of Record) while Europa manages the administration for a French VAT number and associated reporting on its shipments free of charge.

Europa Worldwide Group is one of the largest independent logistics operators in the UK and has a customs presence at key EU points of entry and exit, being the largest customs broker in Calais. Europa controls both the transport and the clearance on behalf of its customers rather than relying on third-party support.

Adrian Redmile, Branch and Sales Director at Europa Worldwide Group, commented:

“From the very beginning, it’s been our aspiration to build Europa into a company that is internationally recognised while providing a great local service for regional exporters. We recognise the importance of driving operations forward and contributing to the economy. Each of our expert local teams plays a pivotal role in our wider operation, ensuring each customer receives an exceptional service.”

99% Sustainable Fuel for F1 Team Truck Logistics

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is pleased to announce 99% coverage of HVO100 biofuel across the European race and marketing truck logistics this season.

Marking the latest milestone in a journey towards Net Zero and building on success from 2024, the F1 team has been increasing HVO100 coverage in its internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks across the European races since 2022. This year’s programme was again made possible by the continued partnership and commitment of title and technical partner, PETRONAS, and the logistics suppliers.

Since an initial pilot of HVO100 began with a trial during the 2022 season, the F1 team has avoided the emission of over 1,190 tCO2e across its European race and marketing truck logistics.

The team’s long-term ambitions are now to explore HVO100 usage in race locations outside of Europe and extend the use of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks e-fleet across future European seasons, reinforcing the role that Formula One can play as the world’s fastest test lab.

Following a successful pilot at the 2025 British Grand Prix in July, the team completed its first long-distance journey using the all-electric Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 in August, transporting the current W16 race cars from Brackley, Buckinghamshire to Zandvoort – a 673km journey – for the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix. With rapid charging capabilities, the eActros 600 can reduce lifecycle CO2e emissions by up to 80% compared to a diesel equivalent.

Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, said,

“Our sustainability strategy is built on innovation on and off the track, and the expansion of HVO100 across 99% of our European season’s race and marketing truck logistics is testament to this. Every kilometre travelled using biofuel moves us closer to Net Zero by 2040, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable high performance. We are proud to be driving change, not just on track, but across every part of our operations. In line with our ambition to become one of the most sustainable global professional sports teams, we are committed to achieving Net Zero for total Race Team Control emissions by 2030 and full Net Zero across all scopes by 2040.”

Mahou San Miguel Automated Warehouse

AR Racking has been chosen by Mahou San Miguel to design, manufacture and install the high-density racking system for its new logistics platform adjacent to Spain’s largest brewery in Alovera, Guadalajara. The contract is part of the 80 million euros that the brewery has allocated to position its operations at the forefront of technology and consolidates AR Racking as a leading partner in large-scale projects.

The racking supplied by AR Racking will form part of an automated warehouse which will be installed in a 69,000 m² warehouse and will store up to 100,000 beer and water pallets. The facility, which will have 71 automated bays and an elevated walkway of 135 m, will directly connect packaging lines with the warehouse.

The project is also a benchmark for sustainability and regional development. Its compact design reduces internal movement around the warehouse and minimises CO2 emissions. This approach reflects AR Racking’s commitment to sustainability as a differential value and is fully aligned with the environmental strategy of Mahou San Miguel. In turn it revitalises the industrial fabric of the Henares Corridor and consolidates the area as a national strategic logistics hub.

“Our goal is to provide Mahou San Miguel with a ready-made solution for the future: scalable and aligned with its service and sustainability goals…thanks to our own engineering and manufacturing in Navarra we guarantee deadlines, quality and timely support throughout the life cycle of the facility”.

said Julen Arrillaga, AR Racking Project Manager.

With this contract award, AR Racking strengthens its position as a racking supplier in the intralogistics sector and demonstrates an ability to turn complex challenges into points of reference for operational efficiency.

PODCAST: Turning Challenges into Opportunities in Logistics Automation

In this episode of Logistics Business Conversations, host Peter McLeod sits down with Alex Christopher, Automation Sales Manager for Mecalux UK, to explore the evolving landscape of warehouse automation. Recorded live at the IMHX logistics studio, the discussion delves into the major challenges facing logistics operators today — from workforce reliability and retention to health and safety and order accuracy — and how automation is helping businesses overcome them. According to Christopher, many companies are now “dipping their toe” into automation, exploring what’s possible to address these recurring issues and improve operational efficiency.

A key driver of automation, he explains, is the ongoing difficulty in recruiting and retaining warehouse staff. Automated systems don’t take sick days or make human errors, and they deliver consistent performance. However, he acknowledges that misconceptions persist, particularly around cost and flexibility. While automation does involve a significant upfront investment, Christopher advocates a phased approach — automating critical areas first to realise benefits and reinvest returns into further upgrades.

The conversation highlights Mecalux consultative approach, which begins with on-site visits to understand a customer’s pain points, space usage, and workflow. He emphasises that frozen or temperature-controlled environments can especially benefit from automation, as denser storage reduces energy costs and emissions. Automation typically starts with repetitive, predictable tasks — the “low-hanging fruit” — before tackling more complex operations.

Christopher also discusses how automation has become a competitive advantage, with many businesses proudly showcasing their systems as symbols of innovation. He cites Bathroom Mountain in Stoke-on-Trent as a flagship project that integrates multiple automated systems — cranes, conveyors, and advanced warehouse management software — to handle a wide variety of products efficiently.

Artificial intelligence, Christopher adds, is becoming central to warehouse technology, improving decision-making, predictive maintenance, and robotic vision. Looking ahead, he envisions modular, scalable, and fault-tolerant systems defining the warehouse of the future. The episode closes with advice for companies starting their automation journey: invite experts to assess your operation, approach the process with an open mind, and focus on long-term efficiency gains that transform the way you work.

Retailers gain from Returnable transit packaging

Retail brands are increasingly recognising the power of returnable transit packaging (RTP) to improve their sustainability credentials and slash logistics costs.

With rising labour, fuel and single-use packaging costs, today’s retailers seek solutions that deliver lower transport and handling costs. In response, Loadhog has developed Dolly Max, a next-generation rolling container system. A modular solution with versatility, Dolly Max enables retailers to adapt to the fluctuating needs of their supply chains.

The Dolly Max transport dolly is compatible with a whole host of container configurations for segregated or loose bulk goods, as well as traditional cardboard boxes. This makes it the ideal substitute for roll cages, shrink-wrapped pallets and pallet shippers – all of which have disadvantages. Roll cages can prove heavy to manoeuvre, often have inefficient brakes and can feature sharp metal touchpoints. Shrink-wrapped pallets, meanwhile, are not environmentally friendly and, along with pallet shippers, require separate handling equipment that takes up valuable shop-floor space.

By combining the Dolly Max with Loadhog containers – whether attached-lid, bail-arm or collapsible – and Loadhog’s award-winning Pallet Lid, retailers achieve a secure end-to-end handling system that is almost infinitely configurable. An eco-friendly alternative to stretch wrap, the reusable Pallet Lid features retractable straps and an integrated tensioning mechanism to secure the load. In this way, the Dolly Max provides the ultimate RTP solution, completely eliminating the need for single-use packaging.

The Dolly Max system is also ideal for handling ‘uglies’, with items such as cushions and footballs capable of being transported – and even presented to consumers – within a foldable sleeve unit. The ergonomic, one-touch sleeve lock has a large access point for safety shoes, and enables rapid system construction. Various sleeve sizes can be topped with Loadhog’s Stacking Tray, creating a secure platform for adding containers to form a mixed load.

Savings for Harvey Nichols

Capable of being wheeled directly onto the shop floor, dollies significantly reduce the need for additional handling, thereby easing labour issues. For example, by using Loadhog’s Pally 86 dolly, luxury department store Harvey Nichols has been able to pick goods from the warehouse shelf and not touch them again until the shop floor, removing no less than four touchpoints. The solution has also eliminated a significant amount of one-trip packaging from the retailer’s operation, reducing waste to landfill.

Features of the Dolly Max include an innovative, one-touch brake mechanism with easy access, which is both faster and more ergonomic than the castor brake found on most roll cages. The dollies can be linked and moved together to reduce marshalling time in distribution centres. The Dolly Max has excellent ground clearance and manoeuvrability, making it easy to navigate from delivery vehicles at the roadside into retail stores. In addition, the tare weight and footprint of the system enables use on all vehicle types, including smaller sprinter vans. Labelling, tracking and branding options are also available to safeguard both the packaging assets and the goods.

Of course, the Dolly Max system ticks all the boxes when it comes to sustainability, supporting companies to reduce their carbon footprint. The solution features recycled material to avoid UK plastic tax and can, as an option, be manufactured from 100% recycled material. Dolly Max also improves transport efficiency, increasing vehicle fill by 20% compared to standard roll cages. In addition, Loadhog offers a swap-out scheme at the end of the packaging’s life, when it can be reground and remoulded into a new, reusable solution.
